Erano le 21.42 del 13 gennaio 2012, quando la nave crociera Costa Concordia urtò uno scoglio all'isola del Giglio. Poche ore dopo, mentre la nave era inclinata sul fianco a pochi metri dalla riva, si consumava sotto gli occhi di tutti, un'atroce sciagura. Dei 4229 passeggeri a bordo, 32 non riusciranno a salvarsi. Già al mattino era chiara la dinamica dell'incidente. Il comandante, Francesco Schettino, durante una manovra di "inchino" (la pratica in uso di salutare i porti e le isole, avvicinandosi pericolosamente), tocca lo scoglio, il quale apre una falla di 70 metri sulla chiglia. Quando si accorge che la nave affonda, la porta verso riva facendola incagliare (questo gesto riesce forse a contenere il numero dei morti?), mentre la nave si inclina su di una fiancata. Da una drammatica telefonata tra il comandante e la Capitaneria di Porto (al telefono Gregorio di Falco), resa pubblica già al mattino, si apprende che Schettino ha abbandonato la nave quando questa doveva ancora essere evacuata completamente. Un gesto, che nella marineria, significa una sola cosa: codardia. Il resto è cronaca recente che ben conosciamo. Vi è un processo in corso e a breve la nave, dopo essere stata recentemente raddrizzata, verrà condotta in un porto dove sarà demolita. La Costa Concordia, nave costruita nei cantieri di Sesti Ponente dalla Fincantieri e varata il 2 settembre 2005, è lunga 290 metri, larga 35,5 metri, alta 70 metri e pesca 8,2 metri. Può arrivare ad ospitare 4880 persone (di cui 1100 di equipaggio). L'eccezionalità di questo naufragio è stato l'estrema vicinanza alla terra (non sono mancate le gite turistiche per osservare e fotografare il relitto) e l'enorme impatto mediatico che ha avuto sin dalle prime ore.
