100% Superfine Merino Wool Merino wool is a class of fine wools that spin into elastic yarns and are the standard of softness other fibers are judged by. Merino wool is next to skin soft and is a popular fiber choice for baby blankets and sweaters for small children, but is just as luxurious for adults as well. Shop our selection of Merino wool yarn below The yarn is spun from multiple thin strands, which gives extra elasticity, and this special construction makes it extra important to treat the garment right: Make sure that you knit with the correct tension and rather use a tight tension, than too loose. Don't wash your garment too warm and never leave it to soak. I never set out to write a crafting blog, with tutorials and patterns, WIPs and finished products, but I've learnt so much from other people's blogs that when I have something that might be useful to fellow knookers and would-be knoookers, I feel almost duty bound to share it. So here's a little tutorial on a new and improved method for knooking. I mentioned recently that I'd come across an easier way of doing the purl stitch, kindly provided by Ronda. After using this for a while I noticed that I was getting twisty stitches. [Edit: Ronda's method does not produce twisty stitches. She's now posted a video, from which I can see that I'd misunderstood her instructions for the purl stitch, so that's why I was getting twisty stitches. Anyway, my adapted version of misunderstood instructions ends up with a method that also works, so this is a third knooking method.] Twisty stitches don't bother me greatly, but having noticed them I started thinking about why they were happening, and thinking, and thinking... It gets a bit technical here, but only a bit. Each stitch leaves a loop on the needle/cord that either has the leading edge at the front and the trailing edge at the back, or vice versa. Also, each stitch needs the one on the previous row to be a particular way round, either leading edge or trailing edge at the front. If you do a stitch that needs the leading edge at the front, but the previous row left trailing edges at the front, then you end up with twisty stitches. [My misunderstanding of] Ronda's new purl stitch needs a leading edge at the front and also leaves a leading edge at the front. She changed the knit stitch as well, to leave a leading edge at the front so that it would be well set up for the new-style purl stitches. This only solved half of the problem, though, because [my... etc.] her new knit stitch needs a trailing edge at the front, so it still twists stitches when following the new purl. I've developed the new knit stitch so that it now both needs and leaves a leading edge at the front, the same as the purl stitch. This means they work together with no twisting. So here are some brief instructions, with photos, of the two stitches: Knit stitch With the working yarn at the back of the work, push the hook from the left of the stitch, straight through the stitch from front to back. Hook going through the stitch to start a knit stitch Take the yarn under the hook and up across the front of it, then pull the hook back through to the front of the work. Yarn across the hook for the knit stitch Purl Bring the working yarn to the front of the work and take the hook behind it, through the front edge of the stitch, from right to left (or the other way if you're left handed). Hook through the front of the stitch, ready to purl Take the working yarn up across the front of the hook before taking it over behind and right round the hook. As you pull the hook back through the loop, move it slightly to the back, so that the old stitch falls off the front. It is possible to drop the stitch off the back, but that way lies much twistiness and confusion. Winding the yarn round for the purl stitch I hope the words and pictures here are clear enough to explain this. Let me know if not and I'll have another go. Looking at these photos, my hands look pretty horrible. This is because I've been doing a lot of gardening recently and they are horrible!

Who doesn't need a little queer-wear? Ok, we're rolling our eyes at that too, but these little pride mitts are super cute and we hope they bring you joy. Fingerless mitts featuring a simple stranded colourwork pattern and a cute flag detail on the cuffs — we’ve shown three colour options, but there are lots of other pride flags you could easily sub in to customise them for your gift recipient. Design-wise these were a challenge. I really wanted to make something that explicitly featured the flags, and not just something that might be read as a cute rainbow. The thing is... everything I swatched was more cheesy and garish than cute. I eventually ended up here, with a small detail that combines a provisional cast on, intarsia, a folded hem, and double knitting within a few rounds. You’ll want to pay attention but the results are totally worth the effort. The colourwork echoes the striping of your chosen flag and increases are worked in a single column to shape the thumb. The mitts are completed with a ribbed cuff that’s long enough to fold up over cold fingers. Someone on your gift list is sure to appreciate these. Receiving them might be a welcome acknowledgement of their own identity (do be sensitive about outing someone at a family gathering though!), or perhaps you know someone in a position like healthcare or teaching where wearing them will be a subtle way to signal that everyone is welcome.

♥ With Summer in the UK seeming to have decided to hang fire for a bit, I took matters in to my own hands the other day and set about creating my own little piece of Summer for my kitchen shelf. Seaside Cottages, Cornishware china and a garland of Summer Daisies were definitely what was called for..... and here's what I did ! After a little dig around in my yarny odds and ends drawer I found some small amounts of cotton, DK I think, in white and cornflower blue and a length of some thin blue ribbon. I used a 3mm hook. You'll also need a small amount of stuffing for the crochet beads. The pattern for both the daisies and the crochet beads will work in any weight yarn, just remember to use the correct hook size to match. To make the Daisies: Begin by making a Magic Ring, and work 8 DC into the ring. Pull the ring closed and SL ST to join. Now work 2 DC in to each stitch. 16sts. SL ST to join and finish off. Sew in the ends. Join in your second colour and chain 7. Beginning in the 2nd chain from the hook work 6 DC, bringing you back to the beginning of the chain. SL ST in to the next stitch. Now chain 7 again and work the petal as before. Continue making petals around the circle. I found 14 petals to be about the right amount, leaving you a stitch to SL ST back into to. Finish off. Sew in your ends. I decided to block and stiffen my daisies, which I did by spraying them with Fablon Ironing Starch Spray and then pinning them out onto a board to dry for a couple of days. To make the Crochet Beads: ( for a full picture tutorial clink here Crochet Beads ) Round 1:Make a Magic Ring and work 6 DC into the ring. Pull the ring closed and SL ST to join. Round 2: Work 2 DC in to each stitch 12 sts. Round 3: Working in a continuous round, DC 36. Round 4: Decrease 6 times, 6sts. Finish off leaving a long tail. Stuff the bead and using a needle and the tail of yarn, run a gathering thread around the bottom of the bead and pull closed. Finish off and sew in the ends. To join the garland together I alternated the flowers and the beads and I used a large needle to thread the ribbon along the back of each daisy and through the centre of each bead. Once finished it was just a matter of hanging it in place, and whilst it may not be quite up there with a holiday in the Caribbean, it's more than Summery enough for me ! ♥ My little Seaside Cottages are made by the lovely Loraine of Shabby Daisies - Seaside Creations. She sells through Etsy or her facebook Page. ♥

***PLEASE NOTE - This listing is for a crochet pattern and is not for the completed item!*** This pattern is for the tent, kayak and oar, sleeping bag, campfire with logs and marshmallow on a stick, as well as the mouse, its backpack (containing a piece of cheese), its guitar and lantern! The pattern contains lots of photos to help you every step of the way. It is written in English, using American crochet terms. The pattern has been independently tested prior to publication. **You will need:** Yarn of your choice. Yarn weight doesn’t really matter - the size of your project will simply turn out bigger or smaller! I used Patons Smoothie DK yarn for the majority of my project (this is quite a thick DK yarn so it is equivalent to aran or light worsted weight in other brands) and my finished tent measures approximately 20cm long and 13cm tall. Please ensure that you use the same weight yarn to make both your tent and the mouse & the accessories to ensure that they will fit. **For the mouse you will need the following colours: ** Main mouse colour - I used pale grey (approx. 23.5m). Nose / ears / feet / tail colour - I used pale pink (approx. 13m). **For the tent & camping accessories you will need the following colours: ** Tent colour- I used red (approx. 186m). Tent Base / Campfire Base / Oar colour - I used dark grey (approx. 52m). Sleeping bag / Backpack colour - I used dark green (approx. 42m). Kayak / flames colour - I used orange (approx. 71m). Logs / Guitar strap colour - I used dark brown (approx. 7m). Guitar / end of logs colour - I used beige (approx. 13m). Cheese / flames colour - I used dark yellow (approx. 5m). Marshmallow colour - I used white (approx. 2.25m). **Please note** = The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide. The pattern refers to the colours that I used, however these can be substituted for colours of your choice. **You will also need:** A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook. A pair of 6mm black safety eyes. Some toy stuffing. Some finer black yarn or thread for adding the details to the mouse’s face and some fine grey thread for adding the strings to the guitar. ‘7 count’ plastic canvas. I had a 26cm x 33cm sheet (that’s 10.25 x 13.5 inches) & I used less than 1 sheet. A higher count (that’s the number of holes per inch) will mean the plastic is more bendy so stick to 7 count if possible. 2 medium buttons for the tent and one for the backpack (and a needle and thread with which to attach them). Other tools you will need are a tapestry needle, some scissors and some stitch markers. **You are welcome to sell the items that you make using this pattern, but please do not sell / share the pattern itself. Thank you.**
This .PDF CROCHET PATTERN is written in ENGLISH, in STANDARD AMERICAN crochet terms. This isn't a very difficult animal to crochet. The head and body are made in two pieces. The body is made with loop stitches that form on the inside of your work. When the body is finished, you turn it around and cut and model the loop stitches into realistic looking spines. The loop stitch is quite easy to crochet when you get the hang of it, but cutting and modelling the spines does require your own skill together with the instructions in the pattern. Size of finished hedgehog made with worsted weight yarn: 6.5 inch / 16.5 cm long and 3 inch / 8cm high. Materials For this crochet hedgehog you'll need worsted weight yarn (Lètt Lopi) and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook and lace weight yarn (Einband Lopi) held together, worked with the same hook. You’ll need two colours of Lètt Lopi, camel 1400 (or straw 1418) and murky brown 1420. Half a skein of each is more than enough. From Einband Lopi you’ll need brown 0853 and beige heather 0886. You’ll use these two as one strand and you can make at least three bodies with the two skeins. For the eyes I've used 7 mm animal eyes. I have needle-felted a round nose but you can also crochet a little nose with dark Lètt Lopi yarn (instructions below). You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads) and a wide comb or fork to model the spines. The crochet pattern contains An intro with useful info. List of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right. Gauge is unimportant for this pattern. If the pieces are crocheted tightly enough, they will not gape visibly when stuffed. You can make a little test swap to be sure.
