Happy Imbolc Everyone! What is Imbolc? (January 31st, February 1st or February 2nd depending on the region and which version is celebrated) Well - essentially it is a pre-christian festival celebrating lactating sheep and the increasing power of the Sun as the Winter season begins to change to Spring. In ancient times Imbolc was especially important as it meant heard animals had just given birth their first offspring of the year or had just begun lactating providing milk to the people. From the earliest times, Imbolc has been associated with the goddess "Brigit" - a Celtic fire goddess. Imbolc celebrations often include large bonfires, or large quantities of candles light throughout the home. Meals served on this day are often heavy with cream. Later as Roman Catholic control took over England, Ireland and Scotland - the church created St. Brigid's Day - so that they could more easily fit the Christian faith into the daily lives and traditions of the Pagan people. Some Catholics today have carried the pagan traditions of lighting numerous candles into what is called "Candlemas". Celtic Pagans would create solar wheels out of rushes or straw by continually folding them around a single shaft in a counter clockwise fashion and then tieing the ends of the cross. It was done to honor the Goddess Brigit and the increasing power of the sun as Spring began. Later Christians associated the custom with S. Brigid of Kildare who is venerated as one of the patron saints of Ireland. It is said that she wove one of these crosses at the deathbed of her Pagan Lord and told him the story of Christ and the symbolism of the cross. Upon hearing of the meaning, he asked to be baptized and died shortly after. Pagans believe the solar wheel or "Brigit's Cross" will provide protection if hung in their home. Neo-Pagans also use the cross to invoke the goddess brigit when calling upon her for help or honoring her in ceremony. The modern day odd celebration of Groundhog's Day is also linked to Imbolc - as the groundhog supposedly determines the start of spring based on the appearance of his shadow or not.

St. Brigid in her Spring Cloak. The greens represent the dark evergreen colors at the top, contrasted with the new bright growth of spring. Materials include: Willow branch, manzanita branches, pearly everlasting flowers, and dry chaparral grasses and flowers. Her head is stuffed with the lichen usnea. Techniques include: stuffing, tying, machine applique, and machine piecing. This is an interpretation of a traditional "corn dolly", using materials from the local chapparal ecosystem of the Central Coast of California. The willow branch is from a riverbed, part of the watershed of the Monterey Bay. St. Brigid's Day is celebrated on the first or second of February in Ireland, and coincides with Imbolc, one of the four seasonal celebrations of the Gaelic calendar.
I have wanted to try making a St. Brigid's cross for years, but never got around to it until now. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, and we had a lot

[image source] Did you know that witches and trick or treating are part of Scandinavian Easter traditions, which are still celebrated in parts of Sweden and other Scandinavian countries? On the Saturday or Thursday before Easter, young children dress up as witches or påskkärringar (the kindly, apple-cheeked, headscarf wearing kind, similar to Italy's la befana, the Christmas witch!) and go door-to-door asking for candy or other treats. How neat is it to have Halloween-like traditions in springtime?! [image source] This tradition stems from the old belief that witches were a their most powerful during Easter week and that they would travel to Blåkulla (Blue Mountain) via broom (or even ride stolen livestock like cows, goats, sheep, or even cats - see image below) to cavort with the devil on Maundy Thursday through Saturday. [image source] To honor this old belief, Scandinavian children dress up as witches and go trick-or-treating, like Halloween! In some parts of Scandinavia children leave Easter cards or a small token of thanks to the houses they visit. Many of these cards feature images of påskkärringar, or Easter witches. [image source] I love how you can find traditions similar to Halloween throughout the year for many different holidays. I love the Scandinavian tradition of Easter witches and it is fun to learn about different holiday traditions from around the world that relate to Halloween. Glad påsk (Happy Easter)!

It is made of things that delight most in the night and exhibits its virtues by night." The following is a traditional recipe for making Kyphi. If you want to stick to it fine, but you may also omit or substitute certain herbs if some of the ingredients are difficult to obtain. .Place 1/4 cup raisins in a bowl. Add just enough white wine to cover the raisins, cover loosely with a tea towel or cheesecloth, and allow to steep for seven days. On the third day, blend equal parts of the following powdered herbs in a bit of white wine: Juniper, Acacia, Henna, and Sweet Sedge Root. After two days drain and reserve any liquid. On the last day, drain the raisin mixture, reserving the liquid. In a small bowl mix together equal parts of the following ground herbs: Calamus, Gum Mastic, Peppermint, Bay Laurel, Orris, Cinnamon, and Galangal. Set aside. In another small bowl blend together: 1 T. Powdered myrrh, and 1 T. clove honey. To this mixture add the ground herbs, and the raisins and herbs steeped in wine. Blend well. Add a little of the reserved wine if the mixture becomes too dry. Follow the directions for making cone or block incense. Mix the ground ingredients together, crumble in the rose buds and lemon grass. If you can get aquillaria wood, use 1/2 teaspoon to 1 cup of the other mixture; otherwise, it can be left out.) .Take the raisins out of the wine and blend them into the mixture and add the honey. Kneed the mixture well and crumble with your hands. Spread it out on a clean cloth to dry in a warm place away from oven heat and direct sunlight. Dry for seven to 14 days, turning often. Once it has dried, it can still be formed into the traditional pea-sized pellets for burning. Although an ingredient or two may not have translated correctly, this should be pretty close to the actual incense used in Egyptian temples. Ingredients: 3/4 part Honey 3 part Raisins 1/4 part Copal 1/4 part Myrrh 1/4 part Orris 1 part Sandalwood 1/4 part Storax 1/2 part Frankincense 1/2 part Cinnamon (REAL stuff only, and grind it forever) Red Wine (enough to moisten mixture) Benzoin (enough to roll balls in) Thoroughly grind all ingredients separately, then mix together groups of ingredients by nature: resinous together, powdery together, etc. Finally, mix all batches together, add red wine to moisten, then roll into 5/8" balls and roll balls in benison. Light both the incense and the candle while thinking of manifesting money into your life. Always remember, you do still have to work at manifesting prosperity, it will not come to you if you are not willing to work for it. Moon This incense is used in many rituals and is a common spell component. It is an incense of increase that is deceivingly easy to make. Use all of your focus and energy, your will and intention, while making this scent. It is used over charcoals (the one's specifically made for incense) or over a ritual fire. CAUTION If used over a ritual fire, flames will leap up along the dust trail of this incense powder! There will be sparkling (sparks) of incense outside of this trail of flames as well! This is an impressive effect, but dangerous if you are not practiced at it! Start out small and toss about 1 teaspoon of it over the glowing coals or flames, all at once, don't trail the dust or sprinkle it. Stand away from the fire, and upwind. Use in areas that do not require burn permits, and have something to douse the fire nearby. Do not use if you are wearing gauzy or loose ritual robes and costumes. Within the three days prior to the actual full moon, but not after! Gather the ingredients required, along with a pestle and mortar to blend them in. If desired, you can use your cauldron, and some sort of crushing or mixing tool. 1 ounce (about 30 grams) of the finest sandalwood powder you can find (santalum album) 5 grams (a marble sized nugget) of amber resin, NOT the stone! The soft, sweet smelling resin that is often imported from India, available at health food stores, and of course herb and Witch shops. 3 drops of vanilla essential oil. NOT the perfume or fragrance oil, only true vanilla from the orchid (Vanilla planifolia or Vanilla aromatica) If this is cost prohibitive or unavailable, use real vanilla extract available at most any grocery store. Preferably outside, under the actual full moon, or indoors near a window where the moon is visible: Fill the mortar or cauldron with the sandalwood powder, and crush the amber into it with the pestle or tool of your choice. Use clockwise or deosil blending motions. Focus on the energy of the full moon, or if you are making the incense for a specific spell, focus on the goal of that spell alone. You can incorporate your favorite words of power or chant while doing this. When the powder is smooth and consistent, add the vanilla, one-drop at a time while saying your chosen words of power, (which is best) or the following (which will suffice in most cases): “Drop of moon, grant my boon.” Blend in the drops in the same way you blended in the amber resin. Place the mixture in a clear glass jar with an airtight lid. Keep it away from heat, sunlight, and moisture. Charge it under the light of the full moon on the three days prior to it becoming actually full. The full moon light penetration is the reason for not storing this in an opaque jar. It is ready for use immediately, but can be charged more if desired.
