Have you ever seen a fleur-de-lis and wondered what it represented? Read on to find out.
From the US to Belgium, the fleur-de-lis appears on everything from flags to jerseys to showcase pride for a certain heritage.
I needed a stylized Scout sign/fleur-de-lis for a logo, so I made one.
Sunday's Quilt Inspiration had to do with crazy quilts because I needed some ideas for the crazy quilt bolster I've been working on. Well, I'm still working on the bolster and need to see how lace was used on some of the Victorian quilts that I've seen. So I figured that I'd start with crazy lace. Then we'll just see what happens from there. All of these photos are on my "crazy, quilts" board. Notice the spider and spider web in the next piece? I had to find out why so many crazy quilts included them and, it turns out, there was a good reason: women of the Victorian era, both in Europe and in the States, believed that spiders were a sign of good luck. Additionally, because spiders "weave" their webs, they were good luck for weavers of cloth and those who used the cloth--needlewomen. Naturally, because many crazy quilts depicted the interests of the family, needlewomen include the spiders and their webs to represent their own work. Although I found several articles on this topic, two were especially interesting reads: http://www.caron-net.com/featurefiles/featmay.html and http://cqmagonline.com/vol09iss3/articles/1002/index.shtml. I recommend them if you're interested in learning more about crazy quilts in general. The second article is from Crazy Quilts Magazine Online, which has many articles available for free. Enjoy some more pins, these from my "vintage, joy" board. Happy Quilting, Mary

Hopefully, you have been playing along with our five-day travel #instagame last week. But if you did not. Let us take a moment to catch you up on last week's shenanigans.
It's time to get back to my blogging routine. I lost my computer charger and now that we've spent $50+ to replace it, I'm back in business. Believe me, I could kick myself for that loss, but it's time to move on. That said, I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the darling little art quilts I found just before "the big loss." This one is especially unusual. You have to really look at it to see that the hibiscus in the center actually extends out to the edges of the quilt, even past the first frame or two. How unusual and artistic is that? from Murray Johnston Art Quilts Most of these seem to be smaller quilts, but it's difficult to tell the size exactly. That's one of the problems with Pinterest. Well, that and the missing or broken links. I can't believe that I was so gun-shy when I first discovered Pinterest and now I have couple of boards with 1000+ pins! I suppose I got over my trepidation. Go by and visit my "heart, quilts" board and take a look. And if you'd like to see even more pins of fine art paintings, visit my "fine art, masterpiece" board. Happy Pinning, Mary

Before I start showing photos for today's quilt inspiration, I have a special photo to share. My mother-in-law is raising three baby goats in her living room. Three mother goats have had two kids apiece, but a few of the kids are not strong enough to stand up for nursing, so the in-laws are milking the mothers and bottle feeding the babies. As the babies get stronger, they go back to the mothers. I guess raising two sons and helping with four grandsons and 11 great grandchildren may have given her some insights on how to handle this. Either way, she's been wildly successful with these babies. Aren't they just too cute? Okay, so on to our inspiration for the day (or actually, night) which is vintage sewing because I happen to find a few great photos. Aren't these beautiful? I had no idea that Pfaff made sewing machines so early. I always thought that they were a more recent company. The center pole on this dressmaker's form can be removed so that everything collapses down into the bottom of the box. Add the top and you're ready to travel! Brilliant! Happy Quilting, Mary

I've been pressure-washing around the house. Today the concrete between the back door and studio. Yesterday the patio bricks. It's amazing how much dirt and scum has built up since the last time I did this chore. Having a wet, muggy winter does it. We struggle with mold, mildew, and spores here. It's the downside to the green. So while we have azaleas, roses and other plants in bloom, we also have oak, pecan, and grass pollen. Not my patio--it's too perfect! Anyway, I've been cleaning. As I was washing each brick one at a time, I was thinking about how much I like our old brick patio. We laid it ourselves, after reclaiming the brick from an old, broken chimney. The house had been dismantled and the land owner was happy to have us haul off the bricks. There's no knowing how old the bricks are but suffice it to say at least 50 years--25 on our patio. I chose to seat them in a herringbone pattern for no particular reason, except that (according to Richard) it was the most difficult. At the time I was in love with old patterns, especially herringbone, paisley, houndstooth, glen plaids, and toile. It made sense to choose a pattern that I liked since I'd be looking at those bricks for a while. So how about taking a look at some herringbone patterned quilts. You'll notice that they make for great scrap usage. A good place to see more herringbone quilt is on my "heart, quilts" board.
