My students LOVE making these fun 3D landform maps each year. Now let me just tell you- I am always wiped out by the end of the day when we make these- but they really are a blast and so meaningful to make. I first put the kids into groups of 3 or 4. Then, they used a landform map in their Social Studies book to sketch where the mountains and deserts are located. This just helps them get a start when they begin painting the plains on the map. After they have an idea of where the mountains and deserts are, they paint all of the remaining area green. This shows where the plains are located. (The hills and rivers are placed over top of the green paint in the next few steps!) Next, we used blue yarn for the rivers. We obviously didn't add ALL of the rivers but just some of the major ones- Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Columbia. The mountains were the most tempting item to add to the map! The kids were just about drooling as they glued them down. Just a quick note- if you remove the wrapping before gluing the kisses down, they stick better! Marshmallows were used for the hills, gold glitter for the desert (I've used brown rice in the past but the glitter stuck MUCH better!) and goldfish for the oceans. Each time the kids added something new to the map, they also added it to the key on the right. Their maps also included a title, compass, labels for the oceans, and a box to sign their names. I am so proud of all of the hard work that my kiddos put into these maps! They were rewarded with some of the extra snacks which they were THRILLED about =) So fun! I am creating projects for the 3 year old class on Wednesday nights this quarter, and I thought I would share what we did. Abraham is divided into 3 lessons. The first lesson about Abraham is in Genesis 12. God told Abraham that He was going to show him a new land. Abraham would be a great nation. Abraham would be blessed and his name would be great. Abram was 75 when left Haran. Abraham took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. The project is for preschool and I had a basket of items that would begin the discussion. For instance, a blanket. Do you think Abraham took a blanket and pillow? Then, they could add their picture to their suitcase. These items Abraham might have taken and did not necessarily go in a suitcase (which he wouldn't have used like we do). So, then you add electronics, sunglasses, etc., things that we have now that they didn't then. Directions are in the download, but you can glue the sides of the suitcase for the students to put the items in, or let them glue the pictures to the inside and they can open and close it. I also gave them these stickers to add to the outside of their suitcase. When I use stickers with them, I cut theirs into strips so I can just hand each person their stickers so they can asdd them how they want to. Click here to download. This map is for Abram and Lot choose which land they want. Abram let Lot pick his first, and Abram took the other. He made good choices. I printed a teacher's visual in color and the students in black and white so they could color. Print, cut on solid lines and fold people on dotted lines. They will stand up and students can move them around the map. When they were done re-telling us the lesson, we rolled the maps up and tied them with a ribbon. I couldn't decide exactly what I wanted to do with project, so after several days of thinking about it, this is what I ended up with. And, the kids will love it! So, there are the two backgrounds in black & white only for the kids to color. These can be used together or separately. I printed mine on each side of cardstock. Then, I folded it into thirds (before class). It will stand for them to use as a background and they can just bend the folds to turn it around. Abraham and Sarah are in color only because I will have them cut and ready for the kids to use. They will also add star stickers to the stars and sand page. Make Social Studies come alive with this fun 3D world map activity for world geography. This craftivity can be used to help students study and learn the continents and oceans of the world. There are two different views of the world map: the Western hemisphere and the Eastern hemisphere. This craftivity first has the students coloring the globe outline, then labeling the continents and oceans, equator, and tropic lines, then locating major cities, including the city in which students live. *Note - this craftivity does not make an actual globe. It is a mapping activity - students work with 3 pages of the Western hemisphere and 3 pages of the Eastern hemisphere. When they assemble the map pages (in ANY order), the finished product resembles a globe shape. There are two different sizes included in this resource – one on full sheets and one on half sheets if printing copies is limited at your school. Print only the set you need (the questions / directions are the same for both). Students will finish the labeling and coloring (6 pages in total) before assembling the finished globes (assembly instructions included). I have also included a blank map outline for each hemisphere so you can add your own question, or have your students come up with their own question. Blank outlines can also be used as a cover in case you wish to assemble the globes into a flipbook style, rather than a 3D craftivity. A rubric is also included for formative or summative assessment. Completed craftivities are a fabulous way to decorate your classroom or bulletin boards. It’s a great way to have your students build a display they are proud to share. These globes would look fabulous lined up along a shelf. You have three different options for printing (you want your globes to be sturdy enough to stand on their own): - Print on white construction paper - Print on cardstock - Print on regular paper, then glue onto construction paper and cut out around the globe shape For easier completion, be sure students complete each page BEFORE they assemble (cut and glue) the craftivity.
