Webelos Adventure: Webelos Walkabout Do all of these: Create a hike plan Planning a hike for a pack Another hike planning article Best short article of what I'd expect out of a Webelos Hike plan Word Doc Worksheet for Planning a Hike (You need a map too) Print out maps for the boys with compass, distances (even if only in blocks) and landmarks. Give each boy a turn with the map and the compass, teach them to orient the north on the map to match the north on the compass first thing, before they try to read it any further. Each boy gets a turn to be the "trail leader" we are doing an urban-ish hike, so they will use compass and street names to navigate. Assemble a hiking first-aid kit Boys life guide to a first aid kit Personally I like a mini first aid kit made in a ziplock sandwich or snack bag, to go in a pocket for this.. An adult hiking first aid kit Don't give the kids the Benadryl, ibus or immodium yet. Add moleskin and you are great. "Real hikers" just use tape, but moleskin is better for scouts who will not catch blisters as early. You might add 1 dose of any daily meds you kids might forget that are truly needed. I bought these cool mylar bags for first aid kits and I'll be using them for lots of other webelos project. (But ziplock bags will work fine). To differentiate them from other projects I bought these red cross stickers. Do at same time as first aid kit for First Responder for a Twofer Describe and identify from photos any poisonous plants and dangerous animals or insects you might encounter on your hike. Venomous snakes of Texas Top 10 Dangerous Animals of Texas Biting Insects of Texas cities, goes into way to much detail needs to be boiled down for the boys. Before your hike, plan and prepare a nutritious lunch. Enjoy it on your hike, and clean up afterward. Recite the Outdoor Code and the Leave No Trace Principles for Kids from memory. Talk about how you can demonstrate them on your Webelos adventures. Leave no trace in more detail With your Webelos den or with a family member, hike 3 miles (in the country if possible). If you can plan hike near where you live, so the service project will be easier. Use google maps to plot out the distance, Or even better I used this (wander map) to plan out my hike, use the google hybrid map. Each boy gets a turn using the map to orient themselves and pick the next direction we go. Each boy gets his own copy of the map and compass to follow along. Remember, first orient the map to north, second find your self on the map... then try to find yoru way. Teach each boy to watch the sun, or other land marks at every change of direction to figure out which "compass direction" he is moving towards now, and what landmark marks the turn. (we are going north west on main street at the corner of main and 1st. we are taking the right fork of the trail north., etc) (This is huge) Have each boy after he has gone a few steps down the path, stop, and turn around, and look at the landmark (street sign, fork in the road, etc) from the _other_ side, so that if he has to back track later he will recognize it. (This is huge) Complete a service project on or near the hike location. Age appropriate Service Projects. We are going to hike past the school and plant trees at the elementary school, my 18yr old planted trees there with his wolf den and I get a happy feeling every time I drive past them :) Perform one of the following leadership roles during your hike: trail leader, first-aid leader, lunch leader, or service project leader. IMHO, Rotate positions hike leader first aid leader, and tail end Charlie (last scout in line) at ever crossing or intersection, so every boy does each position.. Here are some signs I made to use in Cub Scouts. Feel free to use them if you'd like. PDF of Cub Scout Info Sign Since I am a teacher by nature, I always try to think of little tricks to remember things. When I participated in Board of Review nights with Boy Scouts, I noticed that the boys looked panicked when I asked them to recite the Scout Oath or Scout Law. It wasn't because they didn't have them memorized; it was because they forgot what they are called. So I came up with this little trick to help them. PDF of Boy Scout Law PDF of Boy Scout Oath
During the holiday break we talked a lot about the model horse hobby. It sparked an investigation of all the things you can make with craft sticks, match sticks and metal pop tops. We will explore some of those topics in weeks to come. How about a craft stick project on New Years Day to have something fun to do. Here is the first to get your creativity on line with some of the things you can do with Craft Sticks. You know the wooden Popsicle stick things. They come in a variety of sizes from tiny to the big tongue depressor size. How about a catapult. This idea from The Science Store On Line I can see lobbing mini marshmellows with this handy thing. Or a Craft Stick Kazoo for a musical instrument. The Craft Club gave us this idea. The Craft Elf can help you make a trinket box. a Holiday reindeer ornament.
