I found this great idea at Carrots are Orange and thought how useful it might be for an Ascension prayer activity. Talk about Jesus' ascension in Acts 1. Even though he has ascended to heaven and we can not see him, he is still with us, hears us and helps us. Draw round a CD and then draw a spiral inside it. Think about things you would like to pray to Jesus about- help, thanks, blessings for others etc and write or draw them inside the spiral. Cut the spiral out and thread a piece of string through the top so that you can hold the thread and the spiral will dangle down (see picture below). The spiral will spin slightly just by virtue of being held, but when held over a bulb or source of heat, the spiral will spin much more because of the rising of hot air. Even though we can't see the hot air, it is still there, rising up. The movement of the spiral gives a 'rising' or 'ascending' visual for the written or drawn prayers and a reminder that, even though we can't see him, Jesus is always with us.
general view. each coloured segment contains one station. each station has a track of words and music which is listened to on an ipod shuffle.
This is an easy idea to help pray for healing. Stickers with names on might work better because we found that pens don't easily write on bandage! Pray for people who are ill and ask God to heal them. Write their name on the bandage.
In this hectic world, we all need a sanctuary—a peaceful oasis where we can retreat, unwind, and find our center.

This week our Sunday service has unexpectedly turned into an all-age event and we've had to come up with some interactive prayers that will fit the lectionary based talk. Thank heavens for the excellent resources at Blackburn diocese! I really recommend their weekly@ materials, especially if you are a smaller church, like we are, where you have a wide range of ages in the same children's group. Plus it is free! I have written some all-age prayers that can be used with a whole congregation, basing the idea on the Paper Aeroplane Challenge Game in their lesson plan for this Sunday (September 2nd). These prayers are based on the theme of 'letting go' of what keeps us from God and keeping our hearts focussed on Him. They fit roughly with Mark 7: 1-8, 14, 15, 21-23 (this week's gospel reading), but could easily stand alone. You will need: a piece of paper and a pen/ pencil for each person (A6 size paper should be fine) Ask each person to write their name and the name of someone they want to pray for on the piece of paper. They will be praying for themselves and for that person. Ask everyone to make a paper plane with the paper. You might need to demonstrate for some people and some others will inevitably make something incredibly fancy! Ask everyone to hold their plane as you pray. God, we love you and we want to come closer to you. Help us to let go of the things that keep us from focusing our hearts more fully on you. Help us to let go of fear, let go of the need for power, let go of friendships that hurt us, let go of habits and addictions that cause us and others harm, let go of greed, let go of anger let go of jealousy let go of lying let go of laziness let go of hatred let go of selfishness let go of pride let go of gossip Amen Now ask everyone to draw a heart on their plane. As we let go of those things that keep us away, help us to bring our hearts closer to you, Lord God Ask everyone to let go of their plane and watch it fly as an Amen!

We had a fantastic day at school today exploring the prayer stations that will be part of the new prayer room there. The prayer room is still in the process of being finished but it will be a permanent fixture in the school when it is ready. We wanted the children to get to know what would be in there so that, when the time came, they could get stuck straight in! To make sure that whole classes could make use of the prayer activities (the room itself is only big enough for about 10 children at a time), we set them out in the hall and each class spent half an hour exploring and feeding back. Here's what we did... Thanks Using playdough to make things we are thankful for... Labelling duplo and building 'thank you' towers Please Prayers pegged to a prayer net Sorry Sorry prayers drawn or written into the sand and then smoothed over as a sign of forgiveness and a new start. Worries Worries written on mirror speech bubbles with dry wipe pens- the prayer room will have large mirrors on the wall that the children can write on! This was an incredibly profound station, even for the younger children. Others Laminated maps and post it notes laminated people shapes and dry wipe pens What would you like to say to God? A chalk board to write questions and prayers to God. One of the walls in the prayer room will be a chalk board We were amazed by the depth of the children's prayers and a few of the teachers were even moved to tears. It really brought home to us the importance of giving the children space and freedom to express their spirituality, fears, thanks and questions and we can't wait to get the prayer room established!
One of our new world focussed prayer stations this term looks at hunger. You will need: A world map (I've labelled it with names of countries where there is famine and put some dots on it so that the children can find the countries) a pot of uncooked rice a spoon a plate instructions (below!) Look at the map and see the places in the world where people are dying of hunger. Ask God to send people who will help them and pray that the world will be a fairer place. Pray for charities who bring food and help to the hungry. Ask God to show you what you can do to help. As you pray, put a spoonful of rice onto the plate.

This two-tone porcelain bowl is white on the inside with a colorful bird attached to a small branch. The exterior of the bowl is a smokey light blue. Psalm 91:4 makes its way around the bowl. He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge. This bowl is named after my grandmother Nana because she loved birds. The Josephine comes with a matching set of 25 prayer cards and sits in "nesting material" inside the gift box. This makes a wonderful Christian gift! Bowl dimensions are 6 1/4″ x 3 1/2″ - Made in Poland & Italy *The outside of this prayer bowl is spray painted by hand and can have imperfections. We are honored to support our local charity Mary Lee’s House, financially and with prayer. Every Angie, Celeste, Bonita, and Josephine prayer bowl comes with a prayer specifically written for the children who are supported by the staff and agencies of Mary Lee's House.

Over the next few weeks we are going to take a journey through a prayer labyrinth. Join me as we take this spiritual journey reflecting on God and Jesus and our relationship with God through His Spirit. Prayer labyrinths were a common feature in many medieval cathedrals. They were marked out on the floor for people to walk through slowly, for a time of contemplative prayer and reflection. A prayer labyrinth is a pilgrimage that draws the participant inward for a time of reflection and then back out into the world. Many churches have set up labyrinths on the grounds around the church. I helped set one up in a church auditorium a number of years ago and had a labyrinth of sorts set up in the woods near my home for a family gathering. They can be adapted for use in any setting. Labyrinths are used as a means to enter into God's presence and reflect upon how our time with God can be used as we live out our lives here on earth. Moses kneels before a Holy God. As we begin our journey, we enter into a time of stillness before God. An angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the flames of fire from within a bush. As Moses approached the bush, he heard the voice of God call his name and he said, "Here I am." "Do not come any closer," God said, "Take off your shoes for the place where you are standing is holy ground." Exodus 3:5 Before we enter into the labyrinth, we need to focus our attention completely on God. He is holy, He is eternal, He is our maker and our redeemer. Whenever we approach God, we need to be mindful of His power and might. Often, people don't have a fear of the Lord, but it's important to give Him the honor He deserves. Offer God praise for who He is and what He has done in your life. When your focus is on God and your mind is set on Him, you are ready to begin the journey. The first place we stop on our journey is the foot of the cross. As we think about Jesus and the sacrifice he made for our sins, we are reminded of our baptism. Visualize a drop of water representing the cleansing that comes through the blood of Christ. Thank Jesus for his sacrifice which has made it possible for you to enter into God's presence. A drop of water represents our baptism into Christ Jesus. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus is the way to eternal life, the way to the Father. After we have given our hearts to Jesus, we can approach the throne of God because we have been cleansed of all unrighteousness. As our journey continues, we need to take a moment to turn off the noise of the world. Each one of us is bombarded almost constantly with noise. Whether the noise is a result of living in a large family, listening to the radio or watching television, we need to remember that when it is time to focus on God, all outside distractions hinder our time alone with God. "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46:10-11 Spend time quietly before God - listen for His leading and give Him an opportunity to speak to your heart. Next week, we'll move on through the labyrinth examining our hearts and our motives.
