This Destination Unknown Afghan is like having two afghans in one using my double overlay mosaic crochet technique! The front of the afghan has a mesmerizing illusion of a hidden door, while the back has a repeating Hitomezashi stitch pattern! If weaving in the ends, or hiding them in an envelope border, is your least favorite part of a mosaic project, you’ll love making this afghan. It starts two rows at a time with a two-color chain for the fringe, the rows are worked separately, then joined together again to complete the two-color chain fringe at the end of the two rows. This “two-colour chain DS” is created by, and used with permission of, Assia Brill, creator of the Distitch technique. You can learn this two-colour chain DS on Assia Brill’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1IJzsKKCXY. To learn about Hitomezashi stitch patterns, visit Numberphile on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbfhzlMk2eY. Can you guess what words were used to generate the stitch pattern for this afghan? The answer is on the back (check out the last photo)! If you'd like to learn my double mosaic technique, download my Double Hearts Coaster Set pattern (https://kathrynclarkcrochet.com/doubled-hearts-coasters/) and follow along on my YouTube Channel (https://youtu.be/THF6wA2uMP0) ! BONUS: If you prefer an overlay mosaic version to the double mosaic technique, a pre-ticked overlay mosaic chart for the afghan front is also included with this pattern! Materials: The afghan was created with 4000 yds. of acrylic DK weight yarn and a size 6/0 (3.50 mm) crochet hook. A size 7/0 (4.00 mm) crochet hook is optional, for the beginning border only. Stitch markers are highly recommended. Finished Sizes: 43″ wide x 51-1/2″ long (not including fringe) This pattern is written in standard U.S. terms with additional terms created to define the double stitches. ------------------------------------------------------------------ **ACCESSING PATTERN PURCHASES ON ETSY** At the time of purchase, Etsy will email you a link to the pattern file(s); however, you can access your downloads at any time as follows: 1. This is a beautiful vintage collection of 17 knit edging. Adding a border or edging of some kind can transform a plain garment into something a little more fancy. Edgings can be simple, textural, scalloped, or lacy and there is no end to stitch alternatives. Edgings can be worked horizontally along the cast-on edge, or vertically as a strip that is sewn in place once it is complete. Simple edgings are worked over just a few stitches and rows and take very little time to complete. Bobble and lace edgings, which involve increasing and decreasing stitches and a more complex written pattern, can take a little longer, but are a pretty alternative to a plain rib border, for example. More elaborate edgings, such as lace, tend to work better in a crisp, fine yarn such as cotton, since this gives clear stitch definition and is less likely to stretch. Before you add a border , think carefully about what style would be most suitable for the garment; a simple border works well on a complex piece, while a lace border is more effective on a plain piece.
