Using feminist and womanist theory, Simone Alexander takes as her main point of analysis literary works that focus on the black female body as the physical and metaphorical site of migration. She shows that over time black women have used their bodily presence to complicate and challenge a migratory process often forced upon them by men or patriarchal society.Through in-depth study of selective texts by Audre Lorde, Edwidge Danticat, Maryse Condé, and Grace Nichols, Alexander challenges the stereotypes ascribed to black female sexuality, subverting its assumed definition as diseased, passive, or docile. She also addresses issues of embodiment as she analyzes how women's bodies are read and seen; how bodies \"perform\" and are performed upon; how they challenge and disrupt normative standards.A multifaceted contribution to studies of gender, race, sexuality, and disability issues, African Diasporic Women's Narratives engages with a range of issues as it grapples with the complex interconnectedness of geography, citizenship, and nationalism.
This is a 41 slide PowerPoint ESL adult conversation lesson in editable PPT format with text handouts and teacher’s notes. *THIS LESSON REQUIRES YOU TO DOWNLOAD COMMERCIAL VIDEOS FROM YOUTUBE! Lately marketers are embracing causes and trends in an effort to align with consumers who are growing resistant to traditional commercials. This type of ad is extremely effective because it evokes very strong emotions and subsequently gets shared and goes viral. These ads play wonderfully to our advantage in conversation classes, as they provide various emotional conversational topics, current trending social issues and controversy all in one package. Using videos in ESL is a great tool, it supplies an example of spoken English in its natural surroundings, it features many different accents and cultural examples as well as provides a good stimulant against boredom. This lesson includes six commercials that deal with “Motherhood” from different perspectives. They reflect different important struggles that mothers are confronted with and they are viewed from three diverse cultural perspectives: American, British and Canadian. Every commercial is followed by leading questions, research material on the topic and debate suggestions. Motherhood is a topic that marketers can’t resist. In the past years, many commercials have dealt with this issue from different aspects. Mother’s Day is also a good excuse for everyone to jump on the saccharine wagon. The problem with commercials is that the text is usually spoken very quickly. This lesson includes three commercials to which I’ve (painstakingly) written down the text so your students can follow along. If you find that I got some of it wrong (some of the words are difficult to make out over the music or the special effects), please let me know. I can guaranty you’ll enjoy teaching this lesson and your students will love it as well! IMPORTANT!!! * THIS LESSON IS STRUCTURED AROUND THE VIDEOS, WITHOUT WHICH – THERE IS NO LESSON! It requires you to download the commercial videos from YouTube! (links and instructions are provided) *The video slide is followed by a “question / discussion slide” after which there is a hidden slide for the teacher. PLEASE NOTE: * YouTube videos are sometimes taken down, it’s possible that you will find a wrong video or a slide saying that this video no longer exists at the supplied address. In the “notes” section and on the slide, you’ll also find the original name of the video. If you copy that name into the YouTube search engine you may get lucky and find this video at its new address. However, if the video no longer exists, you won’t be able to use that section. This lesson contains: ♚ A discussion about breastfeeding VS bottle feeding. ♚ Breast feeding in public places? ♚ A discussion about the roles and responsibilities of being a modern mother. ♚ What is the role of dad? ♚ A discussion about Being a role model for your children. ♚ What do kids these days need protection from? ♚ Is it OK to Swear in Front of Your Kids? ♚ What is the “perfect mom” ? I’m painfully aware of the contradiction in my choice of profession, but I can honestly say (after 25 years of teaching ESL classes) that there’s nothing I’d rather be doing. Much like other challenged individuals who go through life with one hand tied behind their backs, I make up for what I lack with abundant research, high quality graphics, humor, passion and love. I own every ‘correcting program’ available on the market and my lessons are proof read by wonderful, kind (and slightly horrified) TPT teachers, BUT there are always some errors that slip by us. If you feel offended by the existence of errors in what is supposed to be a teaching tool… THEN THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR YOU! If you are an open minded individual, that can except the possibility that you might find errors in the product that you are about to buy (you get a free product if you send me the errors to correct), then this product is for you and I hope it delivers everything you hoped for and more, along with my gratitude. ****************************************************************************************** Thank you! And they can gather information and make decisions in a timely manner. Most of all, strategic [...]

Many argue that nightshade vegetables causes various health issues. But are they actually unhealthy to eat? This article explores the current research.
Foreign intervention and technocratic governance: these are very contemporary issues, and ones with which liberals wrestle as much as reactionaries. Liberals may despise empire nostalgia, but many promote arguments about intervention and governance that have their roots in an imperial worldview. We should not imagine that apologists for empire are simply living in the past. They seek, rather, to rewrite the past as a way of shaping current debates. That makes it even more important that their ideas and arguments are challenged openly and robustly.
