Hello, Just popping in quickly with a card I made using the Dynamic Duos colour combo and this week's Retro Sketch... I was asked for a couple of sympathy cards last week and realised that I don't have many in my collection so made a note that I nsed to make a few more. They're not cards I think about making until I need them but then sometimes I don't have time so it's always good to have a few on hand. I thought these colours would work well with the silhouette image from Just Believe so I started with that... I stamped the image on Very Vanilla and embossed with black EP then sponged River Rock ink over the lower portion. The layers in the background are a combination of First Edition dsp, Basic Black dsp and River Rock cardstock stamped with the swirl from Everything Eleanor using River Rock ink. The ribbon is Very Vanilla seam binding that I dyed with River Rock reinker & water then dried with a heat gun. I added an antique brad to the double bow and some black brads in the top corner. The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Wishes. That's all for now... hope you're having a great week wherever you are! x Amy x
It’s Mix It Up Monday again and time for another project made with a colour combination from my latest set of In Color charts. These are the thank you cards I’ve made to go with this month’s orders. Hostess Mandy had a great party, where we all made a Christmas card using the Merry Tags Framelits. But I thought I’d look towards spring for the thank you cards and creat something with Totally Trees and a lovely soft colour combination. But I have a confession to make. It was only when I was looking at the photo on my computer, and struggled to get the colour to look ‘right’ that I realised I’ve accidentally used Pool Party cardstock instead of Soft Sky! That’s what happens when you make cards at night! But I’m keeping the recipe and colour combo as Soft Sky as that was the original intention. For most people, choosing a Garden Building is very much the easy part, and most deliberation is spent over exactly what colour finish to go for on the exterior. At Crane Garden Buildings, we pride ourselves on having a vast range of options to suit all tastes, gardens and budgets. From the Sikkens wood stain available on our sheds, to a collection of Farrow and Ball paints available on most products, we can offer the perfect palette from which to choose. Paint Ranges That We Offer Crane offer 5 different types of finish, some of which are exclusive to a particular product type. For example, our Sikkens wood stain range is only available on our Sheds and Garages, whilst our exterior paint system is available across all products except Classic Sheds and National Trust products. Classic Sheds are only available in either our Light Oak preservative stain or in the three attractive colour options of Mint, Moss or Stone. Our Farrow and Ball range is compiled of 12 specifically-selected shades available on our Garden Rooms, Summerhouses, Studios, Superior Sheds, Garages and Greenhouses. We also have a National Trust collection in a choice of 6 colours that are timeless, traditional and tastefully understated. Your Chosen Product Your colour choice will often depend a lot on the type of product you select, for example, certain products have specific colour palettes assigned to them from which you can choose. In order to make this process easier, we have created a fail-safe guide as to how to choose your exterior paint colour, just scroll down to see it! Your Style It is essential that you consider what style and mood you are going for with your chosen building as the colour and cladding choice will reflect this. For example, those who have a painted summerhouse in mind may opt for one of our Wivetons in a two-tone paint style to give off a traditional and classical look, in colour shades such as Lizard and Ivory. Someone after a contemporary and sleek Garden Studio will opt for a Salthouse Studio with smooth, shiplap cladding painted in perhaps Farrow and Ball’s Manor House Gray. Therefore, before selecting your colour choice, ask yourself exactly what style you want to obtain with the building. Is it a simple garden addition where you wish to still be able to admire the natural grain of the wood? Is it the main feature of your outdoor space that needs a striking opaque finish? Or is it something that needs to suit a defined purpose such as an agricultural or business need? Your Settings Leading on from your personal style and requirements, the setting of the garden building will also play a huge roll in deciding what shade it should be. For example, a whimsical, floral garden teeming with wildflowers and wispy shrubs would be perfectly matched with an ivory or cream colour that will stand out and complement, rather than clash, with any bright-coloured flowers and foliage. A pristine garden that has been landscaped to perfection and boasts clean-cut angles has two different options with colour choices. Be bold and go for an unusual colour that will stand out and be a striking feature, or instead continue the minimalist theme and opt for a subtle, darker shade such as Farrow and Ball’s ‘Down Pipe’. A particularly memorable example of a customer with specific settings is shown in the picture below whereby our Morston Summerhouse and a Superior Shed were painted to match the customer’s house which was also varying shades of blue and white. Some of our customers have a dedicated colour scheme to their outdoor space, and we understand that our particular selections may not offer the colour that they have in mind. this is the case, Crane are happy to provide a colour match from our exterior paint system or they can choose a different Farrow and Ball shade from the exterior eggshell range. If you’re still unsure on what finish to go for on your tailor-made garden building, you can order samples from each of our ranges or even better, pay us a visit to see a selection of our Garden Buildings with various finishes. Today I have another card to share using Burlap - for the August Mixed Media Challenge: Summer - Optional Element Burlap. For this card design - I just used threads that I pulled from a square of burlap - like beach grass - tied them together and adhered the 'sheaf' to a die cut window. I used some wonderful embossing powder I just got - Frantage Shabby Blue - on the window - it has little specks of color and metal along with the white base - that gives it a rough textured look and feel and it's really sparkly IRL! For my background panel - I first sponged it all over with Salty Ocean Distress Ink - flicked water over it and dried it with my heat tool. Then I embossed the sand castle stamping with Ranger Tan embossing powder. I stamped the sentiment from Gina K Designs directly onto the panel, layered the window onto the panel with foam dots - and adhered the burlap 'sheaf' to the frame with Glossy Accents The design of my card is a loose interpretation of this week's Freshly Made Sketches - turned on it's side. My colors were inspired by the Color Q challenge I hope you'll join us in the Mixed Media Card Challenge - you have until Aug 25th to link up your card here. Stamps: Sandcastle - Stamps of Excellence, Sentiment from Gifts from the Sea - Gina K Designs. Paper: White - PTI Ink: Versamark, Ranger Distress Salty Ocean. Accessories: threads pulled from piece of burlap, Glossy Accents, foam dots, water, heat tool, Frantage Embossing Powder Shabby Blue - Stampendous, Tan Ranger Embossing Powder, Blending tool - Ranger, Small Madison WIndow Die - Poppy Stamps.

I’m a big fan of frottage – in case you look it up I’m not referring to the slightly rude definition! No, what I am referring to is one of my favourite paint effect techniques that brings a bolder and more distinctive ageing process to any surface – in an instant! Here is an example I created on a big table currently sitting in my Oxford shop. It is simply painted with three Chalk Paint® colours: Aubusson Blue, Scandinavian Pink and Cream. You often see ‘the look’ in Swedish county house rooms, I think partly because of the old textured paints they have long used over all those wooden interiors, and partly in the way it is allowed to peel off over time. Here’s a fantastic frottaged door I recently snapped in Sweden while researching material for a new book: There’s the rub Actually the term frottage is French for ‘rubbing’. Quite simply you apply a second colour of thin, diluted paint to cover a dry base colour. Before that add-on colour is dry, you lay newspaper or plain absorbent paper over the paint and rub it down with your hands, then lift it off. Et voilá. The effect is to remove paint unevenly. I’ve been using this technique and variations of it to achieve this look for 25 years. Below is a recent step-by-step example I applied to a door I’d already painted using Chalk Paint® in Duck Egg Blue. 1. Use two colours from the Chalk Paint® range that are close in tone. For the door shown below, I used Chateau Grey over Duck Egg Blue. After the first coat of paint is dry (or if you are applying to an old painted surface), dilute your second paint colour with water so it drips a bit. 2. Use an oval brush (like my Pure Bristle Brushes) to paint a section quickly that is the size of your paper. 3. Lightly crinkle or crush your paper a bit on a flat surface first and then re-flatten it to get creases. Now again quickly press the flattened sheet of paper over the just-painted area and rub it all over with your hands. 4. Peel away the paper carefully and you will see uneven and blotchy paint, some flat bits, some textured and some stripped back to the first paint. 5. Repeat the process 2-3-4, over the rest of the surface and then, when it’s all dry, add clear wax. For an effect that utilizes an old, crumpled piece of newspaper to get that uneven,“several-layers” look, ‘frottage’ ain’t bad! Try it yourself. Yours, Annie *Top 2 photographs by Christopher Drake. This beautiful french vintage dressing table/ vanity table has been restored and fully painted with a high end furniture paint. I have used a mix of technics on this piece with a blend of different colours and a gold leaf accent finish on the details. The piece is stunning, the perfect home decor or even in a corner of a little cafe or at someone's bedroom, the possibilities are many.
