What I've got for y'all today is an ensemble brought to you by the exquisite fabric known as pleather. Which I have decided can only be pronounced as "plehh-thahh" in a deep and gravely Barry White voice, preferably followed by a "baby". As in, "I wanna wrap you in plehh-thahh, baby, plehh-thahhhhh." And just who doesn't want be draped from head-to-toe in leather fauxness with Barry White at their beck and call, hmmm? Little known fact: pleather actually comes from the rare and annoying creature known as Twilight Sparkle. Hence the smell of plastic and rainbows shot from unicorn anus. So I got this idea to draw all over my clothing from one of my fave artist blogs Alisa Burke. Y'all. I totally hate it when chics say the have a "girl crush" so, well, lemme just put it this way: I totes have the lady hots for Alisa. She's like a Super Crafty Genius. Sometimes, I visit her site and I'm all "GAH! She's done it AGAIN!" and commence shaking my fists at the heavens wondering why some folks be all touched with the crafty-gene and I ended up with hammerhead toes. HAMMERHEAD TOES, Y'ALL (and, to that freaky-deaky person who keeps messaging me about wanting to see more pictures of my feet, STOP. It's not gonna happen, 'kay?). Life just ain't fair, y'all. As soon as I saw Alisa's jacket, the idea of doing the same with a Keith Haring theme popped into my head (along with "squirrel!" and "unicorn anus!" but that's pretty normal). I scoured the interwebs for super cheap plehh-thahhh (see, I told you, I can't say it any other way. Bet you won't be able to either after this post) and found that Forever21 had this circle skirt on the cheap. Not wanting to pay shipping costs, I decided to venture to the mall (anyone else abhor the mall? Gah, I feel like I'm stepping back into a 1990's time machine each time I enter one. Orange Julius, anyone?) and scooped one up. I gotta tell ya, the last time I wore a plehh-thahh skirt it was my 11th birthday, I was in 6th grade and we were bringin' the house down at Chuck-e-Cheese. I tried my hardest to find a photo from the occasion but, alas, I think I may have taken one look at it, thought, "OMG, why am I wearing maroon pinstripe pleather?!" and tossed it. Sorry, y'all! After my shopping fun at the mall, I popped over to the craft store and scooped up a coupla of Sharpie oil-based pens. I also picked up a couple of terrible fabric makers which sucked unicorn anus. Thusly, I don't recommend them. Once I got home, I did a quick search for Keith Haring/black and white and this is what popped up. I loved it so much (look at the scissor people, people!) I decided it would be the perfect inspiration. I began by sketching out my Haring-inspired designs in chalk but that proved to be too time-consuming and did a number on the tip of the Sharpie. Since Harings designs are pretty simple, I decided to just let it goooo and draw 'em with reckless abandon. Are y'all fans of Keith Haring? I feel like he was such a revolutionary artist not necessarily because of his style but because of the boundaries that his artwork removed. In the 1980's his graffiti artwork could be seen by anyone who happened by it, not just those "in the art world". He removed the mystic of the artist by working out in the open on grimy subway walls in his cartoonish hand. Not only that, but his artwork brought to light issues that were close to Haring's heart: AIDS awareness, sexuality, apartheid and war. Dude was Banksy before Banksy. Suddenly art became by the people and for the people, thanks to Keith Haring. Once I was finished with the plehh-thahh skirt, I decided a biker jacket was needed to top it all off. Barry White insisted. Gotta tell ya, I've been wanting a vintage biker jacket for ages. However they cost exactly One Million Dollars and, despite my ginormous art teacherin' paycheck, I just ain't got that kinda dough. So a plehh-thahh biker from Forever21 it 'twas (dude. Do you know how awkward it is to shop in a place called Forever21 when you are really Forever 39?). For this jacket, I really wanted to stress Harings more popular images like the people holding the heart, the barking dogs, the radiant baby and the cartoon face on the television. Other than that, I had seriously no plan at all, didn't draw in chalk or nuthin. I just went at it. And the result is pretty busy, I gotta say. However, I kinda dig that it doesn't match the skirt. I like that the skirt has more negative space so you can see the images better. By the way, do you even know how stinkin' hot head-to-toe plehh-thahh is?! And by "hot" I don't mean "hawt", I mean butt-sweat hot. You can thank me for the visual imagery in the comments. Once the temps dip a pinch, I think this will be so much fun to wear. I'm thinkin' I will get a lotta mileage outta that jacket. OMG, I just realized, I look like The Fonz! Who has two thumbs and loves plehh-thahh?! Eeehhhhhh. This guy. Oh, Fonz. You so cray. Are you a teacher-author on Teachers Pay Teachers? Did you know that the biggest mistake you can make as a TPT seller is about product covers?
In order for your AAC students to be successful communicators, they need to learn how to use their communication systems. The key to learning any language is by the modeling of others. We need to MODEL, MODEL, MODEL! As SLPs, we often only see our students for a small amount of time per week. We NEED the classroom staff, who are with them all day every day, to be good language models. Just like our students need to be taught how to use AAC, so does the staff. Fun Fact: I was a teacher's assistant in a school for students with autism and intellectual disabilities before I became an SLP! When I was a TA, I wanted to help the students as much as I could, but I didn't have the same background knowledge as SLPs and special education teachers. These scripts make it easy for staff to understand what language they can use with the students and how to model core vocabulary words. Hang them up around the classroom so that teachers and teacher aids are reminded to model language throughout the day. It may be helpful to provide your classroom staff with core language boards that they can wear. There are a few free core boards on TPT. You could also take screenshots and print pages directly from your students’ device. Classroom staff can also model directly on the students’ own AAC system. These scripts will save you from feeling like you have to repeatedly verbally remind staff to model language and will take the guess work out for those staff members that are unsure of what language to use with the students and how to model core words. *These scripts are meant to be a general guide and to provide ideas for language modeling. Every classroom is different and every student is unique. This is not really teaching related but I had to share my pop up makeover! My husband has wanted a pop up camper and has been combing sale sights for a few years now! I was not totally sold on the idea of a pop up and kept holding off until one day I finally gave in to a convincing argument. He found a great deal on a pop up and it came from a wonderful family! We drove out and picked it up. Bringing Coleman home! For the most part our new pop up (the boys named it Coleman) was in great condition...bUT I just wanted to make a few updates. My husband is in the Air Force and gone quite a bit so I did all the updates by myself while he was gone on trips. Thank you to The Pop Up Princess for so many cool pop ups to check out and inspire me. Here are some pictures of Coleman in the beginning. The first thing I did was take down all the old curtains and valances. I made sure to keep all the plastic tabs that connect the curtains (I did reuse those). Next, I took the covers off of the beds and the cushions. I recovered the cushions but kept the originals under the new covers. I threw the old covers in the washing machine and I laid the pads outside to air out. I sprayed the pads from the cushions and beds with a water/vinegar mixture and sprinkled them with baking soda once they were dry. IMPORTANT! Make sure you remember where and how certain things go on the cushions and in the camper. I took photos! NOW, I CLEANED and I CLEANED. I wiped down everything and cleaned out all the cabinets. The first update I did was to paint the stove top. I just used a white appliance epoxy and spray painted. It turned out great and was so easy to do. Now onto the fun parts the curtains and cushion covers. Here are the fabrics, rugs and colors I chose. The curtains by the beds. For the bed curtains I found a throw I liked at IKEA. I bought two and just cut them in half and hemmed the ends. For the curtain tie-backs I found napkins on sale a World Market. I cut strips and hemmed them up! TA-DA all done! Now, the regular curtains. This was the easiest job of all, I stumbled across blackout curtains at Walmart that were exactly the length and color that I wanted-I didn't have to sew a thing!!! The only difficult part with the curtains was deciding the best way to reattach the plastic tabs that hung the curtains. I tried a few items and finally ended up with safety pins. The cushion covers!! Well, these were not that easy. I have okay sewing skills, but these took a few hours and lots and lots of measuring and remeasuring. I found this post to be very helpful! I followed this tutorial to sew the boxed corners. I bought my fabric at IKEA. Here are some pictures from the cushion process. For my next project I made a cushion to go along one of the sides. I found the foam and fabric at my local Michaels Craft Store. I followed the same tutorials as I did for the chair cushions. What came next was not easy but I am so happy I did it...the floors! I headed to lowes and picked out my color and style. I chose Stainmaster Peel-and-Stick Stone Vinyl Tile it is $1.28 a piece. I used about 44 sheets in all. I soon figured out that pop up camper floors are not even. To start I just cleaned my floors really well. I did stagger mine, which was a lot more work BUT I am so happy with the way it turned out-SO HAPPY! Here are some before and after pictures of the floors. I found my rugs at World Market! I found the shelf at Target and the tubs at IKEA. The shelf lays right under my table when it is time to put the camper down. I store all of our food in the tubs while we are camping.
