I wanted some little scary looking little plants inspired by Audry II from Little shop of Horrors. So I used both Celluclay and Paperclay. Two of my favorite things to work with. Foil and a coat hanger for the stalk frame. Toothpicks are for teeth. The cheap foam, pots, and foliage from the dollar store. I made the shape I wanted with the cut wire. I covered it in foil to bulk it up. I made it flat at the end in the shape of the tongue. I covered it in a layer of celluclay and let it dry. I made the head out of foil. I it balled up and shaped into a lower and upper jaw piece. I also tried using styro-foam eggs I cut in half on a couple. They work good. But I think I prefer the versatility the foil gives to the shape. I cover the halves in a coat of celluclay let it dry and then smooth it out with paperclay. When they dried I glued them on the stalk /tongue with hot glue I filled in the gaps at the at the base and shape it more with the paperclay. I also added gums lips and other detail with the clay. In the gum line I poked little holes where I want the teeth, with a tooth pick. This will give a good anchor when I go to glue them in After it was dry I just painted the head. Not so worried about the stem yet. I hot glued on the leaves at the base of the head. Then I used paperclay to blend them and smooth out the stalk. Of course painted it when it was dry to match . After I sealed the whole thing. I use a very High Gloss varnish several coats on the inside of the mouth, lips and tongue. to make it look nice and wet. Then super glue in the teeth. I also made one with teeth made of fimo instead of toothpick. I just rolled them out and cut them and baked them. I also used flower petals instead of leaves for the head.
The paper proteas that we have been making have been such fun to design. This ancient flower, which has been around since the days of Gondwanaland is also known as the Sugarbush or Suikerbos, because of the sweet syrup that can be harvested from some of them. Using sticker backing paper, which is unrecyclable, because of its paper and plastic layer has been a challenge, as the plastic wax side resists all glue and paint. But the paper side has been a wonderful canvas to work on. Some of the proteas have had their petals painted pink. Christy Kiggan has worked to colour the petals of others in a different and more exciting way too. She has used beetroot to make dye, and has dipped the petals in this dye, until the colour shows right through to the wax layer. In this closeup you can see the difference between both treatments [and the faint logo on the recycled paper] These are all part of the new Freshly Found Recycled Paper Flower range, which will be launched at the Design Indaba Expo at the beginning of March. And this is where it has all been happening. Here's the work table. Although it could be classified as messy, I had to take a pic . I found the colours and rhythm of the petal shapes quite pleasing.

Recently my son got interested in astronomy :) Even though he's only almost four, he enjoys watching documentary movies on astronomy, knows the names of all the planets, what a solar eclipse is and much more... That's why we came up with the idea of making a toy telescope. Here's how you can do this: You will need a lot, but really a lot (15) of toilet paper tubes, an adhesive tape, glue, scissors, nice wrapping paper, images of different planets, stars or constellations (stickers, cut-outs or drawings), and... a bit of free time. Join 5 tubes into one long tube using the adhesive tape — that will be the telescope tube. Now make the three legs of a tripod — each one out of three tubes, — by joining them with the tape. Attach the telescope to the tripod, then cut the bottom of the legs at an angle, so that they can stand steadily on a flat surface. Finally, wrap the telescope nicely in wrapping paper. Now you have to decide what you'd like to see and make interchangeable caps with different pictures. Well, let's make the caps. Make a lengthwise cut in a toilet paper tube, and then cut the tube into 4 or 5 rings. For each ring separate the edges of the lengthwise cut to create a gap of about 1 cm (3/8 inch) and secure with the adhesive tape. Now the ring should fit the front of the telescope tube. Prepare a paper circle that is approx. 2 cm (3/16 inch) wider than the ring in diameter. Glue an image onto the circle, put the ring onto it, then fold edges of the circle up and glue them to the ring. Make several interchangeable caps using the same method. You're set to play :)

When I first saw this DIY Ouija Board coffee table on Instructables, I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not. But the longer I looked, the more my Native American spirit guide, White Feather, convinced me that it was pretty rad… Purpletheory writes: I was inspired by old Ouija Board designs, which had wonderful curved typefaces and intricate illustrations. This was a fun project and cost me around $120 to complete, and requires only basic tools. There are 11 steps involved if you wanna try making this on your own. All the instructions are here. I noticed someone in the comments section followed Purpletheory’s step-by-step instructions and posted photos of the finished table. I think it turned out rather nicely. Photo by insilvermoonlight.
