This beautiful full-page print entitled “Faun and the Fairies” by Daniel Maclise (1806-1870) in 1834 is from the 1978 first edition book “Fairy Paintings” by Beatrice Phillpotts, published by Ash & Grant Ltd, London. Measuring 8½” x 12½” (22cm x 32cm) and blank on the reverse with borders for framing, it makes a unique gift for art and fairy lovers. It was not until the turn of the 18th century that the fairies were taken up with any real seriousness by British artists, by which time there was a vast body of fairy literature to draw upon. Once established, however, it was soon apparent that such subject matter had enormous visual appeal and, by the mid-19th century, not only had this unique phenomenon emerged as a distinct art genre, but it was also enjoying a considerable vogue. Fairy painting was a particularly British phenomenon which flourished between the 1790s and 1870s and provided a remarkable inverted reflection of contemporary trends. The insular spirit of the 19th century inspired an image of fairyland in art as an ideal world which existed somewhere at the heart of the British countryside.
