Admiral Sir John Hawkins (also spelled as John Hawkyns) (Plymouth 1532 – 12 November, 1595) was an English shipbuilder, naval administrator and commander, merchant, navigator, and slave trader. As treasurer (1577) and controller (1589) of the Royal Navy, he rebuilt older ships and helped design the faster ships that withstood the Spanish Armada in 1588. He later devised the naval blockade to intercept Spanish treasure ships. One of the foremost seamen of 16th-century England, he was the chief architect of the Elizabethan navy. In the battle in which the Spanish Armada was defeated in 1588, Hawkins served as a vice admiral and was knighted for his role [1]. William, John's father, was a confidant of Henry VIII of England and one of the principal sea captains of England. The first Englishman recorded to have taken slaves from Africa was John Lok, a London trader who, in 1555, brought to England five slaves from Guinea. A second London trader taking slaves at that time was William Towerson whose fleet sailed into Plymouth following his 1556 voyage to Africa and from Plymouth on his 1557 voyage. Despite the exploits of Lok and Towerson, John Hawkins of Plymouth is widely acknowledged to be the pioneer of the English slave trade, because he was the first to run the Triangular trade, making a profit at every stop.

EDITORS COMMENTS This print showcases the "Allegory of Music" from Le Livre des Echecs Amoureux Moralisés by Evrart de Conty, a French manuscript dating back to around 1500. The image, found on folio 65v of ms Francais 143 in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France, transports us to a medieval world filled with enchanting melodies. In this scene, we witness a group of musicians immersed in their artistry. A talented female musician takes center stage as she skillfully plays the harp, her fingers dancing across the strings. Surrounding her are other instrumentalists playing instruments such as dulcimer, flute, and bagpipes. Their harmonious tunes blend together effortlessly. The setting is ethereal; swans gracefully swim nearby while others soar above them. They seem captivated by the music and join in with their own melodious voices. The musicians' costumes reflect the medieval Gothic and Renaissance era they belong to - intricate headdresses adorn their heads while they perform alongside a portative organ. This exquisite artwork captures not only the beauty of music but also its ability to transport us through time and evoke emotions that transcend language barriers. It serves as a reminder of how art can connect generations and cultures throughout history. 16th century Gerlach Flicke - Sir Peter Carew (Scottish National Gallery)
New exclusive!! This digital pattern is for a low-cut, 16th century Trossfrau sock. Make a pair in linen for those hot days when wearing full or knee length hosen is just too much! Or make them out of wool and wear them over your hosen as an added layer of warmth and protection from the cold. This is a quick and portable project that is a great introduction to hand sewing. While it can be sewn by machine, do note that it may be a little more difficult to maneuver under the machine. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Landknechte (the plural of Landsknecht) were German mercenaries during the late 15th and 16th centuries. These flamboyant and oft-romanticized characters were known for their elaborately puffed and slashed outfits and wide, befeathered hats, making them popular subjects of contemporary artists. Woodcuts from the period occasionally include Trossfrauen, or female camp followers. These Trossfrauen (the plural of a single Trossfrau) accompanied Landsknechte on campaign and were responsible for carrying a Landsknecht’s supplies, procuring and preparing his meals, and managing, cleaning, and maintaining his personal effects. Along with their characteristic bundlein (wrapped veils), bloused skirts, and heavily-laden pack basket, many Trossfrauen are depicted wearing low-cut socks, either instead of or in addition to their hosen (tall stockings). One theory is that these short socks were worn to prevent unnecessary damage to the more expensive hosen or as a liner for their shoes for added comfort. After all, Trossfrauen were travelling almost exclusively on foot. Available visual resources depict these low-cut socks being worn by female camp followers and peasant women; it is unclear whether they were also worn by men. One entry from an inventory of the Swedish court in the early 16th century mentions socks with “lesser amount fabric” than ordinary socks, but does not specify the gender of the person for which these short socks were intended. While written sources on low-cut socks appear to be rare, an extant piece has luckily survived. This linen “inner shoe” was found in the Altes Rathaus of Regensburg, Germany, and is dated to the late 15th century. This amazing piece of material culture can give us clues as to the possible pattern and construction of the short socks worn by Trossfrauen in the 16th century. ________ CHOOSE YOUR SIZE - A-E small - E-I medium - I-M large To determine your size, you will want to measure the distance between your longest toe and your heel. The simplest way to do this is place a piece of paper on the floor, step on it with your bare foot, and then, using a pen or pencil, trace around your foot, being sure to hold your pen or pencil vertically. Measure the distance between the toe and heel on your tracing and compare your measurement to the included size chart. Select the letter that corresponds to that measurement. If you are between two sizes, it is best to start with the larger size and adjust down. If you have wide feet, measure the width of your foot from the outline you made earlier and compare your measurement to the width of your letter size sole piece on your printed pattern. If your width is wider than your letter size, you may need to blend two letter sizes together to get a more approximate fit. ________ PATTERN INFORMATION PDF pattern for instant download and printing at home or the office on US Letter size paper.
