Gilded Flickers, and Gila Woodpeckers, commonly make hollows in Suguaro Cacti for their nests. Other creatures and birds often use old, abandoned woodpecker hollows in the cacti for their own homes.

California quail are plump birds that really know how to rock their pear shape. Have him bring a little jubilant bounciness to your walls! All my works are hand drawn colored pencil illustrations. They are Giclee printed on 100% cotton fibre, 290 gsm acid-free, conservation grade, Italian-milled fine art paper. California quail males and females are blessed with feather topknots, but the males are more richly colored. You could say they have a little more pep in their step. You'll find them in chaparral, sagebrush, oak woodlands, and foothill forests of California and the northwest, walking around and scratching for food in groups called coveys. When startled, California quail either take off running on their little legs or explode in short bursts of flight until they reach cover. All art illustrated by Rachel Diaz-Bastin. Each fits standard sized mats and frames. All prints signed by the artist. *************** The purchase of this print does not transfer reproduction rights. © Rachel Diaz-Bastin 2009 *************** Thanks for visiting my shop!
BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE SUCCULENT PRINT - GASTERIA MACULATA Lovely fifty year old cactus print which was carefully removed from a vintage book. This is the actual 1972 book page, not a reproduction. It would look superb matted and framed and hung as part of a grouping. The page measures approximately 8 by 10 inches and is in very good condition. There is unrelated text on the reverse side. A while back I told one of my contacts here on Flickr I still had yet to capture a shot of our New Mexico State bird. Well I finally did it. And I ony had to travel to Arizona to do it. Some Roadrunner facts for you: * Roadrunners are quick enough to catch and eat rattlesnakes. *Roadrunners' extreme quickness allows it to snatch a humming bird or dragonfly from midair. * Roadrunners prefer walking or running and attain speeds up to 17 mph. hour * The Roadrunner reabsorbs water from its feces before excretion. The roadrunner is one of the few animals that preys upon rattlesnakes. Using its wings like a matador's cape, it snaps up a coiled rattlesnake by the tail, cracks it like a whip and repeatedly slams its head against the ground till dead. Best Viewed On Black

Some cacti plants are sources of water and food for not only humans but also animals. While people consume cacti for their nutritional benefits, some animals even use these plants for building their homes or nests.
