Since this is the final year to send birthday cupcakes to school with my final child, I wanted to do a little something more. Every year I bake cupcakes and send them with the kiddos to school. The last two years I haven't done it for Caleb since he is in jr. high but I have still been doing it for Jansen. Jansen heads off to jr. high himself next year so this was it! His party theme this year was Minecraft and I was almost just going to make some Creeper picks and jab them in some cupcakes, but then I thought...no. Try to make that sword Jansen has been talking about. It was pretty easy, but it just took me 4 hours to make because I only had one square cupcake pan. And, I wish I would have made the middle diamonds a lighter blue. I got a light blue dye but it definitely got darker as it sat out a bit. Oh well. I think it is pretty awesome! He will be sharing these with two classes...his homeroom class and his language class. Hopefully the kids will enjoy them. Sunrise, sunset. Close this chapter of mine and his life.
My son turned 7 so of course wanted a Minecraft party because doesn't every little boy?? :) I included some of the graphics I created for the party - feel free to print and use for yours. I created the invite and uploaded it to pinng.com to send as an evite. I got a lot of help with the cake from watching this video. I used this cake recipe for the grass blocks and it worked beautifully. The "sand blocks" are just basic rice krispies, water is blue jello and the icing is this. mini coloring book (see printables below to make your own) ********FREE PRINTABLES******** Just click image for full size and print The Minecraft coloring book labels need to be cut out, folded in half and stapled to the top of the coloring pages. I found all the Minecraft coloring images here but shrunk them all down to make the mini books. They were a big hit! I put these food labels in plastic 4x6 frames from Walmart.
It’s no secret that there are some little (& big) Star Wars fans in our house. And, with our two oldest Padawan turning 5 & 8 (with birthdays just 1 day apart), we decided they were finally ready for an “out of this galaxy” Star Wars birthday party! They were SO excited to share the […]
My kids don't have friend parties every year, so I feel like the years they get to have friends over, I need to make it memorable. This year I didn't have a lot of time to devote to planning, but I was able to find some fun graphics for free online that made everything come together really well. I got the amazing minecraft graphics from the blog catchmyparty.com They had invitations, food cards, banners (which I didn't use- keeping it simple), and all the other printables that you might need for a great minecraft party. I found this picture on pinterest and decided to try to recreate it. I baked a chocolate fudge cake mix in a 9x13 pan with a piece of parchment paper cut to size in the bottom. I also sprayed the sides and the paper with cooking spray. While the cake was baking, I made the blue jello or "water" for the minecraft cake. Instead of following the regular jello directions, you want to make the jello thick so you can maneuver it into place. To make minecraft water jello, you need two LARGE boxes of blue jello. Stir them into 2 1/2 cups of boiling water. Pour into a 9x13 glass pan (it helps to spray the pan with cooking spray first) and place in the fridge. About this time the cake should be done. Set it aside to cool and get started on the rice krispie treats. I followed the recipe on the bag of mini marshmallows, except I added a couple extra TBSP's of butter, because I think it makes the treats softer, which worked out really well since I decided to fill all the empty space with rice krispy treat. When the cake is cool, run a knife around the edges and turn the pan upside down to get the cake out of the pan. The parchment paper should make it come out pretty easily. I cut a piece of a chocolate wrapper (it was thick paper)- the cake box would work well- to use as a template to cut my squares all the same size (for the most part). I marked my lines and cut about 1/3 of the cake off in a stair step pattern. Part of it I put on top of the other piece and some of it I used underneath the second layer (since my cake was much higher in the middle than the edges- cutting it would have been an option to make it flat, but the sides of my cake weren't very thick. Another possibility is to bake two cakes, cut them both so they're flat and then stack them together- but again, I was trying to keep things simple, so some pieces of cake got used as fillers to level things out. I also cut one piece in half to give myself a couple of short cake levels. I frosted the tops of some pieces with green buttercream, and used my spreader to rough up the top like grass sort of. I used chocolate buttercream to hide the wedging-layer-job on the sides, and also on some of the top pieces to hold the raw cane sugar on- I don't play minecraft, but I think that is supposed to represent dirt or something? I cut the rice krispie treats and created a pool and filled in around the edges of the cake. The jello worked really well. I was worried about getting it from one pan to another, but I dipped the jello pan in warm water briefly, cut a couple of squares and used a spatula to scoop them out. Once I got an edge up, I actually just used my hands to put them in place. They're really solid. I think they were in the fridge for four hours or so. I filled in any cracks with slivers of jello. I found paper templates online for making your own minecraft creatures here. The first few kids who arrived saw the cake and were all pretty excited by it. I was surprised that they all wanted jello and rice krispy treats along with the cake and ice cream. My son made his name out of perler beads. I had intended to make a little black and white minecraft sign too, but I ran out of time. Google perler bead minecraft for some fun ideas though. My son also decided the cake needed a tree, so he made one out of legos. "I just threw it together mom!" The printables link has fun drink labels. And food labels- it was interesting trying to find treats that fit each minecraft label. "coal" for example, was mini oreos. 10 year olds are pretty good at coming up with their own entertainment. We watched a movie, had an impromptu dance party, played "mine and go seek" (I have no idea what that was), ate cake, ate treats, watched funny you tube clips and generally ran around being crazy 10-year-olds. A great time was had by all, I think.

OMG. I'm sooo tired. Exhausted. But at least, it's over! All the big rush is OVER! It was my man's birthday the last week of august, the back-to-school for my big girl (she just started kindergarten), her birthday (a family supper last weekend, her real birthday on friday and the kids birthday party yesterday) and on top of that, she had a big allergic reaction on thursday at school, she got bite by a mosquito on her cheek and it got so puffy and swollen, the school got scared and called me. I had to go to the doctor rush rush that evening to get a prescription for EPIPEN and for Benadryl so they can have the authority to do the administration of the medecine in case it happens again. But now she's ok :) It was a crazy 2 weeks to be honest. It was really hard to deal with all the new routine, on top of all the birthdays. Now it's OVER and I can BREATHE! I was really proud of all the stuff I did for my daughter's 5th birthday party! It took a lot of time, but I was really happy with the result! Same with my daughters! A lot of DIY (thanks Pinterest) but wow it was worth it! And a big big thank you to my friend Genevieve who helped me a lot to do the decorations :) Here's a few pictures ! CREEPER TOSS This one is my favorite DIY project! I saw it on Pinterest, I found it was really cool! I also created those little pockets with red and white felt, rice, glue gun and a black Sharpie. The green panel I bought it at Michael's for like 8$ CDN, it was already folded like that. BALLOONS : I did also a lot of balloons ... I used colored balloons, differents ducktape colors (bought at Michael's, pretty expensive to be honest, it was like 7 or 8$ per roll... I had to buy 3! I also bought some crepe streamers for the arms for about 1-2$ per roll (used that also for other stuffs!) Here's Reuben the pig and an Enderman : Here's a CREEPER GASP My favorite one, a Mooshroom ! The Spider (and a little black cardboard with ducktape for the eyes, just for a little Enderman face) GIFT BAGS For the gift bags, I bought/made : - See through gift bags at Walmart (2$ for the pack), - 7 boxes Minecraft Blind Box Serie 3 at Toys r Us for about 4$ each, - 7 Hershey's chocolate bar at the dollar store and I printed some Chocolate Bar Wrapper here. Just had to glue them on the chocolate bar! The kids were so excited to eat Minecraft Chocolate Bar ;) - Minecraft Bookmarks that I printed here. I bought some crafting stuff to do the strings for 2$ at Walmart. - "Thank You For Coming" paper that I got here So it came up max 5-6$ per bag, thats pretty good I find. Previous birthdays I was going to the dollar store, but it always end up costing at least 10$ per bag in order to have something decent. The kids seems really happy ! The food table I had so much fun doing this! I had a hard time finding some nice FREE printable food labels.. They were either expensive, of just not really nice... I could have done them myself, but I didn't had the time to do it this time. I found some really nice one on another Blog (Fiveinsix). She made them herself and shared them on her blog, so thank you very much! I made 2-3 myself for the one that was missing.. The only thing I didn't do, it's the cupcakes and the cake. I have zero talent so thank you very much to Christine-et-gourmantines.com for those nice goodies :) I bought all the things at Bulk Barn and the grocery store. The diamond sword were really popular! For the grass, my mom made some brownies with chocolate frosting with food coloring. NETHER PORTAL I think this one was the more popular with the kids. It was super easy and cheap to do! I got the idea from Pinterest, I just bought 2 different purple crepe streamers and a black one, and I used construction paper for the NETHER banner. Happy Birthday Banner I also found a nice free printable banner here. I printed the letters, cut them and glue them on a thin cardboard (the paper where rolling up, so I had to find something more strong) and I used some green rope and a glue gun to fix the banner. Pretty simple! OTHER DECORATIONS I also put other regular decorations, I used a lot of crepe streamers in the Minecraft color theme. * Sorry for the bad lighting for the one on the window! ;) * And now, for the games! I had a lot of fun to do that too! Minecraft Mask I bought a big black cardboard (same one as the Creeper Toss!) and cut both side in 3 (it was making perfect squares) for a total of 6. I also bought a pack of wood sticks at Walmart (I used the glue gun to fix the stick on the back of the cardboard) *I used the middle of the cardboard to avoid any waste, to do the Enderman, the face next to the spider before* I just used a knife to do 2 holes for the eyes. I also cut a lot of little squares construction papers of differents colors and put them in differents bowls. I cut them the size for a perfect fit 8x8 like the template. I bought 6 small glue stick and a pack of wood sticks at Walmart. I made a table just for that, and it was a big hit! I printed the templates for the faces (I can't find the website, I'm sorry! But it can easily be found on google images for all the faces you want!) And for the last game... The Little Piggy! It was also a big hit !! Easy to make (just research pictures on Google Image, or just look at mine hehe!) and really fun! I used felt and glue! Super fun for the kids!
