I have made several of these over the Summer at the request of my lovely customers, using various novels and music books, so I thought it was high time I added this option to my mobile collection. This is the more traditional, 4 string type of mobile, it has 4 strings of 3D paper stars which spin and twirl prettily in the slightest breeze. It is approximately 40" from the small hanging ring at the top to the mini 3D paper beads at the bottom, the strings are suspended from a 6" hoop ( or 9 inch with 6 strings, you choose ). Makes a lovely addition to a nursery or any room for that matter. You have the option to choose your book from the options making it a perfect tailor made gift. Based in Austria, Natalia Lubieniecka scours Vienna’s markets for antique objects, fabrics, and anatomical posters that eventually inform and meld into her peculiar sculptures. Whether it be a blush-colored heart enveloped in florals, a supine frog with exposed entrails, or a deceased bird covered in a lace bodice, her fantastical works speak to the fragile relationship between life and death. The sculptor tells Colossal that her interest in organs and bodies began after a visit to Naturhistorische Museum Wien, where she encountered taxidermy of birds, insects, and other animals. More

But luckily there are tons of winter crafts and arts activities to make with kids and have cold winter days amusing. This was originally created for a guest post at Crafting and Creativity! Today's project was inspired by this picture I found on Pinterest. (You can follow me here:) Edited: I want to add this button that My Marbles created: Isn't it awesome? I hope to be able to use it more often: Edited*** This button clock was made by Mason Bee, and is just one of her many beautiful creations! I haven't seen a tutorial to make this particular kind of clock, but using instructions I found across the web, it was easy to adapt for a fabric clock. Materials needed: 1 embroidery hoop (mine was about 7 inches) Sturdy fabric of choice- I used burlap, but you could use anything 12 cute buttons Embroidery Thread to match your buttons Hot glue (optional) Scissors 3/8 in or smaller Clock Movement Kit- about $7 at any craft store, or cheaper with a coupon! Here's how I made mine: First, I cut my burlap to fit my embroidery hoop, leaving enough fabric to stretch it taut on all sides. You may have to double layer your fabric, depending on how thin it is. You need something sturdy, and you don't want anything see-through. I placed it in the hoop and pulled it tight on the front and back. Then, I laid out where I wanted my buttons to go and marked them with a water-soluble pen. Next, I found the center of my button circle and marked it. This is where you will assemble your clock movement kit. Now, mine didn't come with any directions, so I had to do some searching to find out how to put it together. Mine was an Artminds brand, but it is pretty standard. Here's how it goes together: source Take all the clock parts out of the package and disassemble anything that is put together. 1. Cut a small slit in your fabric- enough to push the arm of the big black movement piece together. The rubber washer goes on the back- between the black box and your fabric. 2. Slide brass washer (circle) over the shaft 3. Attach the hex nut (the other larger brass pice)- screw it tight to the fabric 4. Gently but firmly press the hour hand onto the shaft at the 12:00 position. 5. Gently but firmly press the minute hand onto the shaft at the 12:00 position. 6. Gently screw minute hand nut (small brass circle) in place 7. Gently but firmly press your minute hand onto the shaft. Once my movement kit was attached, I hot glued it to the back of the fabric for extra stability. Next, I hot-glued my buttons in place- just a tiny dot. This isn't necessary, but it saves me a lot of time in the next step. I hand-sewed my buttons to the fabric using two strands of embroidery thread. I think I made three or four stitches per button. Just make sure they're on good! All that's left is making it look pretty. Carefully trim the excess fabric away from your hoop. I basically put my scissors flush with the hoop, then cut all the way around. I sealed the ends by drawing a thin line of hot glue across the cut edge. This keeps it secure and keeps it from fraying. That's it- pop a battery into the movement kit and you've got a cute (and functional) clock for your craft room, or anywhere else you need a little cuteness. Can you imagine the possibilities with all the cute buttons out there? I'm linking this up to:

My girlfriend came over to refill my estrogen reserves last week, and brought with her a fantastic craft for us to do together while chatting, laughing, gossiping and catching up after her long vacation. One third of the way through summer vacation with three boys, she knew just what I needed. She brought over a bunch of stuff for us to sit down and make our own button bracelets. So fun! The greatest part was that each of our bracelets turned out differently! Do you want to join us? Let's make some funky Button Bracelets! Materials: Buttons in various sizes (test to be sure your cord will fit into the holes) Round leather or coated cotton cord (1 mm in diameter) Instructions: Arrange your buttons ahead of time to lay out your pattern Begin with a length of cord about 18 inches long (you will adjust this to fit at the end, but cutting it too short will result in frustration and some swearing...trust me, I know). The more knots you intend to make the longer the cord. Fold your cord in half and tie a knot in the looped end, like this: Now, begin threading the cord through your button holes. Criss-cross your cord for the 4 hole buttons like this: The same is possible for the two holed buttons. Bring a cord up through each hole then back down the next hole like this: You might also want to thread your button onto one piece of cord then knot, like this: To finish off your bracelet, just pull the cord through the last button and tie in a square knot. See? You can pull the last button through the loop at the other end to attach to your wrist. Now, go crazy! Try to be random and mix it up, stack some, knot some, criss-cross some, there is no right or wrong way to do this! Get creative, girl! You might end up with something like this: Or simple shell and wood buttons look like this: Or you could go nuts and work in some beads like this: Now, gather some buttons, call up some girl friends, set the kids into the back yard to play, and have some fun! PS (JoAnn's has some bags of fantastic HUGE buttons with HUGE holes for the little ones to get in on the act. It will be a HUGE relief to use these buttons for them. A bloggy friend suggested dipping lengths of yarn in clear nail polish and twisting. Once dry, they will thread easily for the kiddos.)

UK-based embroidery artist Amber Griffiths is riding a wave of anatomical inspiration in her latest designs. Typically inspired by nature, Griffiths tells Colossal that her series kicked off when looking to put a non-traditional spin on the iconic Valentine’s Day heart. “I’m not particularly someone who’s into all the mushy classic love hearts, so I thought the anatomical route would be much more interesting,” Griffiths says. That set off an obsessive exploration of human anatomy through her primary embroidery technique—the punch needle. More
