Last weekend we hosted our first party in our new house, a Batman-themed 4th Birthday Party. We had some family and Ollie invited some of his new friends for a lovely afternoon celebration. As per usual, I went a little overboard, but tried my best to keep to a budget, so I did a lot of fun DIYs to

Make sure you check out our Octonauts Favor Ideas, Octonauts Food Signs Free Printable, Octonauts Birthday Party Decoration Ideas, Sea Anemone Pipe Cleaner Craft and Paper Plate Fish Aquarium Craft! When I was planning Lincoln's Octonauts birthday party, I ran into some challenges when it came to Octonauts birthday party food ideas. Lincoln is on a special diet due to some recently discovered food sensitivities, so he can't have dairy, gluten, wheat, oats, or eggs. Making a birthday party food plan with those specifications felt impossible, but really, it turned out just fine. Lincoln loved just about everything, and if our guests thought the cake tasted weird, they didn't say anything. For the party table, I just did a blue tablecloth, representative of the ocean. We attached small sparkly fish and sea creatures (cut with my Silhouette Portrait) to balloon strings and let those dangle above and behind the table. It gave a good impression of an underwater world. We found pictures of the characters online to use for the food signs. You can find my free printable of these signs here. Our menu included: -Peso's Sticky Starfish (similar to Rice Krispies treats, but made with vegan rice cereal, shortening, and gluten-free marshmallows, cut into star shapes). -Shellington's Jumping Jellyfish Jello -Gup of Fruit (cut from a canteloupe to resemble the Gup A) -Seaweed Chips (homemade kale chips) -Tweak's Buncha Muncha Crunchy Carrots -Professor Inkling's Humuhumunukunukuapua'a Hummus -Sea Cucumbers -Tunip's Fish Biscuits (cupcakes made with this vegan recipe) -Barnacle Kabobs (grape skewers) -Kwazii's Shark Teeth (vegan "cheese") -Coral Chunks (dried pineapple) -Jellyfish Juice (orange juice) -Fresh, salt-free ocean water (bottles) We also served sweet tea, but it was added at the last minute and didn't get a clever tag. Ha! It really turned out cute - and everything was healthy! Definitely a win. The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a Hummus included a bell pepper cut to resemble an octopus. Andrew drew on eyes and a monocle with a Sharpie. I wish bell peppers came in pink! The Fruit Gup A was probably the cutest thing on the table. I meant to put some characters in it and forgot, but I thought that would have been a nice touch. (tutorial on how I made it coming soon) My kids were probably responsible for clearing out the strawberries, watermelon, canteloupe, and blueberries used in this fruit assortment all on their own. The Buncha Muncha Crunchy Carrots were definitely the easiest thing to make. The Sticky Starfish did not retain their sticky awesomeness very well. Within about an hour, they were pretty crunchy and hard to eat. I may need to create a better recipe. The kids loved the jello, too. It wasn't Jello brand - I found it in the health food section at my grocery store. It's not free of sugar, but it does not have artificial color. I'm surprised how much we loved these cupcakes (link above). They're vegan. It's the best no-egg baked goods recipe I've discovered yet. For the frosting, we made easy coconut whipped cream. Sea Cucumbers were really easy, too - just slice 'em up! Seaweed chips were made using a kale chips recipe we found on Google or Pinterest. I honestly don't remember which one, but most of them are pretty similar. They turned out great. They were actually one of my favorite things on the table. There was actually some real cheese offered in the Shark Teeth option, but my kids just ate the vegan option. I didn't think I should force our guests to put aside all normal things in one shot. I didn't have a way to prop up the Fresh Salt-Free Ocean sign, so I used a little bowl of beans. But then I think everyone thought they were supposed to eat the beans. So it was a bit confusing. I had every intention of cutting up some Larabars (my kids' favorite snack lately) to be "Kelp Cakes," but ran out of time. Addie, ever the food thief, was happy to sneak in a rice chip before the party officially started. Lincoln was perfectly thrilled with his birthday cupcake, the food assortment, and all the other party activities! And that, friends, is why I plan parties - the sheer joy on my kid's face. I hope you enjoyed these Octonauts birthday party food ideas! Let me know in a comment below if you use them for your own party!

DIY Dinosaur party games to make your child's dinosaur party extra fun.
Are you following us on Pinterest? For my son's 2nd birthday we decided to go with a Dinosaur theme. It was a simple choice as not only did he show a great fondness for dinosaurs, but it is such a fun and easy theme to work with. I just had to have a go! :) As dinosaurs are so popular with children, there is no end to the supplies and merchandise that you can find available to stock up for your dinosaur party. Bonus! Try $2 shops to stock up on cheap plastic dinosaur toys and other such items. One of the things I loved the most about putting on this Dinosaur Party was decorating the house with as many potted ferns and plants as I could get my hands on. We used a lot from around our own yard and borrowed some from family members for the party. It was a really quick and easy way to transform our house into a bit of a jungle! The Dinosaur Dig activity was also a highlight. It kept the kids busy for a lot longer than anticipated and was incredibly easy to set up. We had the cutest loot bag goodies ever, thanks to our friends at Micador, and I found that dinosaur themed food was really easy to come up with and a lot of fun! All in all, it was a fabulous theme and we were delighted with how it all came together. Here are some pics from our day. Food Savoury Food Herbivore Cups AKA Hummus dip in mini plastic shot-glass with vegetable sticks T-Rex Rolls AKA sausage rolls Pterodactyl wings AKA marinated chicken wings Sweet Food Tree branches AKA chocolate dipped grissini bread sticks. I saw this awesome idea for chocolate grissini wands and thought with a few alterations they'd make excellent tree branches. So easy to make, they look cool and they are actually really yum too! The dinosaur jellies were made in a cake mould and were probably the most annoying of all the food to prepare and I had a number of failures. They looked cool though. As I couldn't make enough for everyone to have one, I did some simple layered jelly cups (like we did in our Rainbow party) with a lolly dinosaur on top. Dirt cups AKA a layer of red jelly, a layer of crushed Oreos (you needs lots if you don't want it to be covered by the chocolate custard like ours), a layer of chocolate custard, crushed choc-chip cookies sprinkled on top and a gummy worm to finish them off. Deceptively delicious. Drinks Swamp Juice AKA chocolate milk Jungle Juice AKA fruit punch with fresh cut fruit The Cake The cake was three layers in total. 2 layers of chocolate cake and one peppermint choc-chip layer in the centre. Between the layers was chocolate ganache. To decorate I roughly iced the outside with basic chocolate icing to give a rough, dirt look. I made the little dinosaur topper out of some ready-roll icing that I dyed and then moulded (sort of like you would with clay). It did require some wire in it to support the weight of the head and was definitely a time consuming part. (The dinosaur is modelled off the dinosaur that you see on the food labels. This dinosaur design came from Noah's dinosaur party invitation that I purchased from Less Ordinary designs.) I purchased some "chocolate rocks" from a sweet shop to decorate the cake with and I made the little banner using a couple of paper straws, some fishing line and some flags that I made on the computer in a Word doc. Decorating Setting the scene for this party was not difficult at all. I stuck to a jungle type feel with lots of green and brown. Live plants gave it a really nice feel and I filled in the rest with green "jungle-vine" streamers, banana leaf on the platters, Hessian material and quickly made green jungl-ish decorations. I also printed a dinosaur footprint template and then cut the prints out of black paper and then laminated them for durability. They began in the driveway and went up into the house. Welcome and come in :) My Uncle had previously made the dinosaur canvas art for Noah. Lucky us! We actually left all the plants inside our house for a good week after the party. If only my house could always have that many plants. Did you spot any of the dinosaur wall stickers? They are still everywhere in our house :) Dinosaur Party Activities I decided for this particular party, just to have some simple "activities" that were open-ended and meant the kids could entertain themselves without me having to run any specific games. I set up a Dino Dig on the balcony, some Dinosaur Colouring with dinosaur colouring sheets that I got off the net and our dino markers, a Dinosaur Small World and a Dinosaur Book corner. Dino Dig Inside the sand-pit I buried a complete skeleton (which came in lots of parts) that I had from when I taught a Dinosaur Unit in my classroom (I bought it from National Geographic). I also popped in some other small plastic dinosaurs and set out various "palaeontologist" and "dinosaur hunting" tools. Dinosaur Colouring I found these free dinosaur colouring sheets on Kidspot and printed out a bunch of different ones. To make it even more fun we set out our Dinosaur Besties markers. Dinosaur Book Corner We had a number of Dinosaur books already but that week all the books we borrowed from the library were about dinosaurs! Dinosaur World In our sand/water table I put a fresh batch of green playdough and a whole lot of dinosaur figurines and props. Let's Party Happy 2nd Birthday to our gorgeous little boy. We love you more than words can describe xox Dinosaur Treat Bags I love to give a fun treat bag to all the kids as they leave the party but usually they've eaten plenty of sweet treats at the party so I try to find things besides lollies to fill the bags with. This DIY playdough treat bag we did last year is still really popular. This year our guests got really lucky as our blog pARTner, Micador had just released some awesome Dino crayons, which I just had to have! When I enquired about them they generously provided us with a range of really cool dinosaur themed items for our party. I set up the take-home bags and items on low tables in the entrance so that children could go along it as they left and collect their goodies for their bag. I bought plain white paper craft bags and then printed out name labels on the computer. Using some jagged scissors I cut out some colour paper to decorate them with. I wasn't worried about them being perfect, the rough look fits in well with a dinosaur theme and the bags were really quick and easy to do. I can't help it that the Natural Confectionery Company make dinosaur shaped lollies. I consented and allowed them to take home some sweets in a small DIY plastic bag. haha We already had our own set of Dino Besties markers and love them so much that I really wanted my guests to take home one each. The Dino Crayons aren't just fun to draw with. You can play with them and they make really cool fossil imprints in clay and playdough! The Clouds Modelling Foam made awesome Dinosaur Eggs! I cut up some large sheets of Dinosaur Wall Decals so that the kids could take home one each. We also decorated our house with some of our own. I purchased some small sets of Dinosaur board books from various shops. (No one shop I went to had enough of them but if you look well, you can find them all over the place.) Each set came with around 4-6 mini board books in it and worked out to be around $1 per book. Thanks for Coming Thanks to all our family and friends for coming and giving our little boy such a special day. At the end of the day, your presence is much more important than your presents and much more important than themed food and decorations. Another birthday done and dusted. If you're interested, here are the previous birthday parties we've shared: Very Hungry Caterpillar Party Alphabet Party Rainbow Party Butterfly Party Happy partying, Debs :) {Disclosure: I was not paid for this post. Our guests were generously gifted with some items for their goodie bags (which we love and wanted anyway.) I was under no obligation to share where they came from but I wanted to provide people with access to them if they wanted, (because they're so cool! haha.) As always, all the opinions on this blog are my own and that of my children} Look where else we are. Are you following along? :) New Here? WOOHOO:) The kids decorated this with stickers from wal-mart They had fun. Each kiddo got a space ranger necklace. Since helium is at a shortage i taped the balloons to sticks and taped the eyes and ears on. We painted this out of two science boards taped together! I thought it turned out pretty awesome:) The party food and cake table! We covered my metal stars with foil ....Heehee! They all participated an cheered eachother on it was so cute! First we had space ranger warm ups led by the beautiful commander Hannah the kids had a blast. They each had a jet pack or wings and a finger laser that I got from amazon.com for practically nothing. We had the kids run in place saying "I will protect the galaxy" ! It was fun to watch! And of course they ran around the room shouting "to infinity and beyond" , and saluted to star command! They did karate chops saying attack zurg, and practiced using their finger lazers, Helena wanted everyone to say pew pew on this part:) Here are some pics of the space ranger camp: The very pretty Commander Hannah! I had the sun at the bottom and all the planets in order with point values on them going up the stairs, the kids had to use the "shooting stars" i made to land them in the containers. At the end they could add them all the points up that they scored! these are the shooting stars i made for the game. Each kiddo got to bting a star home for a prize, i just hot glued felt stars together with rice in the middle and of course the ribbons :) The last game was space rock relay. The kids and I crumpled up foil to make space rocks and I bought little grabber claws from Target for 5.00 . I wasn't happy with the price but my kids loved the things , so it was worth it. the kids had to pick up a rock from one container with the grabber then carry it across the room and drop it into another container and then give the grabber to the next in line. I had two groups so they got to race. The prize of course was pop rocks:) running in the space rock relay! Want to plan the best pirate party ever? Here are the most fun ideas ever for making your party simple but INCREDIBLE! Pirate party food, pirate games, and even some free printables!
Our son, Christopher, turned 3 this month. He loves anything to do with construction ... construction trucks, signs, all tools, hard hats etc. ... and so it was easy to pick a theme for his party. I found a bouncy house in the shape of a digger a few months back and it was a go! The color theme was orange, yellow and black. It was so much fun to decorate the house and I must admit I went a little crazy with the caution tape! I found so many great ideas on Pinterest and I hope by sharing my party with you I will be paying it forward. Feel free to message me in the comments if you have any questions where I found things (just be sure to leave contact info). Outside Front of the House Decor: This was the front walkway and door that greeted our guests. The ladder and tools are my husband's that I just decorated with caution tape and tied balloons to (not pictured). The front door read "Caution 3 Year Old Ahead" and is a sign I made by hand from a poster board and sharpie I purchased at Walmart. Favors: When you entered our house there was a table full of hard hats and tool belts. The hard hats I purchased from Amazon.com and the tool belt are from Home Depot (.77 cents each). I used our chalkboard and wrote "Welcome Workers! Grab your uniform and report to Site Supervisor Christopher." As kids arrived we let them pick which color of hat they preferred and then tied on their tool belt and explained what was inside. Each tool belt contained a construction party blower (found on Amazon.com) and then Work Orders (see explanation later in this post). My husband made a logo for our son's pretend construction company. We printed and cut them out as circles and taped them on the front of the hats. They read "Christopher Lehmann Destruction Inc. Crew". ;) For the favor, each child received a small truck in a bag filed with whoopers (boulders) and recces pieces (pebbles) when they left. The trucks come in a 5 pack and can be bought at Target, Walmart or Amazon.com. The favor tag was found online and can be downloaded here: Link Inside Decor: Let me tell you, decorating your house with caution tape is way too much fun! This is our front room and I simply taped up caution tape and a bunch of signs (the one on the mirror came in a four pack that I purchased from Amazon.com). I then added a cone and dump truck that we already owned to the toy dresser and we were set. Also if you want to keep your party guests out of certain areas of your home caution tape and a "Danger Keep Out" sign works great and totally fits the theme! Port-a-Potty sign on the bathroom door! Port-a-potty sign found here: Link See I told you I went a little crazy ... I even decorated the bathroom! I love this "Workers Present" sign I found online and I put it above the mantel since all the presents would go in this room. The sign can be download here: Link. I made the 3 banner using the leftover poster board from the sign on the front door and the "Party Zone" sign. The 3s were cut out of black construction paper and glued on to the poster board. One of my favorite decorations went behind our food table. I simply taped caution tape and black and orange streamers in a repeating pattern at the top of our cupboards and then let them hang to the floor. It created a dramatic look for practically nothing! Food: The food table decorations included a "Dig In" banner that my husband designed and printed on card-stock (I had found a pack of oranges/yellows at Michael's for $5). My husband also designed the food tags which labeled all the food as their constriction counterparts. My son already owned the three construction trucks and all the tools on the table and they added a fun touch! I found the adorable idea of calling the cutlery "tools" on Pinterest. I already had a paint can from my daughter's painting party and just crumbled up some napkins on the bottom of the can to give height to the forks and knives. The plate and napkin holder I just happened upon in the Target $1 bins. For the food I kept it simple. I have made the mistake in the past of trying to make a bunch of fancy food from scratch for parties and have realized (1) kids don't eat fancy food (2) I will have no life/sleep the day/night before and morning of the party (3) it really is not worth the effort. So even though I still love going all out on party decor and details, I go pretty simple when it comes to food. Drinks were lemonade and apple juice labeled as gas and diesel (another Pinterest idea). And the "Refuel Here" sign we saw on Pinterest and then my husband just redesigned it. I bought some warning tape on Amazon.com for $4 and wrapped that on the water bottles to make them more festive. The dessert table was a lot of fun but again I kept it simple (everything was bought except for the dirt cups). We had a cake, build your own dirt cup station with four different toppings, and then mini cupcakes. The "Party Zone" sign was another sign I made out of poster board I found at Walmart. The "Build Your Own Dirt Cup" my husband designed. The dessert table was decorated with caution tape and again tools we had around the house. This is a Costco cake and it works perfectly for a construction party! I just added a few small trucks that I already had bought to give away as the favor and some smashed up Oreos as dirt and I was good to go! The candles I bought at Walmart. I loved the idea of doing a build your own dirt cup station. I made the dirt cups ahead of time with chocolate pudding and crushed up Oreos. Then for toppings we had wafer cookies (2x4s), whoppers (boulders), recces pieces (pebbles) and gummy worms (worms). The kids LOVED it and had more than enough sugar during this party! Dig In Dirt Cup Topper Here: Link Cupcake Topper / Road Signs Here: Link My husband made this fun, themed sign for the outside garbage can. Games/Things for guests to do: The party was mainly in our backyard where we had a big bouncy digger, our play set/sandbox and tables set up. On each table in the middle I put a construction cone (two for $1 at the Dollar Store) with a dump truck printout that I had printed on white card stock and cut out (Link). I then ran balloons from a weight inside the cone out the top (not pictured). On each table I also placed coloring sheets (Link), crayons, and fake legos from the Target dollar bin. "Work Orders" were in each child's tool belt which they received as they arrived. The "Work Orders" listed the different locations where, now as construction workers, they had to do their "jobs". There was the Bounce Zone (the bounce house), the Wrecking Zone (the wrecking ball game), the Dig Zone (the sand box) and the Build Zone (inside the house in the front room where there were blocks and Duplo legos for the kids to build with). The older kids were really into this and checking off each box! I found the general template here (Link) and then my husband tweaked it a little bit to make it more personal. This is the Bounce Zone and as you can tell the birthday boy thought it was pretty cool! The second zone was the Wrecking Zone (another Pinterest idea)! I wrapped a bunch of boxes in brown and white packing paper and drew bricks on the brown and wood grain on the white. The kids could stack them as high as they wanted and then pull back the wrecking ball and knock them over. The wrecking ball was an old ball that we tied twine to and then covered in Duct Tape. We then attached it to the top of our swing set. It was a HUGE hit! The boxes. Our little construction worker! The third zone was the Dig Zone ... AKA the Sandbox! I just filled the sandbox with my son's construction trucks and shovels and then sprinkled some fake Legos (again Target $1 bin) so that the kids had something fun to dig up. The fourth and final zone was the Build Zone. In one room I put all our toys that kids could build with (i.e. connector blocks, wood blocks, Duplo Legos, train tracks etc.). This also became a great space for the babies and toddlers to play, away from the outside craziness. Can you tell by his face he had an amazing day?! Happy 3rd Birthday Christopher! Thank you for checking out my party blog and if you are planning a construction party for a special little one in your life I hope this post gives you a few ideas!
