I had this plain t-shirt and wanted something new. I gathered a few old shirts that don't fit to use them for something useful... I came up with this... I cut up 3 different shirts into different sized circles then started pinning where I wanted them. I came up with this and was ready to sew. I used the zig-zag setting on my sewing machine to attach the circles to the shirt. I wanted it to kind of look messy and random and I achieved it by adding x's to a few of the circles. I also used my back step button to sew over it about 3 times on each circle. You can see that I added a bit of elastic on the sleeves to gather it around the top then added trim around the sleeves to add a little something( But it would also be cute plain..) I tried the shirt on and realized why I never wore it... It's a bit low and I need a tank top under. Tank tops are annoying to me and get too hot so I decided to cut the front of one of the shirts I cut up to attach it to the actual shirt so it "appeared" as though I were wearing an undershirt... It made it more comfortable. I then pinned and sewed the "undershirt" onto the shirt. I wanted to hide the stitching so I added the same trim that I had put on my sleeves around the neckline. I like the way it looks with the trim better.... Here in this picture you can see the gathered sleeves... So an old shirt turned new and exciting. Now I have the rest of those cut up shirts for another project (you always want to save scraps! You never know when they will come in handy!!!) Instead of donating old clothes why not try to spruce them up for a cheap new outfit? Happy crafting!

It's shark week - does that excite you, or freak you out a little? Maybe some of both? I was thinking about how our students might feel about sharks this week, so I put together a graph to find out. (Click on the picture for my first freebie, then read on for another!) It's pretty simple, something you could use quickly at the beginning of a shark or ocean unit. Of course, you could follow up by teaching your students about them, and then revisit the graph. How many students do you suppose might feel differently after learning about sharks? Sharks really are scary - to me at least. They're also incredibly cool and amazing - okay, I guess I have to repeat, to me at least. Perhaps that's why I've been busy learning about sharks, and making fun resources to use when learning about them. One of the things that stuck with me is the variety of sizes sharks can be, from dwarf lantern sharks that only grow to 9" long (not scary!) up to whale sharks at 45' long (also not scary, they eat plankton). Of course, the great white, with all it's teeth, and growing to over 20' long is somewhat more intimidating! Sequencing them by size really gives a whole new understanding of shark sizes. Of course, we need to practice actually measuring things ourselves (not real sharks, thank you!). This activity uses fish lengths as a non-standard unit of measure. For slightly older students, I wrote a non-fiction reproducible reader about sharks. To make differentiating easy, there are two versions of the text. For my younger kiddos, I made this patterning center. I clipped the pattern strips onto ribbon, and the kiddos clip on additional pictures to either match... ...or extend the patterns. We follow up with cut and paste versions. Finally, I want to share another freebie with you! This is a very simple reading center, which I like to put in a pocket chart or on a table. My third graders are doing simple machines in science class, which matches up perfectly with the next unit I wanted to do with them! I've been wanting to build castles with a grade, so I figured this would be the perfect class to do it with...we could incorporate simple machines in our draw bridge! I've seen numerous examples of these floating around Pinterest, but most of them use just cardboard tubes of different sizes to create a princess-like castle. I did a little research on castles (because let's be honest...I know very little about castles), and I used various sources from pppst.com to create a handout (I'll have to attach that tomorrow...I left my hard drive at school). On the first day of the project, students partnered up and read about the parts of a castle and then tried to match the name of each part to its picture on the back of the handout. It has taken us approximately two days to put these castles together so far. From here, we will gesso the cardboard (the shiny, printed side of the cereal boxes, not the brown side) and add the texture to the walls. Students will be able to paint medieval scenes on the inside of their walls and they will have to brainstorm how to make their drawbridge work. Finally, we'll make the cones to put on the tops of their towers. This is my castle that I made. I used regular cardboard and paper towel tubes. I found that it was VERY difficult to cut the cardboard using my own scissors and I knew the students wouldn't be able to cut it with their scissors, so I had them all bring in cereal boxes. Each student used one large cereal box to make their castle walls. We cut out the front and back of each box, and then cut those in half. Students cut out the little "teeth" on their walls, and then folded the sides to create a little flap to make it easier to hot glue them to the cardboard. Once glued, they had to trim down their towers if they were too tall to make them a little more proportionate. This is the first time I've let 3rd graders use hot glue guns and it was VERY successful! Some of them were leery of using the glue guns, so I helped them, but everyone else did quite well! We had no burned fingers! Once a student finished constructing his or her castle, they helped others catch up...it was great watching their teamwork today! My cart of castles! Class B still needs one more period to finish constructing all of their castles. I just BARELY had enough paper towel tubes to do this project...I've been stock piling them for a while and I have one grandparent who has faithfully sent me two garbage bags full of them since the beginning of the year. Now, I just need a project to deplete the toilet paper tubes that I have left...

This is a great super, fun and easy tote bag tutorial that you will want to make over and over again! (updated 04/18/2014) Please read entire instructions prior to cutting fabric or starting. What you need is: 1/2 yd of 2 different fabrics 2 yds coordinating webbing 2 pieces batting, thin like warm and natural 15"x 10" -not meant to cover whole bag From these items you want to cut you're fabric into these measurements: 2 pieces batting (thin like warm and natural) 15"length x 10" wide 2 bag pieces 15"length (left to right if using directional) x 20.5"wide (up and down) 2 pocket pieces 15"length x 16.5" wide cut webbing into two 1 yd pieces Now you're ready to start! First fold pocket piece in half and press, then you're going to layer your pieces You should have 2 sets of these sandwich like sets.. Next take one set and pin one of the webbing yards, to make the straps. Starting at the bottom leave about 4" between each strap. do this to the other set, so both look like this.. Now you're going to stitch the strap to all 3 layers, starting at one cut end of webbing, sewing along the edge of the strap. You will stitch pass the pocket and up to where your batting edge ends. (this will allow the fabric to show at the top above the pocket when finished) Pivot your bag with needle down and sew the other edge of the strap back down to where you started. This will tack down both edges of this strap. Repeat this to other side of strap on same side of bag your working on. Repeat to other bag side. Once both are complete you are half way DONE! Now layer the 2 bag sides one on top of each other right sides together. At this point your straps are loose on the inside of the bag, just make sure to keep them out of the way, when you sew. Pin together leaving a 5" opening at the top center. (remember sewn straps are at the bottom of the bag) Stitch 1/2 inch around all 4 sides. Remembering to leave a 5" opening. Now you're going to shape corners of bag and lining. (bit tricky) You're going to open up the corner and press it down so it looks like this. then pin it and measure 2" from the point and about 4" across and sew along that 4". Do this to all 4 corners. Does you're bag look like this? (TIP before you cut the corners I would make sure that the lining fits great, just in case you need to make some adjustments...I'm talking from experience) NOW slowly turn it inside out, and if you're lining sits great, then go ahead and cut the corners. You can now stitch closed the lining (the 5" opening) with a small stitch.. and lastly you're going to top stitch the top of the bag...Remember you're top stitching so make a bigger size stitch, like a 4.0 would be great.. isn't this cute? my friend made this one for her little girl.. even her inside looks so professional.. Now both of these bags used the same pattern, but obviously they turned out a little different..(I think my bag measurements were a little off.. to my defense it was about 7pm and my brain shuts off at 5p...) but they both still look good. so with that said if you bag comes out a little bigger or smaller it will still do it's job and know one will know but you.. Go and make some and send me pictures. I would love to see what you can create! My elephants bag was made from Daiwabo Japan Fabric, Tip Top Elephant Walk grey, lightweight Cotton canvas and zag stripe chevron in pink. Friends bag made from Patty Young Sanctuary line, Aromatherapy sherbet and glass tiles sherbet from lining.. all fabric can be found HERE and batting and webbing can be found at any local fabric shop. I got mine from jo-anns. Our bags finished size (yours could come out slightly different) width 13.5" height 10.5" including handle 16" high depth 4"..

A few years ago we featured this fabulous board and thought it offered a great jumping off point for a collaborative project as well as classroom decoration for the first few weeks of school! "I Am Unique" Puzzle Piece Craftivity We love using the puzzle illustration to show students that each of them, with their different abilities, interests, and skills, have a special and important part to play in the classroom community - i.e. it takes all of the unique puzzle pieces, fit into their unique places, to create a whole picture. As a fun first day of school craftivity, provide each of your new students with a colorful card stock puzzle piece cutout, old magazines, and various graphic art materials, inviting them to use the materials to decorate their puzzle piece with pictures, words, and illustrations that describe who they are, what they like to do, etc. To extend the activity, have students select the three things they'd like to share about themselves with you and their new classmates, expounding a little bit on each one. For example, instead of simply saying, "I like to craft", have them tell you what they like to craft, etc. The best part is, each of the individual puzzle pieces can then be fitted together to create a colorful mural for the classroom! In This Class, You Are A SPECIAL Piece Of The Puzzle! Here's how we would tackle a puzzle bulletin board... Find a puzzle template online (with the appropriate number of pieces) and use the classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the pieces onto background paper. Use a pencil to number the back of each piece, then cut the pieces apart. Once students have decorated their piece, the puzzle should be relatively easy to order and assemble using the numbers on the back. Since your students will be doing most of the decorating, all you'll need is background paper to cover the board, a fun trimmer, and some bulletin board letters to complete the display!
This may seem odd, but I like to do a lot of altered projects and you'd be surprised how cute a rolodex card is as a photo mount or even to cut your own dividers for your rolodex out of cute paper! I hope you enjoy this file. Happy crafting! Click here to download this free Rolodex style card.
