From the award-winning Linda Grant, a vibrant imagining of the tumultuous world of early twentieth-century Europe through the eyes of Mina, a young girl whose adventures begin in a deep dark forest.'Epic, magnificent, beautiful. A perfect work of art and craft and such a good story... I felt I was living it. I couldn't put it down' Philippa Perry'Magnificent... flawless writing, wonderfully flawed characters, its epic sweep combined with a warm immediacy... I'm in awe, I'm charmed, and I want to press a copy on everyone I know' Nigella Lawson'What an amazing novel... Vivid storytelling with complex and colourful characters... spectacular' David MorrisseyIt's 1913 and a young, carefree and recklessly innocent girl, Mina, goes out into the forest on the edge of the Baltic sea and meets a gang of rowdy young men with revolution on their minds. It sounds like a fairy tale but it's life. The adventure leads to flight, emigration and a new land, a new language and the pursuit of idealism or happiness - in Liverpool. But what of the stories from the old country; how do they shape and form the next generations who have heard the well-worn tales? From the flour mills of Latvia to Liverpool suburbia to post-war Soho, The Story of the Forest is about myths and memory and about how families adapt in order to survive. It is a story full of the humour and wisdom we have come to relish from this wonderful writer.

Theater review by Michael Tingley. Before me, a tire, laying on mossy turf. A couch, tilted backward, slashed underneath. A bathtub. And, most strikingly, a pond— or a puddle more exactly.
I was in Michigan over the weekend for Last Day of Unleavened Bread and the Sabbath, heard some thought-provoking messages, and had some interesting discussions. One of these messages (and related …

Two CD reissue. Hooverphonic is a Belgian band founded by Alex Callier, Raymond Geerts and Geike Arnaert in 1995. Though originally categorized as a trip hop group, they quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be described as a lone genre, but rather encompass alternative, electronica, electropop, rock, and a mixture of others. In 2008, Geike Arnaert, the lead singer of the band, announced she would leave the group. Noémie Wolfs, became the successor to Geike Arnaert. In 2018, Hooverphonic introduced Luka Cruysberghs as their new singer. To say that since then the group has earned their place in the Belgian, and international music landscape is an understatement! Hooverphonic will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021.
Fairy tales are filled with the dark forest. One of the very first fairy tales that I can recall having been read to me was that of Hansel and Gretel, whose very father takes them deep into the for…

In her debut as author-illustrator, Júlia Sardà spins an enthralling and evocative tale, rich with layers of meaning to be discovered. One night, Franca has a dream about a marvelous queen who lives in a dark cave, deep in the forest. She cannot sit still until she knows if her dream is true. So with her younger sisters, Carmela and Tomasina, Franca ventures into the forest at the end of their garden. As they travel deeper through nettles and thickets, drawing closer and closer to the cave, the world shifts, and everything shrinks and expands at the same time. Another fine work by Karl Friedrich Lessing (1808 – 1880), a German historical and landscape painter. The title of this piece is “Die Waldkapelle” (“A Chapel in the Woods”). It would be interesting to find out whether this little church still exists. On the surface, this is a typical Romanticist landscape. Note, however, the deep …
