This is a gentle and delicate representation the Our Lady. She is attending to a dove, and as is the custom in Victorian holy cards, the dove represents the you and I. The holy card meant to remind us of the delicate and intimate relationship we have with her. We think perhaps the trompe-l’oeil lilies and the wing of the dove outside the circle indicate that we have gone to her realm in prayer, as we do. We love this image. Bring to your loved ones the benefits of your goodness.” Boumard Fils, also known as Boumard et Fils, was a family-run publisher of religious art, active at the beginning of the twentieth century. Boumard Fils was located in the Saint-Sulpice neighborhood of Paris, the center of the religious printing industry in France. The artwork on their earlier cards, such as this one, is exemplary of the Saint-Sulpician style, which tends towards the sentimental. The double sided Wisdom's Seat holy medal, features Theotokos (the Mother of God) with Archangel Gabriel on the opposite side. Theotokos is another name for the Virgin Mary, and she also represents Wisdom in the Orthodox Church. This is a rare and beautiful medal. It's called Wisdom's Seat because the Madonna is shown in her iconic role as the Seat of Wisdom holding the Christ Child. “Saint Anne, Grandmother of the Church” by J. Wahl This dear picture of St. Anne lets us imagine her as the grandmother she was. Grandmother of Jesus and grandmother of the Church. Not much is known about St. Anne. We can infer from Scripture that she was a holy woman, fit to raise the Mother of God. We can also infer from our own experience that she would have helped Mary, the young, first-time mother, with the difficult responsibility of raising a child. Most of us know the tremendous love between grandmothers and their grandchildren, and we are sure this was true within their family as well. As for the artist, J Wahl is likely to be Josef Wahl (1875-1951), a Catholic artist from Dusseldorf who did a lot of Catholic paintings in parish churches and elsewhere. Judging from his history of works, he was a Catholic “go to” artist of the time. We’ve included a sample from a 1903 illustration in pretty much the same style. This painting of St. Anne is in the style of the Golden Age of Illustration, which we believe dates it to perhaps as late as the 1920s. Wahl at times would paint in kind of a folk style like M. Schiestl, an artist who appears frequently in our shop. It was later reprinted as a holy card by GFCHKM, the German Society for Christian Art, which was founded in 1893 and still exists today. St. Anne’s feast day is July 26. Saint Anne is a powerful patron for many, a few of which include housewives, mothers, and grandmothers. Max Schmalzl (1850–1930) was a German Redemptorist lay brother who worked as a painter and illustrator. He lived a monastic lifestyle, devoting himself to the making of Catholic art. This Last Supper is for a Missale published in 1923. Out of modesty, he normally didn’t sign his works but occasionally would put the initials F.M.S. on them, which stood for Frater Max Schmalzl. He was the fulfillment of an ecclesiastical art movement called the Nazarene school, and he lived its ideal of a humble, pious, and industrious painter-monk. Despite his monasticism, he was very famous during his lifetime. Even to this day, his woodcuts and illustrations are frequently used in Catholic printing, although no one knows they are his as his fame has left the earth. He left behind many masterpieces, and this is one of our favorites. In this one, we have such a carefully crafted balance of images. All the figures are done with such precision. Above the main image is Melchizedek, and below it is the Passover. We love this picture. We would have included it in our collection sooner, but it took us a year to be sure it was no longer in copyright. We have restored the colors and vividness towards the original beauty. We went through thousands of images of Joseph to find this one for you. It is beautiful and warm and shows a Joseph we could understand. A lot of the Josephs from the Renaissance to Victorian times are sweetened up or made to look epic, but that makes them look far-away or unnatural. This one has a manliness and strength we could recognize, as well as the quality of fatherly love. He is a carpenter, there are his tools. Behind him and Jesus is the banner of two trees. A banner is frequently used behind Mary in paintings of this era to suggest a courtly milieu. The lilies next to him symbolize his chaste heart. So we have a realistically strong Joseph, providing for his family, and also with a heart for God and a devotion to Jesus. For us, this is an ideal representation of masculinity. One for all men to emulate. We spent about a week restoring this one. Like many of our pictures, this is only available through us. This antique holy card from the late 1800s has all three hearts of the Holy Family. It is rare in that it includes the Chaste Heart of Joseph. Even today, this is quite uncommon. We feel it is a great reminder that, as a family, their hearts were united in love. For us, we can feel the warmth represented in this holy card. It helps us imagine the Holy Family and their warm embrace. The French inscription reads, “I give you my heart, I give you my life.” Looks great in a den or office, or near some wainscoting or wooden shelves, or anywhere you’d like a reminder of the presence and care of all three members of the Holy Family. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! The Rosary Based on an Antique Holy Card This beautiful, ornate print was done as a holy card by Louis Turgis, one of the great holy card makers of mid-19th Century Paris. He pulled out all the stops on this one, using all that was possible with the technology of the day. Starting with his engraving, he added the new process of lithography color to provide an image of great intricacy and precise, nuanced coloration, all in a holy card less than 3x5 inches. The results must have been stunning to contemporary Catholics! Note all the details! It was the Victorian aesthetic to have so much stuff in it, like their parlors crowded with furniture, art, knick knacks, and lush draperies. It gives us a rich and engaging montage to ponder and explore. There is a scapular, a miraculous medal, a book of the Litany of Loreto, a lily representing purity and the resurrection, a spindle for domestic work and motherhood. The Immaculate Heart is at the center of it all, surrounded by its golden radiance and a wreath of roses. The roses, of course, are what the rosary is about; saying our rosary is like offering a bouquet of spiritual roses to Our Lady. Note also at the base of it is the crushed serpent that Mary has defeated for us. Surrounding everything is the Rosary itself, a tool which can beautifully structure, or frame, our prayer life. "They are my safeguard." That's what the French means in this antique holy card from the late 1800s. It's the Hearts of the Holy Family. It is rare in that it includes the Chaste Heart of Joseph. Even today, this is quite uncommon. We feel it is a great reminder that, as a family, their hearts were united in love. For us, we can feel the warmth represented in this holy card. It helps us imagine the Holy Family and their warm embrace. The publisher was Emile Bouasse, and his partner was Louis Jeune. We think this card is from about 1875. It was made with chromolithography, a beautiful process, new at the time, to mass produce color-rich images. For us, it's kind of like Technicolor movies, which we love. There's nothing quite like the quality of that look and color. Looks great in a den or office, or even a kitchen, or anywhere you’d like a reminder of the presence and protection of those that love us most, of all three members of the Holy Family. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others.
