I am going to show you how to sew a hem that is perfect every time. There are a lot of sewing tutorials that just say "sew a hem"
While at a sewing class last week, I commented to the quilter next to me, that on my list of things to do was hemming jeans. She and then others jumped in, that they feared doing jeans on their sewing machines because of the thick seams. So I said I'd show them how I do it. Here is my quick way for hemming jeans. I've tried many ways, and have been using this method for the past 10 years. Beware this is a long post... Simple technique, but many pictures. First set up your sewing machine to do a straight stitch. I use a stitch length of 3.0 and a heavier needle. A jeans needle or topstitch needle if you have one. Next, measure your jeans. For my husband, I have him stand on the floor in his sock feet and I pin up the jeans 1 inch above the floor. Then lay the jeans out on the ironing board and fold up the other leg so both are even. Iron up the hemline on both legs. Give a really good pressssssss... I use steam too... See the line it makes. This is a good guide. Next, cut about 1 inch down from the pressed line. I just eyeball it. But measure if you must. Set aside the bottom of the pantleg for a recycle project. Next take small snips about half an inch long, on either side of the bulky seams. Total of 4 slits on each leg. You can see the slits are on each side of the seam, about half way to the pressed hemline. Next, tuck in the raw edge of the hem so it is folded in so that your one inch of hem is now about a half an inch. Leave the thick seam sticking up. Do not fold it under. Pin all around. Notice that I pin with the heads of the pins sticking towards me, so I can easily remove them as I sew. Next, using ORANGE thread in the top and bobbin, sew near the top of tucked in fold all around the hem. In the early days, I was matchy matchy and used light blue thread. It looked awful. Orange is the color to use. Unless, the jeans you are hemming were originally hemmed with a different color like white. I would use that as a guideline. Stitch right over the seams. Most sewing machines don't have trouble with two layers of seams. Snip off the portion of the seam that is sticking out. Voila. Your jeans are hemmed. Since it's the bobbin thread that shows on the outside hem of the jeans, I keep a bobbin of bright orange thread in my bobbin caddy at all times. I primarily use it only for jeans and I think I've been using the same bobbin for 5 years. If I had the 10 years of hemming jeans back, I think I would have found a heavier weight of orange thread and used that in my bobbin. When this bobbin runs out , I will refill with a heavier orange thread. After Note: Denise left a comment that Joanns carrys Jeans thread. You can bet this will be on my list the next time I go to Joanns. Thanks Denise.

🎶On the 5th Day of Christmas, CKC gave to me... A stuffed pillow Christmas tree. 🎶 My mother has a Christmas tree pillow in our home growing up that she made herself, and I have always wanted to have one of our own. As I was making this one, I pulled out my ric rac and was trying to think of how to incorporate it, and my mom reminded me that her tree had ric rac in the seams of the tree! I will definitely try this on my next one, because this is a new tradition for our family. This pattern comes in three sizes. Small is approximately 9", Medium is 11.5", and the Large tree is 13.5". Materials Needed: Woven Fabric (see below) Sewing Machine and basic sewing supplies Cutting mat and rotary cutter or scissors Polyfil stuffing Needle and thread for hand sewing Tree Template you can download here. Fabric Requirements are based on using three different fabric: Small Tree: 7/8 yard total Medium Tree: 1 1/8 yard total Large Tree: 1 1/4 yard total *Note: you can get two trees from the width of fabric. Seam allowance will be 3/8". Let's get started! Step 1: Fold your fabric in half and place the pattern piece on the fold. Cut out your tree and repeat 5 times for a total of 6 tree templates cut out. You can mix and match different fabrics. I used three fabrics, but mix and match more or have a solid tree for many creative options! Step 2: Place two pieces right sides together and leave about 6 inches open at the bottom. Step 3: Clip all the corners and curves so they turn out nicely. Turn the tree right side out and repeat with the other 5 trees. Step 4: Press your trees and the seam allowance at the opening in 3/8" so it will be easier to close at the end. Step 5: Place all three trees together and sew down the middle, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and the end. Step 6: Now it is time to stuff! Use a blunt ended tool like a dowel rod or chopstick to make sure the ends are stuffed. When you are finished stuffing all the parts of the tree, you will and hand sew the openings closed. I recommend using a ladder stitch. And you're done! What a fun Christmas tree in three sizes to pull out each year with your family decorations. It will be a passed down treasure for sure. I also will be buying extra fabric for next year's Christmas dresses so I have enough to make them matching trees and remember their Christmas dresses for years to come. What other great ideas so you have for your Christmas tree pillow decoration? Here are some inspirational trees from our amazing testers! We cannot wait to see what you create! As promised with you in the last post, I am presenting the easier version of the Laurel palazzo pants – the Rachel elastic waist culottes! I guess you are as excited as I was when I first making my own pair of pants. I opted for a simple design with elastic waist and a loose fit to ensure there will be no failure to discourage me in my sewing journey. The pants turned out so well that I got carried away and sewed myself and my sister a bunch of those – in various length – short, midi and long. They are so easy to make and can be mixed easily with most types of top garments – camisole for a cozy day at home, T shirt for a walk outside, or a button down shirt when you go to work. One thing I love more about these culottes is that it flatters most body types – whether you are skinny or chubby, you can always find yourself a good pair of culottes! Now let’s dig in to the Rachel elastic waist culottes! These super cute culottes feature a below the knee length, elastic waist and inseam pockets. It is a fool proof beginner project – which means you are guaranteed to succeed even with very little sewing skill! And what’s more, the Rachel elastic waist culottes are created in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL, so just look for one that fits you best! The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size you need! If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the instruction here. You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink and waste of paper, save the earth! Some PC may print smaller than actual size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to size, if not, scale up a bit. HOW TO SEW THE RACHEL ELASTIC WAIST CULOTTES You will need: Fabric of your choiceSome interfacingElastic (the length of elastic is your waist measurement minus 4 inches/10 centimetersScissors, pencil or fabric marker, ruler, pinsSewing machine or needle and thread How much fabric do you need for these culottes? You may need to check how much fabric you need before buying. It will depend on the selected pattern size, the width, and design of the fabric you plan to use. Just to be sure, print all the paper patterns and lay them out at the width of fabric you plan to use (usually from 90 to 150 centimeters or 35 to 60 inches). Measure how much fabric you will need. Don’t forget to account for pieces that need to be cut multiple times and pieces that are cut on the fold. Cutting instruction: After printing out and taping all the pattern pages together, you will get something similar to this image: Fabric will be cut into following pieces: Front: 2Back: 2Inseam pocket: 4Waistband: 1 main fabric + 1 interfacing Make sure to mark all notches and other design features such as pleats etc. from the pattern piece onto your fabric. When sewing the garment, pay attention to notches, they must match up. Sewing instruction: 1. Apply fusible interfacing onto the waistband. 2. Pin one front piece and one back piece right sides together. Sew inner leg seam. Repeat for the other side. 3. Place one pant leg into the other pant leg, right sides together. Sew the center crotch. 4. Sew pocket bags to side edges of front and back correspondingly. Pin Front Pants onto Back Pants and sew from waist to pocket opening, then continue around pocket bag, then continue down to hem. 5. Fold the waistband along the center line, right side together, then sew two ends leaving a small hole to insert elastic. 6. Pin the waist band and the main pants so the notches at the waistband match the seams at the main pants. Sew the waistband and the main pants together. 7. Insert elastic through the hole on the waistband. Close it by hand sewing using ladder stitch. 8. Serge hem, turn under, press and topstitch or slip stitch as desired. Voila! Now you have it – the Rachel elastic waist culottes! I’m so sure you will be happy wearing it – at home or outside!
