Hey everyone! It's Anna from Hanging with Mrs. Hulsey! The school year is officially in full swing-- and my students are definitely feeling more comfortable with me and each other! One thing I've decided we need to focus on more is our classroom community! Here are some quick ideas to help you promote a positive climate in your classroom! Use Team Builders Team building activities are easy to implement! They don't take a lot of time, students find them to be engaging, and they are often FREE! Here is a quick list of some of my favorite student team building activities: Human Knot (Students stand in circle, reach for hands of people across the way, and then they must untangle themselves without letting go. This can also be done as a spiderweb using a ball of yarn) Tallest Tower (Divide students into groups and give them supplies like straws, tape, blocks, etc. The team that can make the tallest tower wins!) Minefield (Set up a "minefield" that students must navigate a blindfolded partner through) Hula Hoop Pass (Can be played whole class or in teams. Students hold hands and must pass through a hula hoop as quickly as possible) Switch Sides If... (Use a chalk line, rope, or tape line. Have students stand on one side of the line. Read off items like "switch sides if you like to bake", etc.) The internet provides an infinite source of team building activities! I've included a few links below: http://www.ventureteambuilding.co.uk/team-building-activities/ http://www.momjunction.com/articles/team-building-activities-will-keep-kids-busy-summer_0074763/#gref http://mommieshobbies.blogspot.com/2014/01/switch-sides-if.html?m=1 Hold Morning Meetings Time is precious in my classroom because we departmentalize. It feels like we are always on the go. However, I feel that even something as small as a weekly morning meeting would help my students develop a more positive feeling toward one another. You can read more about morning meetings for older elementary students here! I also love this product from TPT! Write Daily White Board Messages I think this is a such a simple way to start the day off with a positive vibe! The night before (or morning of) write a simple prompt on the white board/chalkboard and have students respond on the board. This will foster another sense of ownership and community. You can find white board messages by searching google or Pinterest! Here are some quick ideas to get you started: 1 Thing Wednesday-- name one thing we've done this year that you'd like to do again! I Think I Can Thursday-- what is one goal you want to achieve this year? Flashback Friday-- what is one new thing you have learned this week? Write a compliment for a classmate by their name (no repeats!) Name 3 traits of a great friend What is your favorite book you've read this year? Thankful Thursday-- what is 1 thing you are thankful for? Make it Monday-- what is 1 thing you've always wanted to create?' Top 2 Tuesday-- write your top 2 favorite things about the school year so far Compliment Circles This activity would pair well with morning meetings! You and the students sit in a circle with everyone's legs out straight. Begin the compliment circle by giving a compliment to someone. Once someone has been complimented they cross their legs. Compliments continue until everyone has received 1. I think this is a great way to encourage students to see each other in different ways! Create a Kindness Board I created this one for the visual it would provide to my students. Plus, I wanted them to point out kindness when they see it in others! This one is easy to implement: 1. Print out the letters and hang on a wall or bulletin board. 2. Print the "caught being kind" strips on various colors of paper (I used Astrobright paper). 3. Cut the strips apart and keep on hand for when students catch others being kind. 4. When students experience a kindness or act of friendship, they come and ask you for a "caught being kind" strip. They write down their experience. 5. Start a paper chain and add a new link every time someone catches others being kind! You can find this HERE in my TPT store! Here is another type of board with a similar theme (kindness): You can find these fall themed board HERE in my store! I hope you found these ideas to be useful to implement in your classroom! If you have any questions-- feel free to leave them in the comment section!

I've been at Dos Rios/Two Rivers Elementary in Springfield all this week and last. We're making projects to take home, and some to sell at the Springfield First Friday Art Walk in May! This was their project that they were able to take home to their families: Self Portraits! For the older kids (grades 2-5) I did a more involved lesson on proportions of the face, colored with sharpie and tissue paper.... read that lesson by clicking here. For the Kinders and first graders, we did this version you see in the pictures. Read on to see how we did this lesson! Supplies: • Multicultural construction paper, cut in 6 x 9" sheets. • black sharpies • colored pencils • background colored construction paper, 9x12" • Small-ish rectangles of pattern paper (we used both wrapping paper and contact paper) • construction paper hair colors, cut into smaller pieces...half or quarter sheets. • glue sticks • scissors This can be done in 2, 30-minute sessions, or one longer one. • Day 1: Teach them suuuuper basic proportions of the face. Just show that the eyes go in the middle of the face, and show some ways to draw eyes, noses and lips. The first day, just draw the faces on the multicultural skin color papers, trace drawings with sharpie, and add some colored eyes (and whites of the eyes!) lips, and cheeks with colored pencils. • Day 2: Put it all together: cut a "shirt" rainbow shape out of the patterned paper, cut out the faces, add torn paper for the hair. Glue, glue glue. Then watch the cuteness happen. Love these!!

This engaging and impactful resource is designed to teach students the profound impact of their words and promote kindness in the classroom and school. The "Wrinkled Heart Activity" includes two heart templates, a band-aid printout, and a kindness pledge paper. It's a perfect addition to your classroom or hallway display, fostering a culture of empathy and thoughtful communication. Resource Contents: Heart Templates: Blank Heart: Students can personalize this heart with their own artwork and color it to their liking. Pre-written Heart: Features the phrase "Before you speak, think and be smart. It's hard to fix a wrinkled heart." Band-Aid Printout: A band-aid graphic to symbolize the healing power of kind words. Students can decorate this and attach it to their heart Kindness Pledge Paper: A pledge paper that reads: "I, ________, promise to always think before I speak because it's hard to fix a broken heart." Students can fill in their names and sign this pledge as a commitment to using their words wisely. How to Utilize This Resource: Distribute Heart Templates: Begin by providing each student with either a blank or pre-written heart template. Hand Out Band-Aid Printouts: Supply students with a band-aid printout, introducing it as a powerful symbol of the healing potential of kind words. Provide Kindness Pledge Papers: Distribute kindness pledge papers to each student. Encourage them to personalize these papers with their names. Engage in the Wrinkled Heart Activity: Decorate Your Heart: Instruct students to start by decorating their heart templates with colors and designs that represent themselves. Words That Wrinkle: Encourage students to say hurtful things to their hearts as they crumple them, such as "I don't like you," "I don't want to be your friend," or "you can't play with us." Apologize and Unwrinkle: After students have fully crumpled their hearts, guide them to begin apologizing. As they say phrases like "I am sorry for hurting you" or "I am sorry I was mean" have them try to restore their hearts to their original, perfect state. Reflect on the Activity: The Unforgotten Wrinkles: Engage students in a discussion about the activity. Highlight that no matter how sincere their apologies, the wrinkles in their hearts cannot be completely erased. These wrinkles symbolize the lasting impact of hurtful words. Impact of Words: Encourage students to share their thoughts on the significance of their words and the importance of thinking before speaking. Attach the Band-Aid: To conclude the activity, have students attach the band-aid to their heart templates. This action symbolizes the potential for kind words to mend the wounds caused by hurtful ones. Complete the Kindness Pledge: Remind students to complete their kindness pledge papers by signing them. These pledges serve as a tangible reminder of their commitment to using their words thoughtfully and kindly. Bulletin Board or Hallway Display: Create an eye-catching bulletin board or hallway display by showcasing the students' decorated hearts along with their signed kindness pledges. Include a title like "The Wrinkled Heart Activity: Using Kind Words to Heal" to draw attention and convey the lesson's message. Benefits: ⭐Encourages students to reflect on the impact of their words. ⭐Promotes empathy and kindness in the classroom and school. ⭐Fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment. ⭐Provides a visual representation of the power of kind words. This was the second project I did with my Grade 7's during our "Art of Japan" unit. They designed their own kimono using a version of a bookmark template found here on the Crayola website. Kimonos are the beautiful traditional floor length robes worn mostly by Japanese women on special occasions. They are very expensive (often exceeding $10,000!) and beautifully patterned. I showed students examples of kimonos and then had them sketch ideas for a pattern in their sketchbooks. Image Source Image Source Each student got a blank template (which I modified from the one on the Crayoyla site) showing a very basic kimono with the robe, body and Obi (the sash). There were lots of Obi-Wan Kenobi jokes during this demo...lol I drew my own simple template and then photocopied it onto regular paper. When I do this project again, I would copy it onto cardstock, as the regular paper was too thin, really. I mean, it worked, but cardstock would be better (more sturdy). Draw your design/pattern in pencil then colour in with colored pencils or markers or watercolours. Students could do any type of pattern they wanted- not only traditional. Here's a camouflage pattern below, for example. Draw a little face. Colouring with markers..... Then cut all the pieces out... The Crayola sheet shows how to fold it all together- I also walked around and helped the kids individually fold it. It's quite simple. Here they are lined up and chilling out against the whiteboard. If you have a laminator, I would laminate them to make perfect bookmarks (and to make them sturdier). Ta da! On display with their 'Cherry Blossom' paintings.
