Asta Nielsen is probably the greatest Danish film star of all times. However, she only starred in four Danish films. From her breathtaking appearance in “The Abyss” made in 1910, to Holger-Madsen’s moral tale “Towards the Light” from 1919. In the Danish films she made, she stars with the greatest Danish male protagonists of the period: Poul Reumert, Valdemar Psilander and Alf Blütecher, just as she was to co-star with the greatest German actors in her German productions. “The Abyss” is by many regarded as not only the important debut of Asta Nielsen, but also the film that marks the early 1910’s as the golden age of Danish cinema, relying heavily on feature length erotically charged melodramas. Having claimed instant stardom through her first films, Asta Nielsen soon discovered that Denmark could not accommodate her talent and soon moved to Germany, where most of her films were produced. She appeared in more than seventy films between the years 1910 to 1932, of which only forty are known to survive either complete or in fragments. The Danish Film Institute probably holds the most complete collection of Asta Nielsen films, comprised by prints acquired from many archival sources. We have chosen to upload two clips from our collection. One is a fragment of the infamous erotic dance sequence from “The Abyss” where Asta Nielsen performs with the villain and male protagonist Poul Reumert. The other is a small interview clip from her twilight years.

German postcard by Ross Verlag, Berlin, no. 644/3, 1919-1924. Photo: Art-Films. Asta Nielsen as Hamlet in Hamlet (Svend Gade, Heinz Schall, 1921). Asta Nielsen had produced the film herself. Danish silent film actress Asta Nielsen (1881-1972), was one of the most popular leading ladies of the 1910s and one of the first international film stars. Of her 74 films between 1910 and 1932, seventy were made in Germany where she was known simply as Die Asta. Noted for her large dark eyes, mask-like face and boyish figure, Nielsen most often portrayed strong-willed passionate women trapped by tragic consequences.
