This old discarded book made into a music box has been a thought rolling around in my head since my Music Box Project Class this year at the Club Scrap retreat. Finally it was time to put it together! AND glad I took the time! Now, this old book has become a cute little keepsake currently sitting on my coffee table. Also at Club Scrap, the Music Box Mechanism was available separately, so I had what I needed to get started. Crank it up and it plays "Fur Elise", love it! On the inside, I cut three nooks from the inner pages. One large enough for the 2"x1-3/4" music box mechanism to go inside, then one for holding maybe photos or jewelry, and the smallest nook holds a little bottle. I made the smallest nook more shallow to accommodate for a secret matchbox drawer below. Cutting a little nook into the pages behind the key hole hardware so the end of the key can fit inside seemed like a good idea too. Well, ya know, while your at it, you might as well do it right! There is a hole drilled through the book's back cover to let the music box crank work freely. Now for a couple pictures concerning the construction. I started with the easiest step, stamping the front cover with the Vogue Love Is Eternity Stamp. Then moved onto cutting the inside pages. Along with all the cutting, I would have to say gluing all the pages together was my least favorite part, but still enjoyed the progress of each step and getting to decorate it in the end, and especially now that it plays music!!! Who else has an altered book that they can crank up? Anyone? Anyone? I wish I could say I carved the heart with wings wooden pc that is now attached to the lid myself, but I happened to see it in the clearance bin at Michaels Craft store. It was bare unfinished wood and attached to a frame, after it got it home I was able to use a large knife to free the glued on heart/wings from the frame. Then it just needed some acrylic paint and distressing before it embellished my altered book music box project. The possibilities of book altering are certainly endless, and this was a really fun altered book to show you, hoping you like! I'm off to crank up my altered book. Kay

Okay so I've been remiss--I haven't continued on my Desiderata road for a few weeks now...but I do have an excuse. I was invited to make some of my 3D mixed media pieces for a show called Paint The Town that took place last Saturday night here in KC. It was such a fun event! I made some new wire pieces and chatted with folks along with selling some of my pieces-here's a few of them: The Bookworm-made from an old dictionary, clay, dollhouse lamp, wood The Monkey Suit-glass cloche, wood, wire, metal, clay Forest For The Trees-wire, clay, fabric, metal, LED bulb, electric cord
"SEW (long ago)" An altered book containing a collection of vintage sewing notions. The following photos of altered pages end with an explanation of the book and what is on each page. Inside back of book cover contains notions and salesmen samples of buttons. Needles and Snaps. Zipper, Sewing Machine ad, and Baby Buttons. Thread, Measuring Tape, and Advertising. Buttons, Hooks, Eyes, Cross-Stitch. Buttons, Snaps, and Binding. Fabric Swatches, labeled. Quilting, Thread, Buttons, and Needles. Buttons, Needles, and Measuring Tape. Men's Shirt Buttons and Patterns. Vintage Assorted Needle Packet and Advertising. Inside Front Cover has Salesmen Sample Card of Buttons. The great majority of these vintage sewing notions, buttons, and various advertising samples belonged to my maternal grandmother and were passed down to me. A few I have added over the years when I found them in antiques stores and couldn't resist including them in my collection. Back in the day, advertising graphics were (at least to me) miniature works of art. Their colorful illustrations really caught the eye, which is why I believe many of them have survived. They were just too pretty to toss out. This altered book is about 11" x 8" and considering all the 3-D items I have included in it, unable to close completely. Nevertheless, I like having this sewing collection from long ago all in one place and not simply loose in a sewing basket, as it was before. The cover was my favorite part to create - it almost always turns out that way. I saved the best for the cover and it includes an old pair of embroidery scissors, an antique bobbin with thread, a needle threader, tape measure, two cards of vintage buttons, very old snaps still attached to binding, thread, ribbon, cross-stitch, and several pieces of old lace and rick-rack. Small and not seen very well is a ribbon bookmark with a thread card and a miniature silver thimble hanging from it. The book also has tabs on each page - these are marked with the various sewing vocabulary. *Click on any of the photos once or twice to enlarge and see them better.

Hi guys :) Hope everyone is doing well. *Big wave* to all the new followers I have noticed popping up :) I am stopping by today to share my latest design team creation for Ingvild Bolme. It was originally a faux book box which I have altered to create a special treasure chest for all my Ingvild Bolme embellishments. The outside of the box has been painted with several art mediums and crackle paint around the edges. I have used Prima Lifetime Papers along with some stamping, Luminarte Twinkling H20's and a glass bead gel medium. The wing nuts along the spine are amazing aren't they? They are from the Tiny Junkyard Findings - Special Screw Packs by Ingvild Bolme as is the cute bolts which are from the Tiny Junkyard Findings - Bolts And Nuts pack. I have also used an Ingvild Bolme 30mm typo bulb ( these are my all time favourite embellishment!) and an awesome Junkyard Findings etched brass typo zip. And that cute little resin bird is from Ingvild's Shabby Chic Treasures - Fly Away Collection. On the inside I have created some pull out draws using some grungeboard which has been painted and then the front covered with the Prima Lifetime Papers along with some more stamping and art mediums and have added some heat embossed metal label holders. To purchase any of the Ingvild Bolme Products Used: or see www.primamarketinginc.com The other design team member have some amazing projects also, you can check them out here. Thanks for stopping by :) I hope you liked my project. It is my first ever 'altered' item and have to say I loved doing it so you may see lots more!! Georgia xox
Ok, I confess it's not really books, and not really vintage wallpaper. This was actually one of those book boxes....Tell me I fooled you ...

Have you seen our next advertised workshop on the website? No? Well for a bit of a change we are going to be holding an Introduction to Altered Art Class where you will be provided with all the materials to come away with two altered pieces just like these below. This first is an altered clipboard, and hosts a multitude of different techniques using a range of mediums from inks, pastes and powders. That measuring tape strip is even my by hand.... ...and the second piece we will be creating is this gorgeous altered book with the inclusion of handmade flowers and a Prima stamped doll. During the four hours we shall aim to complete both projects. All materials needed are supplied, although you are welcome to bring some of your own tools if you prefer. This is not just open to avid crafters...we are welcoming people of all abilities. This class is an 'Introduction' to Altered Art and although it is crammed full of techniques, we shall be covering everything from the basics up :-) The workshop will be running on Thursday 14th November from 10am. Vintage Board Game. Book and box made from a real vintage Monopoly board.
I've been doing a little feathering of the nest here and there. It's been slow going, but I've managed to work my way into the dining room... where I have a wall of frames... that really looked incomplete. So I took a page out of Gina's book and was inspired to finish this project. I know! It's been well over a year! But I did it! And it works so well in there, as I have a whole bird and nest thing happening in that room. I have to admit, that when I tucked it away after Paper Cowgirl last year, I really didn't like it. But I'm happy with it now. Thanks for the inspiration, Gina!

One of the many things I'm working on at the moment is an Altered Book project, with a group of like-minded paper lovers. This is the first time I've tried altered books. I get to work on someone's book for a month, usually with a set theme. This month I've been working on Jenni's book. She has no theme, so its totally up to me what I do with the pages of her Sherlock Holmes detective story book. I decided on a retro theme using vintage sewing patterns, see the image below. I was inspired by a recent project led by Jenni making baskets from paper patterns. I hope Jenni enjoys my "Sherlock Holmes Fashion Investigation" and my weird sense of humour.... Also pictured are some retro pattern magazines I picked up for 50cents at an Opportunity Shop this morning, I can't wait to start chopping them up for book pages and other fantastic paper projects.
~ vintage papers made in Sweden
I have soft spot for old books. I love the smell, the color, the signs of use like a name penciled in or a page marked up. The texture, shape and contrast in this art using old books by South African, Keri Muller is fabulous. via visi mag and Keri's blog, simple intrigue.

Hi there! As promised, here is my other Once Upon A Springtime project. It's a Graphic 45 ATC Book Box and it goes perfectly with the ATC tutorial I posted recently! Here are some photos along with step-by-step instructions on how you can make your own. :) I know I used a lot of different kinds of flowers, but you can substitute any brand or color as you wish. You could even use different papers from the two paper pads I used. That's what I love about papercrafting - you can really make it your own!
