Sure, squares are interesting and easy. So, why not? If you are considering making a quilt, any one of these would be a great way to begin. How, you ask? 1. Start with a square of fabric and sew it to another square. Keep adding squares to form a row until you are satisfied that the row is long enough. Thirty inches is a good start, but you can certainly make it any length you want. 2. Make several rows. If you have a square quilt in mind (equal length and width) count the squares in the first row and make that many rows. 3. Now you're ready to begin stitching the rows together. Sew two rows together matching up the squares as you go. 4. Keep going till all the rows are in place. Really, it's that simple. One of the great reasons to use simple squares is that you can use a different fabric for each square or just a few fabrics for the entire quilt. Thanks for stopping by. Please say hello. You ever get that feeling..... Like someone is watching you? It's been that kind of week for me. These sneaky looking raccoon blocks have eyes that seem to follow your every move. And I am especially fond of that one orange little raccoon! The fabrics are all from Northcott Fabrics. The backing and the prints are from the Artisan Spirit Shimmer and Ambience collections and the solids are from their Color Works collection. For the quilting, I used my signature wavy lines and chose Omni in light gray for the top and plain white Gutermann thread on the bottom. The Raccoon pattern provides instructions for making seven different quilt sizes and two different block sizes. The full size raccoon blocks finish at 10" wide by 8" tall and the half size blocks finish at 5" wide by 4" tall. A 14" wide by 12" tall mini quilt can be made using one full size block or by using 4 half size blocks. Using the full size blocks, you can also make: Crib Quilt using 14 full size blocks finishes at 38" x 52" Lap Quilt using 28 full size blocks finishes at 54" x 62" Throw Quilt using 33 full size blocks finishes at 62" x 72" Twin Quilt using 43 full size blocks finishes at 62" x 92" Full Quilt using 60 full size blocks finishes at 86" x 92" Raccoon is a 6 page pdf quilt pattern. Raccoon is a modern minimalist design made using traditional piecing methods. No templates. No paper piecing. Only simple straight line sewing and diagonal seams. Easy to follow instructions are provided for every step of the way! Raccoon Crib quilt finishes at 38" x 52" Here is the Super Mini size made using the half size blocks. I put corner pockets for hanging, on the back of this, before applying the binding. The half size blocks were a wee bit challenging because of the tiny pieces. But turned out so darn cute! "Raccoon" Throw Size finished at approximately 62" x 72" and was the 89th use of my 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. "Raccoon" mini quilt finished at approximately 14" x 12" and was the 90th use of my 100 labels. The RACCOON pattern is now available here in my shop. "Dog Gone Cute" quilt with Paw Print borders finishes at 74" x 74" Last week I ran a workshop for the Dufferin Piecemakers near Orangeville. One of the participants, Lynda chose the Dog Gone Cute pattern to work on that day. You can see her sweet dog blocks here. She expressed an interest in having a paw print block to add to the border. So today I am sharing the Paw Print bonus border block instructions for the Dog Gone Cute quilt along. These instructions are for the Large Block quilt. My original Dog Gone Cute quilt can be seen here. If you would like to make a Dog Gone Cute quilt, this is a free quilt. The instructions can be found by clicking on the Quilt Alongs tab beneath my blog header. The original cutting instructions call for strips to be cut for the sashing and borders. If you want to add the Paw Print Border Blocks, use these instructions instead: From the Background, you will need: (2) strips at 10.5" x 74.5” (2) strips at 10.5" x 38.5” (3) strips at 2.5" x 54.5” To make the Paw Print Border Blocks as shown in the photo at the beginning of this post, also cut the amounts given in this chart. Step 1: Sew 2 of the Black B strips between the Background C and * strips. Trim the end of the strip set and then crosscut into 8 @ 1.5" wide units. Step 2: Sew the Background D strips between the 2 remaining Black B strips. Trim the end of the strip set and then crosscut into 8 @ 1.5" wide units. Step 3: Place the Background A squares on the corners of the Black E rectangles, with right sides facing together. Sew along the diagonal as shown in red. Trim the seam to 1/4" and press open. Sew the Background F rectangles on each side of the unit. Make 8. Step 4: Sew the units made in the previous steps together as shown. Make 8. Step 5: Sew a Background G rectangle on opposing sides of the paw units. Sew the units into a column as shown. Make 2. Step 6: Sew a Background 10.5” x 38.5” on the bottom of the Paw Print Border Block. Make 2. Step 7: Sew the Paw Print Borders to the sides of the quilt center. Then sew the Background 10.5” x 74.5” borders on the top and bottom to complete your quilt. I hope you enjoyed this Paw Print tutorial and if you make a Dog Gone Cute quilt, please use the #DogGoneCuteQAL hashtag when sharing on social media! Keep On Quilting On! Today I finally finished my chevron quilt top. It has to be completed in time for my best friends birthday in July, so I really need to hurry up and start quilting. I think I am going to use Moda extra wide dottie quilt backing in either aqua or red. I just hope that she likes it! I also went to a few car boot sales this weekend and picked up some new to me items. My favourite has to be this bundle of fabric scraps from the 1950s to the 1970s. My personal favourite has to be the pink fabric with the turquoise houses or the painted dancers. The whole bundle cost me £2 which I think is a bit of a bargain. I just need to decide what I want to do with them. I also picked up this large JAJ pyrex casserole dish. I have never seen this particular pattern before and I can't seem to find much information about it online, do you know what it's called? And finally, my wonderful sister bought this stunning 1970s maxi dress for my Etsy shop. It is beautifully made and the colours are amazing, I tried it on in the hope that I might be able to keep it for myself but unfortunately it doesn't fit me. It will be listed just as soon as I find my missing tape measure!
