The Tome is our most capacious journal, one that will hold your stories, musings, sketches, and whatever other magic comes your way, as they have for me over the last 16 years! I’ve spent a good part of my life binding Tomes and filling them. I am sure my right arm is stronger for all of the writing and stitching and hauling of pages in journals for so many years of my life. So many paths we’ve traveled together, me and my books. I wonder how many miles of words I’ve written if they were strung end to end? I won’t do the math, but there are a lot of years of making books and a lot of years of scribbling in them between now and when I made my first journal. I was always stitching a book or filling one up. Each of our Tomes has hand-stitched headbands on the top and bottom and raised chords on the spine. Inside you will find line-free Strathmore drawing paper – thick, hand-torn, acid-free pages that work wonderfully with ink, pens (smooth and scritchy-scratchy), pencils, watercolours, and a myriad of other mediums. The pages are hand-stitched with linen binder’s thread, and shaped and re-enforced with linen book binding chord and tarlatan. Our Tomes are meant to be carried daily and can take a beating. They are strong creatures, ready to accompany all aspiring treasure hunters, adventure seekers, documenters, and storytellers.

At my school, we watch a live broadcast for the morning announcements. My favorite part is what we call the "Friday Song". The whole school joins in singing and waving their hands to celebrate the end of a great week! You may want to adopt this in your classroom. There is no particular tune so you can make up your own. This is how it goes: Its...Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday, Friday, Friday! It's Friday, it's Friday! It's Friday all day long! Woo! It's...Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday, Friday, Friday! It's Friday, it's Friday! The week is almost done! Woo! I have no idea who made this up, but it's just our silly way to get pumped up for the weekend! Freebie Fridays at TBA is really something to celebrate! I have found so many fantastic downloads by searching through previous Friday posts. Someday, when you have a little free time, you might want to do the same. There are seriously hundreds or even thousands of freebies to browse! It's a great way to find new blogs you may want to follow too! I'm linking up again to share some Daily 5 poster sets. I have gotten many requests to make a set that matches the black and bright CAFE poster set. Both are freebies at my TPT store and Teachers Notebook shop. This one has been downloaded over 4000 times! It's CRAZY to imagine that many classrooms may have this on their bulletin board! :) If you're implementing Daily 5 in your room and love bright colors, this is the poster set for you! :) Enjoy it friends! I love receiving feedback on freebies! It just makes you feel good to know that you have helped someone out and that they appreciate it. Here is what one sweet teacher (Kelly) said: I LOVE this poster set. I was looking for a CAFE set that is thorough, kid friendly, and bright and cheery, and you completely nailed it! Thanks for making it a freebie!! Remember to get your posts ready for the linky on Wednesday! I would LOVE to have you join me for What Worked? What Didn't? You can save this image for your post! :) My post will be related to managing Daily 5 rotations! See what other great freebie finds are out there! Click on the picture to visit TBA! Have a super weekend! Woo!

Take a look at how I set up my class and organize my stations for a successful start to Daily 5 in kindergarten.
At the start of a new year, chances are some of your students are new to your school. Other students were not in the same class last year and everyone is new to your classroom. Let your students know that great things happen when they all cooperate and work together. During the first week of school, you should spend some time on team building activities. Here are a few ideas I found around the web: Adapted from this activity: http://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Helium_Stick -Floating Hula Hoop, This activity sounds simple, but it’s great for communicating and working together. Divide the class into groups of 4 or 5. Have the group form a circle facing the center. Ask then to hold out their index finger. Place a hula hoop on their fingers. Their job is to lower the hula hoop to the ground without dropping it. They have a tendency to go up instead of down. It will take some communication to get the hoop to the ground. http://www.ultimatecampresource.com/site/camp-activity/hula-hoop-pass.html -Hula Hoop Pass, The object of this activity is to pass a hula hoop all the way around the circle. You can have kids stand in one large circle or divide the class into two circles. Students face the center and hold hands. Choose two people to open their hands and place the hula hoop there to start the activity. The kids have to move the hoop over their bodies and pass it on to the next person. Others can give encouragement and suggestions if the hula hoop gets stuck. Inspired from this video---https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILlp1i2WJcM -Balloon Caterpillar Race, Have students form 4 lines with 5 to 6 students in each line. Students should all be facing forward with the lead students behind a start line. Place an inflated balloon between each person. When you say go, the entire line must cross the finish line without dropping any balloons. If they drop a balloon they need to go back to the start and begin again. Another way to begin building a community is to brainstorm what it takes to be a positive classmate. Use a chart like this to brainstorm the characteristics of a positive team member. You can download a copy of the blank chart here. Since it is a pdf file you can print it poster size. I made mine 200% of the original. Then I glued the six pages together to make the poster for our class discussion. I also make a single page copy for every student so they can make their own chart along with you. Once the students understand what makes a positive classmate tell them the class will earn a reward for showing all these characteristics. Using the letters SPARKLE, which stands for Students who are Prepared, Attentive, Respectful, Responsible and Keep Learning every day! Put up one letter every time the whole class is following the guidelines for being a positive classmate. When they earn all 7 letters the class has earned a special reward. You can choose the reward or let the class brainstorm a possible list. You can download the letters here. For more ways to help your kids SPARKLE, check out the entire product in my TPT store.

This will be my first year implementing Daily 5 in my classroom. Last year as a Curriculum Coach and Resource Teacher, I was exposed to it...
Yesterday, I shared a great video resource for kids and teachers about choosing good fit books. Although, I have used the analogy of finding good fit books using shoes, I seem to always come back to The Goldilocks Rule. I learned about this for the first time when I started at my current school. Here is how I set it up in my classroom. First, I read Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Many of my students are familiar with the story. Afterwards, we talk about Goldilocks choosing items that were "just right" for her. I use that analogy to help students understand what it means to read and select Just Right books. We compare how Papa Bear's items were "too big" for him, just like sometimes we may read books that are "too hard" for us. We discuss what it means as a reader when the book is too hard. Then, we talk about what it means as a reader when a book is "too easy." Like it was too easy for Goldilocks to enter into the Bears' home. Finally, we discuss the purpose of reading. Why reading and comprehending matter. I do not do all this in one sitting. Depending on the grade level, students, and time of year, this could be an entire week's worth of lessons. I had created a wonderful poster to use but I have been without it all year since our Librarian has it in our library to help students there. How do you help students select "just right" books? Happy Teaching and Learning!
Happy Tuesday! I know you're probably heading to bed early the next two nights to prepare for what is usually the longest school day ...
Every day for a year, artist Windy Chien learned to tie a new kind of knot and then shared the results on Instagram—revolutionizing knot art and reinventing her life and career in the process. In The Year of Knots, Chien describes how her knot-making project led her on a path of discovery. The book combines projects, tutorials, and transformative personal stories, all aimed at inspiring readers to make knotting—and creativity in general—part of a meditative daily practice. The knots in the book are gorgeously documented step-by-step for the many knot- and macramé-obsessed readers out there wanting to try it themselves. Knotted projects abound: a necklace, a dog leash, along with wall hangings and a hanging light. At the heart of the story is the simple, empowering idea that a single year is all the time you need to make a life-changing creative leap. All book sales are final.
