Aloha friends! I know it's not October yet, but it is one of my favorite months! So many fun activities and ideas with Halloween and Fall that it is hard what to decide to do. In science our standards for 2nd quarter include teaching about habitats. The Hawaii State Standards include: Content Area: Science FINAL Grade / Course: 2 Quarter: 2 The Benchmark Map is developed with the following premises: · All benchmarks for the grade level/course will be achieved in a school year. · Major understandings are the big generalizations for the topic/concept. ◊ Italicized benchmarks are taught and assessed in more than one quarter. Big Idea(s) / Major Understanding(s): Students will understand that... Different habitats support different organisms. Habitats are part of an ecosystem. Animals depend on plants and other animals as part of a process called a “food chain.” Food chains combine to form food. So last year I created a unit to include all of these skills and more. I created resources to teach about Nocturnal animals in a variety of habitats. I have covered desert, ocean, woodlands, rainforest and pond. For the last few weeks I have been updating this unit and it now includes all of this. I also wanted to integrate into my Daily 5 and Math centers so I also added in the following centers. State testing has started so that means a different schedule than normal, so shorter classes for the next couple of weeks! This may sound fun, but it's not! lol 45 minutes, once a week, is not enough time to begin with, much less 35 minutes! They're coming at different times as well, and the natives are getting restless this time of the year anyway! I saw this precious idea on Instagram, (@the_doodle_birds) and thought the kids would have fun with this quick and pretty simple lesson on line, shape, and color! They're practicing their drawing skills, tracing skills, their coloring, and painting all in one, 1 day project! & in case you haven't noticed, Mrs. Stacey loves owls so this is a win, win! Here's how we created our own! Materials: 90 lb Sax multi media paper Sharpie Markers Pencils Sax liquid watercolors oil pastels for the eyes After we pass out the paper and pencils, we get to work doing a directed drawing with me. We draw the upside down U first, draw the V for the beak second, make it look like an ice cream cone, and then we move on to the eyes. Next, we do the wings, and start on our feather lines. After we complete our drawing, we trace with a Sharpie, color our eyes with an oil pastel, color the beak with a sharpie, and then we're ready to paint! I set out trays of pre poured liquid water color. I love how vibrant their colors are! Here's some of our fantastic finished first grade birds! Here's some awesome artists from Mrs. Black's class!

This was a quick one day lesson to go along with a sea-themed music program. I mixed up a bunch of colors of tempera paint, and watered it down a bit. Students started by painting a half circle on their paper in one color, making sure it was pretty drippy. Then they dipped their paintbrush back in the water and added more water to the bottom of their half circle. After that they picked up their paper and did a little tapping (vertically) against the table to get the tentacles to drip down. They did each jellyfish one at a time, picking a new color for each one. Finally they did a little splatter painting. This was fun- the kids really got excited when some of the tentacles ran together and changed colors.

Thank you to everyone who visited the Sew Loved opening night! The gallery was packed with artists and their families talking about all of the great soft sculpture art while noshing on grapes and cheese cubes. The photo above was taken at the very end of opening night. This young artist wanted to stay until the very last so he didn't miss the chance to share his art work with any last minute gallery goers. Stop by to see the colorful work of Sandy's 6th grade math group also displayed in the gallery. They created ratios comparing the different colors used in the exhibit! We had 60 pieces in the show submitted by students, teachers, parents, and grandparents! Here are a few to share with more on the way. I am so impressed with the inventiveness of our creative artists!

My son’s fascination with jellies hasn’t waned since we did our first jellyfish activity (check out the awesome tunnel book we made here). When I picked up Bob Barner’s book Fish Wish at the library for our youngest boy, I marveled at the amazing art – especially the two pages full of floating jellyfish. Barner’s book was the inspiration for this art project. Supplies 1 sheet of thin white gift wrap tissue paper (or perhaps used dryer sheets?) 1 piece of blue paper Grey yarn Glue stick Scissors Pencil White glue Jellyfish body patterns (download the ones we used here) Book Before we created our own mixed-media jellyfish art, we read a wonderful book by Twig C. George. What I loved about Jellies: The Life of Jellyfish is that it was written with a child in mind. (It starts “If you were a jellyfish …”.) It was hard to imagine a “bump and sting” lifestyle, but that’s precisely what George’s book had us doing. Seventeen kinds of jellies were pictured and identified, giving my son and I plenty to discuss about their similarities and differences. This book is, of course, non-fiction, but it read like a wonderful fiction adventure in which we both pondered living as a jellyfish would! Writing When we were done reading, we put the book aside, and I gave my son some jellyfish writing paper to record five facts he’d learned. (Writing is my son’s achilles heel, so whenever I can sucker him into doing it, I will.) Download this writing paper here. Art Now it was time to make our ‘underwater’ masterpiece. I gave my son the patterns and showed him how they’d be put together. Download a PDF of the patterns (top) here. It was up to him to decide which jellies to make and how many. Now he traced the patterns onto the thin tissue paper and cut them out. (Cut carefully, the paper tears easily!) Note: In order to make it to swimming lessons in time, I helped with the cutting. Once cut, we used a gluestick and layered the tissue onto the blue paper to make the jellyfish. Lastly, he cut and attached random lengths of grey yarn at the bottom of each jelly as stingers. Some dots of white school glue did the trick. The final result was amazing!

I was inspired to teach this lesson after seeing these beautiful sculptures on Pinterest, from the Italian website http://www.biavatibottegadellestelle.it/ - La Bottega Della Stelle. I was taken with the simple fish forms and textures, and I really wish I had some of those beautiful neutral glazes, but no luck this late in the year, so we opted for bright tempera. Maybe next year! We built these in one session - we started with a thick pinch pot and flipped it over and added a variety of coral, seaweed, starfish, and other details. Then we formed a slab and added details to both sides to create the fish. Lastly, at the end of our 45 minute session, we poked holes in both using a wooden dowel and a slight stirring motion to enlarge the hole for shrinkage. After a bisque firing, we painted the surfaces with liquid tempera and added a bit of hot glue. They turned out beautifully! She named this one "Emo Nemo" - clever! Haha
