IMLIL, 271x153 cm, unique creation handmade on a loom by our craftswomen from sheep's wool, according to ancestral know-how. Each rug reflects the creativity of the weaver and the influences of her environment and culture. Our rugs are traditional works of art that embody the Amazigh cultural heritage of Morocco. This carpet is named after Imlil, a rural commune located in the Marrakech-Safi region in the Al Haouz province in the High Atlas. The Béni Ouarain are an Amazigh ethnic group originating from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, they are renowned for their traditional crafts, the manufacture of hand-woven carpets. Traditionally, Beni Ouarain rugs are characterized by an ecru base decorated with geometric dark brown patterns. However, they have evolved to offer us a variety of stunning colors and patterns just like this work of art.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the push for independence in Western Sahara, Africa’s last “non-self-governing territory.” The Polisario Front—the formerly armed nationalist group that officially represents Western Saharans in their negotiations—signed a cease-fire with occupying Morocco in 1991, and since that time protests have been largely civil ones. But even though the UN, the United States, and most other powerful nations have never recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the area, the independence movement has been unable to make headway. Today, the Sahrawis are becoming increasingly frustrated. Western Sahara is emerging as a case study on the limits of the international community’s power to help a people win self-determination when they choose not to be violent, but to follow the rules.
