Shop the "Cue the Coffee" mug here! Hello, and welcome back to Cue the Coffee! The fist episode of my podcast was all about my planning and organization system that I use to stay organized and on track to reach my goals, so I wanted to do a little blog post to go along with it and get a little more in-depth! For my organization system, I use three different tools; Google Cal, my Day Designer Planner, and my Powersheets! I use each one for different things and this is the system that has helped me stay the most on top of everything I've had going on. It's a shame that it took me until my last semester of college to figure this out, but oh well I guess I'll just be super organized during my post-grad life-ha! Google Calendar: Here is a quick screen grab of what a typical month in my Google Cal looks like (except December is pretty bare since I'm officially D O N E with college classes!). This is where I like to input my class schedule, work schedule, bills due, fun things...basically anything that I have going on will go in here! I put all my events in here before I put them into my planner just because its a little quicker and easier, especially if I'm out and about. For example, if I'm at the dentist's office and I need to make my next appointment I'll look here first and put the next date in here instead of having to bring my big planner to the dentist's office...ha! But anyway, Google Cal is way more convenient than I thought it would be. I can put addresses in with the events (which has been a huge game changer for me since I'm always getting lost), it will send you a notification 30 min before each event which has been super helpful, and overall it just helps me stay super organized while on the go! Day Designer Planner: This is my current 2019 Day Designer planner, I already repurchased for 2020 because this is my favorite planner I have ever used. This is great because it has one day on each individual page; one half is an hourly schedule (I have the mini so it goes from 7am to 7pm!), and a to-do list on the other half! So obviously this is where I will write my smaller day-to-day items on my to-do list, and I will write things like work, classes, appointments, etc. in the hourly schedule and make sure that matches up with the events on my Google Cal. I also like to keep my supplies I use very minimal when planning in my Day Designer. This helps me feel less overwhelmed when writing in it and takes the stress off of me to keep it looking "perfect". The pens I use are blue Bic ballpoint pens (I get these in a pack of 10 at the dollar store! Random, I know, but they're honestly my favorite!), and Zebra highlighters (I just bought this five-pack for my 2020 planner!) Here is a quick example of what a few days in my planner would look like! Again, I try and keep it really simple and easy to keep up with :) Powersheets Goal Planner: Lastly, here are my powersheets! This is what I use to set goals each month and check in with myself to make sure I am reaching those goals. I've only been using this since July, but I really have seen so much progress in myself since incorporating powersheets into my organization routine. I first picked these up because I had a lot of different things going on and I needed something to help me sort out my goals- financial, academic, career, and more. So, I stumbled upon powersheets, immediately bought the six month one and haven't looked back since! I actually ordered the 2020 powersheets at exactly 10 am on launch day just to make sure I had them- ha! For these, I like to use my Paper Mate InkJoy colored pens in the monthly goal setting pages, just to make it a little more fun. I don't have a strict color code or anything, I usually just pick "festive" colors based on the time of the year! If you are looking for something to help you reach and plan out your goals, I highly suggest powersheets! And that's about it for what I use as my little planning and organization system! Hopefully this helps someone out there looking to get more organized or who is trying to set new goals for the upcoming new year. How do you plan your goals? Angela

The A5 size is pretty big and I wanted to save some paper, so I made this A5 day per page insert instead of the day on two pages. It still has mostly everything I need to plan my day and is still more than enough room. I hope you can use these! As requested, here is the personal sized version as well. So I got this idea one night recently, that I HAD to make myself a new day planner. The one I was using was nice, but wayyyyyy too small to fit my large handwriting in, and it was driving me crazy. So, I got busy (more like obsessed - I couldn't stop til it was done), and this is what I came up with... The cover is an old Waylon Jennings album that I got at the thrift store - talk about vintage! It must have been one of his first ones. I've just been waiting for the right project to use it. The houndstooth gaffer tape on the bottom was a gift from my dear friend Julie. (thank you Julie!!!) I love it so much, and you can't get it anymore, so I have been waiting for the right project for that too... Inside the front cover I made a pocket with the bottom part of the album cover, and an intro page with an image from papayaart.com... The tabs for the months are all different... I had fun coming up with funky combinations of paper for each month's background paper. The monthly calendar was one I designed in my word processing program. I wanted big, lined, boxes for each day... In between each month I left one blank, double page spread, so I can make my planner into some kind of scrapbook to keep at the end of the year. I'm thinking I might add random world/local/musical news to these pages... The inside back cover has another pocket with part of the back cover of the album. It's got the date on it - 1967! And here's the back cover, which is the back of the album cover. I love the little paragraph where they describe who Waylon is. He must not have been very famous yet! So, that's my new planner! It starts with August 2010 and goes through the end of 2011. I'm already LOVING using it! Tomorrow I will be back with more news. Thanks so much for visiting!!!
I have tried just about every type of planner brand and size there is, from the largest to the smallest & most expensive to the least expensive. I don't discrim

Dear Diane, I cannot believe it has been so long since I posted here. You know there has been illness and a holiday, but really - how can those two events, both of which gave me time away from the day job be an excuse? We were talking about rituals to get us started in creativity and so I have applied one to blogging and am at the very table at which this blog was conceived in Cafe Boc Boc with tea and doughnut, trying to do better! There has just been a little girl at the ice cream counter whose attitude to life sums up creativity ( and female guile) well. Her father ordered her a single scoop of icecream and told her to choose her flavour. "Pink Mint" "The pink is strawberry and the mint is green. Which do you want." "Pink Mint" "The mint is green." "But I do pink." In this she was telling the truth, judging by her pink trainers and pink trousers and pink backpack. " Don't be silly. Which do you want." "Pink Mint!" The father rolled his eyes at the waitress. "Give her a scoop of strawberry." The girl put her hands on her hips. "With one of green too. I'll mix it up in the pot. Pink Mint." One thing you mentioned last time was that we should post about our creativity notebooks. Ho, ho! I think when you suggested that, it was before we both rediscovered Filofaxes. (Should I explain to readers how our Inner Eighties- Professional discovered the Philofaxy blog and asscoaited links, burst forth into the shops and how we now both own multiple new beautiful leather binders and spend time on SKYPE discussing leather flexibility, paper inserts and top tabs? Whats that? It makes us look obsessive? Ok. I won't mention that in public then.) Except to say that part of my illness recovery has been to set up my Cherry Classic A5 Filofax ( bought for a song from Amazon warehouse because the box - but not the product - was damaged) as my studio Filofax. Using it has quickly become just the starting ritual I was looking for. My eagerness and excitement about creative possibilities can at times turn into a stumbling block. Where to start? Where to focus my energies? How to absorb all the information? How to be realistic about what I can achieve in the time available? Applying the business like organised side of my personality to my creative life has turned out to be both fun (in the stationery- nerd sense of the word) and practical. Want to see where I am so far? First of all I blinged the cream dividers that came with the Filofax. As my primary source of inspiration is Africa, I stuck in some eyecandy on the front and back of each divider. I am using Ivy stickers which are just the right size for the tabs to label them, rather than the recommended permenent marker, all the better for being able to easily swap their order in the future. The extra tabs are Post It Index tabs (why do they cost so much?!). Tucked in the front pocket are some L shaped pieces for card for use as 'viewfinders' to isolate parts of a picture for design purposes. Right at the front is my activity section. I find it useful to track how much time I spend on various activities. This is both motivating, given I set a varying weekly target for studio hours and also educational as it help me better estimate how long a task takes and so to plan better for the future in terms of what I can commit to. None of the Filofax diary inserts were perfect for this so I Printed out these monthly sheets and simply use plain paper to record my activities, summing up at the end of the week and transferring total to the diary. I guess once you have worked in a law firm where time recording is king, the habit never goes away! This sheet is more detailed than usual as I am at home for a full day. My first tab is Finances. Here I manage my ( generous) monthly budget for quilting supplies and it is also useful for tax purposes to have a detailed record of how much things cost so I can calculate the profit element of a quilt. I use the preprinted Filofax expense sheets but I am not going to show you the incriminating evidence thereon!! Next the Learning tab. There are so many techniques in which I am interested but not yet proficient that I can get quite excited-dizzy with the options. So I have set out clearly my ' personal learning plans' i.e a list of goals with realistic target dates. I have top tabs for each section, currently, Photoshop Express, Working in a Series classes, Surface Design and Portrait making. each section has a yellow sheet setting out my goals, the resources, I have or need to acquire and the aimed for completion dates and how I define completion. I also list the steps I need to take to achieve each goal. Blue pages in each section contain notes. I have a tab for Calls for entries.I do save full details and entry forms electronically on Evernote, but it is very useful to have a summary here for planning purposes. However, I find it helpful to have a visual overview of the year so I can see entry dates and when quilts are to be delivered ( and therefore finished!). Filofax do make a year planner but there is very little room to write on it so I made these templates myself using Word. I have the same template with the self imposed target dates for my personal learning plan too. Behind the next tab 'Forms' I keep entry forms and labels for current shows. Need to buy a top opening envelope insert for this section. The 'Pattern' Tab is for when I write kit patterns for The African Fabric Shop or for magazines and is a space for me to jot down the steps I took making a quilt ready to be turned into coherent instructions. 'Articles' is a tab with a list if ideas for magazine articles. The 'Quilts' tab is ironically empty as this is a new set up, but will contain a sheet for each quilt with a photo, and records of size, cost and time to make it, where it has been shown etc. 'Travel' is for quilt show related travel bookings and tickets. I have an ' Inspiration tab' but that is empty at the moment. Not because I am not currently inspired but because I am using Pinterest and my Cuban Filofax together with a traditional notebook for my current themes. I may use this tab. I may ditch it. Lets see. That's the wonderful thing about a Filofax system - the flexibility. Finally, the 'Website tab' has notes on my website settings and blog topic ideas. There is nothing behind the alphabetical tabs yet but I intend to use them as catch all area for notes and clippings : G for Galleries, E for El Anatsui and so on. So, thats the business end of my system. Then comes the Brown Cuban sketchbook Filofax and its companions Chocolate Classic and the traditional notebook. But I think I will save those for another day! Now its your turn to show me yours! love, Helen

When it comes to making my own inserts, I absolutely prefer using Microsoft Excel over Microsoft Word. It doesn't freeze as much, has boxes so you can make sure everything is even, and has lots of easy ways to copy info over to other boxes. In this video I will show a very simple way to make some week on one page inserts! Hope this video was helpful, and if you do end up making your own i would love to see them! Comment below what kind of insert you plan on making and if you liked this video and want to see more!

I absolutely loved reading all your responses to my question "what do you HATE about store bought planners" It seemed we all had so many of the same issues which leads me to wonder...WHY ON EARTH HASN'T THIS ISSUE BEEN ADDRESSED! Alright then...if no one else is going to handle this...I will. I am going to take some time over the next few weeks to really get down to the root of the problem with common store bought paper planners and help you understand how a MOMager system could be helpful to you as well as hopefully helping you understand what your specific time management and agenda organizational needs are. Quit beating yourself up with the thoughts of "Why can't I just make this work!?" Sometimes you just have to realize that your not a round peg and your just not going to fit in that hole................but that's ok, some of the best people I know are as square as can be :) Source A couple years ago I was doing some research on Mom planners and I came across an article that talked about the "Pink it and Shrink it" design form that most large scale calendar and agenda companies used when making planners...they just figured "lets take our standard issue "man planner" color it pink with pretty flowers and make it cute and small....that outta satisfy female buyers!" And unfortunately...it kinda did... we took the bait. We were so excited to go in to the office supply stores and find pretty planners "JUST FOR US" lined up right next to the cold utilitarian man-planners. "LOOK!! the cover is PINK" we said! "Look at these inspirational quotes from influential women in history!" we proclaimed! "and LOOK there is a side bar for a "grocery list!" "and it even fits in my purse!!" we just couldn't contain ourselves. so we plunked down $35 on this new planner...got it home full of buyers joy and thoughts of "this is going to CHANGE.MY.LIFE....I'm FINALLY going to get it together!" then when we sat down and started to fill it in...and that's when our dreams of organizational calendar bliss went down the tube. THE BOXES AND LINES ARE TOO SMALL Shrink it? Really?? why! on average, women have larger "bubbly" hand writing so the small lines and boxes can never fit all our appointments...what should be one appointment taking up one line with "place & time" now takes up two, or your handwriting spills between the two and it all looks messy......their solution? Take away the lines! stopppppppp! why on earth would that be helpful? now our handwriting is slanty since it has no clear guide...and still the box is no bigger! THE MOMager SOLUTION The boxes in my monthly calendar that I keep inside my seasonal planner have 6 lines that are spaced to accommodate a 24pt font which is more than large enough for a bubbly hand writing. The calendar also spreads across 2 full pages so the boxes are large enough to get all your info for one appointment in on one line: "Dentist 4:00" all right there! A MOMager Tip: When thinking of Monthly Calendars think of it as the place holder. You are simply booking the time there so you don't double book, when given an item that needs to be scheduled it should always go in your monthly calendar first in a very simple form: Item, Time, Person. If there are more details needed, make note of these in your ramblings book. Then when you are stocking your folder for the week, grab your monthly calendar, and put any of this weeks happenings on your week at a glance page...this is now the space to add detail. So in Thursday's square we now write "Dentist 4:00 - cleaning w Cheryl in Rockwall" now I know exactly what is going on. BONUS TIP! I MOMage 4 people in my household; as well as my home, small business and volunteer positions. This means that I have a lot of stuff to keep track of...and the absolute best way for me is COLOR! I will go in to more detail at a later date about my really intricate highlighting system but basically I have a color for each individual in my family as well as the other items I handle. So instead of having to write out "Jason Dentist 4:00" which might be a bit squishy in that space...I simply highlight "Dentist 4:00" in light blue and I know that he is going to the dentist. VERY easy. Have you checked out The MOMager Shop? If you are wanting your very own MOMager system you can now order a completely custom planner system in either Digital OR Printed form! Go Check it out!!
