Two chemicals, ammonium iron(lll) citrate and potassium ferricyanide, are combined to create a UV light sensitive solution. The solution is applied to a surface like paper. An object is placed on the treated surface and exposed to a UV light source, like the sun. After a certain amount of time the object is removed and the paper is rinsed in water. This stops the developing process and creates a permanent image. Places on the print that are white blocked the light from coming through. Areas in blue are places where light was able to penetrate the object or bend around the object. This type of photograph is called a photogram. It is a true to life image of whatever has been placed on the paper. Care of cyanotype prints on paper Cyanotypes are unique in that they prefer acidic conditions. Alkaline conditions will cause bleaching and fading of the image. Use only unbuffered, pH neutral or acid free matting, front and back, for framing your print. Direct sunlight will cause fading of the print. Do not display print in a location that will receive direct sunlight. Should fading occur because of exposure to sunlight place the print in a dark location and within a few days the print will darken back to its original color. This is a hand-printed contact photograph made using the 19th century cyanotype process.These are the woods near my house in northern California where I walk. They are a great comfort to me. The changing light and weather transform them so that every hour and every day is like seeing a new painting. This 10 x 19 inch edition is the smallest earliest version I hand-printed. WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE? The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image, with absolutely no ink involved. And since each print is handmade, tones will give gorgeous, subtle variations. The beauty of cyanotypes is that each print is absolutely unique.
Between two waters II -photo cyanotype print turned to tannin The cyanotype is an ancient photographic technique (late 19th century) which consists in insolating with UV light (insolous or sun so!) a watercolor paper coated with photosensitive chemistry (ferric salts). The fixation is done simply by soaking the draft under water. The cyanotype has an excellent hold in time and Prussian blue is characteristic of this technique (even architect blues ...) Each print is unique because of the coating of the emulsion on the brush support. Each print comes with white 24/30cm format passe-partout and therefore ready to be framed!
