Along with orienting your new students to the classroom and classroom procedures, the first few days of school provide a great opportunity for some community building exercises. A few years ago we featured this fabulous board and thought it offered a great jumping off point for a collaborative project as well as classroom decoration for the first few weeks of school! "I Am Unique" Puzzle Piece Craftivity We love using the puzzle illustration to show students that each of them, with their different abilities, interests, and skills, have a special and important part to play in the classroom community - i.e. it takes all of the unique puzzle pieces, fit into their unique places, to create a whole picture. As a fun first day of school craftivity, provide each of your new students with a colorful card stock puzzle piece cutout, old magazines, and various graphic art materials, inviting them to use the materials to decorate their puzzle piece with pictures, words, and illustrations that describe who they are, what they like to do, etc. To extend the activity, have students select the three things they'd like to share about themselves with you and their new classmates, expounding a little bit on each one. For example, instead of simply saying, "I like to craft", have them tell you what they like to craft, etc. The best part is, each of the individual puzzle pieces can then be fitted together to create a colorful mural for the classroom! In This Class, You Are A SPECIAL Piece Of The Puzzle! Here's how we would tackle a puzzle bulletin board... Find a puzzle template online (with the appropriate number of pieces) and use the classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the pieces onto background paper. Use a pencil to number the back of each piece, then cut the pieces apart. Once students have decorated their piece, the puzzle should be relatively easy to order and assemble using the numbers on the back. Since your students will be doing most of the decorating, all you'll need is background paper to cover the board, a fun trimmer, and some bulletin board letters to complete the display!
Remember that special moment every day with one of these craft projects.
Photo Source: Heather Martin Celebrate the diversity of your class/school community this MLK Day with a gorgeous hand print mural like this one designed by art teacher, Heather Martin! {Didn't it turn out amazing?!} The collaborative project is sure to foster a sense of teamwork and community among your students and the finished mural offers a powerful visual of acceptance and harmony! Not to mention the display is student-created so it requires little work on your part; simply cover the bulletin board with black background paper, add a complimentary border, and {optional} entitle the display with one of Dr. King's well-known quotes. "The time is always right to do what is right." --Martin Luther King Jr. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." --Martin Luther King Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” --Martin Luther King Jr.
I love this tear art bookmark project because you can basically do the whole thing with recycled materials! At our house we have a box where we put paper scraps from leftover projects, as well as a larger “create box” of materials (like toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, old cereal boxes etc.) I was …

I have been seeing these wonderful ruler growth charts on blogs and Pinterest. The first one I saw was here: http://naptimedecorator.blogspot.com/2011/10/ruler-growth-chart.html Love it! Easy to follow instructions and great pictures! Of course I had to make my own and make it a little bit different. Here is what you need: A 6 foot 10"x1" or 8"x1" board (I used a 10"x1") Printed off large numbers in different fonts. (I made them the size of a printable piece of paper in Word.) Printed off smaller numbers for the ruler part. Stain Clear Sealer Paint pen Pen Start with sanding down the board and the sides: Wipe all the dust off and print off your numbers: Here is a picture of my numbers 1-6, plus the smaller numbers. I only printed the outline of the numbers in order to save ink. Then I measured out where I wanted the board to hang on the wall. I wanted the top of it to be level with the door opening that it was next to, and that ended up being 7 inches off of the floor. It is important to know this from the beginning so you know where to start your measurements and numbers! Check and double check your measurements before you lay anything out on your board. Next I laid out all the big numbers where I wanted them to be on the board: Notice the tape measure laying on the floor next to the board? This is so I could see what height to place the numbers. I made sure they were all straight and then taped them down. Now for the second part of the tutorial: Staining a design onto a piece of wood! After I laid out my design and taped down the pattern, I used a pen to trace the design onto the wood: You need to press really hard, because you want to make an indention of the outline onto the wood. The deeper the indention, the easier the next step will be: Here you can see the number two that was traced onto the wood. You can see where I ripped through the paper at one point and drew on the wood- you want to avoid that if you can! After you get everything outlined, you can start carefully staining in your design: You want to start on the inside of the design- (in my case the numbers) and gently push the stain to the edges: One it gets close to the edge of the design the wood will absorb the stain up the indention. Instead of using a brush with stain, you can also use a stain marker. Just be sure to always start at the inside of your pattern and let the stain soak to the edges or it can bleed past the indention. If you want the stain to be darker, you can go over it with a second or third coat. I didn't want too much contrast, so I left it at one coat. I used a dark cherry colored stain, but any color will work! After the stain dries, you want to seal the board: I used a water based clear satin sealer. I like to use water based whenever I can so that cleanup is much easier. Once that is dry, you can start on the measurements: Remember where you need to start at the bottom of the board based on where you want to place it on the wall. Mine was going to be exactly 7 inches off of the floor, so I was able to start measurements one inch up and then mark every inch with the first foot marker being 5 inches up. I overlapped my markings every time I moved the ruler to keep everything precise: Once the board was marked in inches, I went back and marked where every foot and half foot was. I decided to make the inch marks 3 centimeters long, the half foot mark 4.5 centimeters long and the foot markers 6 centimeters long. I marked them all with a pencil first then used a paint marker to go over the lines: You can buy the paint markers at most craft stores and sometimes Walmart carries them in their craft section. I use them all the time in my murals- a great way to get a nice crisp and steady line! Notice the tip is white when first opened. You will need to prep the marker by pushing down on the tip to get the paint to flow. Do this on a scrap piece of paper or cardboard before using it on your project or you will end up with a little pool of paint on your project. I am missing the pictures where I taped down the smaller numbers, traced them and filled them in with the paint marker. I used the same method as with the big numbers and just placed them center at the end of each foot marker. Here is another picture of the finished project: Next, I added pictures of my sons at each of the different heights. Since my boys range in size from 3' to 6' I was able to fill in the wall. A fun way to look back at how they have grown over the years and also for the younger ones to look forward to getting their pictures added as they get taller! You could also take pictures of different relatives or family friends who are a variety of heights and put their pictures on the wall. I know my boys love looking forward to being as tall as or taller than their Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents!
With a busy toddler, sometimes it can be hard to come up with something fun to make that will keep her interested and, most importantly, learn something once we're done. This kid's craft covered a little bit of construction skills, colors and color-mixing, and creating unique artwork. With a few simple supplies, you can create a cute and colorful wax paper lantern and have a great time! To make a wax paper lantern, you'll need: Wax Paper {any brand should work great} Crayons in multiple colors Craft Sticks {I got mine from CraftProjectIdeas.com} Iron Scrap Paper or Newspaper *Depending on the age of the child, I would highly recommend a bit of adult supervision. There will be the use of an iron, so we don't want any little hands getting burned! Step 1: Cut or tear a piece of wax paper off the roll about 10-12 inches long. Fold and cut the paper in half length-wise. Fold each half in half again width-wise {don't tear it!} so you now have 2 sheets to work with that are each about 5x10-12 with a folded seam. Step 2: Depending on how hard you or your child can color, you can color your own design on one half of the wax paper sheet. My daughter tried, but wasn't getting a very dark image. The darker your coloring, the better it will turn out. Step 2.1: Since we couldn't draw a dark enough image, we did the next best thing: place crayon shavings into separate paper cups. Sprinkle the shavings {not too many} on one side of the wax paper. From a little trial and error, adding too many shavings can make a big mess when melted and will also end up blending all the colors into one. So, use a few and spread them out a little for best results. Teach what colors work together when mixed {like blue + yellow = green}, and what will happen when you mix colors like yellow and purple that will turn a muddy brown. We made a few extra sheets so we could experiment with different colors. Step 3: Fold the wax paper over with the shavings inside. Place on a piece of scrap or newspaper, then cover with another piece of paper. With your iron on medium heat, run it across the paper with a small amount of pressure. This should melt the crayon shavings and fuse the wax paper together. Having the scrap paper will help absorb any crayon that melts out of the wax paper and protects your iron. You can make as many sheets as you'd like, but you only need 4 for this project. Step 4: With a little bit of glue, or using a glue gun, glue the craft sticks together to make a square {as seen in image above}. Make sure all the craft stick frames are completely dry before the next step!! Step 5: Carefully trim your wax paper sheets to about 4x4 inch square {measure your frame to make sure what will fit} and tape the sheet to the inside of the craft stick frames. Step 6: To put the lantern together, start by taping two of the frames together on the inside. Line the frame sides up, and add a few pieces of tape. Add the third frame the same way, then carefully fold them all in to form a cube. Add the fourth frame, and tape both edges so that all the frames are connected. Now your lantern is done! Add a battery powered tea light or nightlight inside and admire your work! With all the flammables involved in this project, I don't recommend putting a candle inside the lantern at all!! Thanks again to CraftProjectIdeas.com for sending us craft sticks to play with!

STORY The Friendies are little cuties that live in children’s rooms, in old boxes full of toys. Most of the time, they look like ordinary toys, but they come to life once the room is empty. The Friendies then leave their box on tiptoe and put the toys scattered around the room back to their usual places. Sometimes, when they feel very tired, the Friendies fall asleep on the bed, not making it back to their box. When you find a Friendy laying on the bed, then you clearly think that it was you who put her there. But if you ever look through the keyhole before you enter the room, you will probably see your Friendy silently walking around, collecting and putting the toys away. Little girl Friendy Candy had the biggest sweet tooth, she loved and even adored all sweets. “Marmalades, toffees, caramel candies, chocolate bars… Yum yum!”, Friendy Candy often thought, her eyes squinting with pleasure. “There is nothing tastier in the world!” But there was a problem: Mother always told her that a lot of sweets are unhealthy, and Candy was usually allowed to get only one small candy, and only after eating the main dish. One candy being too few, she one day decided not to eat the candy that her mother gave her and instead to collect them until the box was full, so she would eat everything at once. A week without eating any sweets was not easy, it seemed to last forever… Friendy Candy bravely managed to fill her box anyway, and it was now time to enjoy this sweet moment. But when she opened the box, to her big surprise, there were no candies in it! Instead, a sweet little Gummy Bear in a cute skirt was looking at her from inside the box. Friendy Candy picked up the Gummy Bear and hugged it to her. Now she knew for sure what exactly she liked even more than candies! These little cuties are great helpers and will be very happy to settle in every children’s room. Your kids are gonna love them! Make a Friendy! It had about twenty sides, which made it appear round. It was three stories high and had a diameter of about 100 feet. The rectangular stage at the front of the theatre was about 43 feet wide and 28 feet deep, and it was raised a few feet off the ground so there was a crawl space underneath. There were trap doors in the floor of the stage and in the Heavens in the roof above the stage for entrances, exits, or special effects. Around the yard and stage were three tiers of galleries. Wealthier patrons could sit in these seats, while the "groundlings" stood in the yard for a penny each. A special tiring room behind the stage provided a place for storage or costume changes. A balcony above the tiring room, behind the stage, provided an acting space, a place for the orchestra, or for more seating. There were two doors on the left and right of the tiring area. In the middle was a large opening with a curtain, which could be drawn or opened as needed. There was no curtain hiding the entire stage. The plays were written so that the players could enter and exit the stage seen by the audience. There was no scenery and props were simple. A flag at the top of the theatre announced plays every day since the Puritans would not allow publicity. A black flag meant a tragedy was being performed, white was a comedy, and red was history. Patrons of the globe were transported by ferry from across the Thames. Shrewd wherrymen ["Elizabethan taxi drivers" according to the tour guide at the Globe] would withhold the price of transport until halfway across, so the passenger had to pay whatever the wherryman asked for. As theatre-goers entered the theatre, they dropped their admission into a box, (therefore we have box offices.) The actors and the audience always interacted. This interactivity was unavoidable because of the audience's rowdy behavior particularly in the groundling areas. For instance, some people would join mock fights. The noise was tremendous. People could drink or eat without paying any attention to what happened on stage. Common refreshments were hazelnuts, beer, water, gingerbread, apples, and oranges, all of which were occasionally thrown at the actors onstage. There are a few theories as to the creation of the Globe Theatre. In 1598, James Burbage's theatre, the Theatre, was in danger because the plot of land it was situated on was at the end of its lease. The landlord threatened to tear the theatre down. To avoid paying a high price to keep the theatre, he had his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage, dismantle the Theatre piece by piece and transport it across the Thames to a small lot on the south bank in Southwark. They renamed the "new" theatre the Globe. There is another story that goes something like this. The Theatre was situated in the heart of London, where the theatre were subject to closures because of outbreaks of the plague and the Puritans disapproving of theatre in the city. These were detrimental to the livelihood of the theatre, so the Lord Chamberlain's Men disassembled the theatre in 1598 and moved it over to Bankside. However, the theatre did not belong to the company when they performed this feat. It had merely been leased to them. When the owner found out about this (for he was not in London at the time,) he filed a lawsuit. He lost. [I have been told by many people that this story is not true, but I read it somewhere, I wouldn't just make it up. If you want my opinion, better to rely on the first story. Or go to one of the sites on my links page and take their word for it. I don't want anyone getting in trouble because of me. The Globe began its first season in 1599 with a production of As You Like It, and continued with works by Shakespeare, Jonson, Beaumont, Fletcher, and others. By the sharing system that theatrical companies commonly used during the 17th century, the Burbage family got half of the interest, and the other half was split between five actor-sharers: Shakespeare, Will Kempe, Thomas Pope, Augustine Phillips, and John Hemminges. These men were players of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, a popular group of the time whose home theatre was the Globe. In 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, a canon went off to mark the entrance of the king, and a stray spark set the thatch roof aflame. In one hour, the theatre was destroyed. No one died in the conflagration. Reconstruction of the Globe began quickly, and it was finished by June 1614. Performances continued until 1642, when the Puritans, who found theatre vulgar and intolerable, shut all theatres down in and around London. Two years later, the Globe was leveled to make way for tenement dwellings. © Copyright – Paper Models, Inc. – All Rights Reserved

STORY Tonight is a very special night for all ballet lovers. This is the premiere evening of a new ballet performance starring young ballerina Melanie, and the audience is gathering cheerfully at the theater. As the lights dim in the auditorium, silence falls over the audience, and the air is buzzing with excitement! The curtain slowly opens and the music starts playing. Under the dazzling light of the spotlights, Melanie steps lightly onto the stage and starts to dance around. The audience is enthralled. Melanie’s movements are so precise, charming and light that at times it looks as if she is not dancing at all, but rather hovering over the stage. At her side, Graceful Kitty is dancing in time to the melody, making the same movements as the young ballerina. At the end of their splendid performance, Melanie an Graceful Kitty make a curtsy to the audience and both freeze in anticipation. The audience bursts into thunderous applause, cheering and rising to their feet to give them a standing ovation. A smile blossoms on Melanie’s lips. She and Graceful Kitty are now true ‘prima ballerinas’! The Friendies are little cuties that live in children’s rooms, in old boxes full of toys. These little cuties are great helpers and will be very happy to settle in every children’s room. Your kids are gonna love them! Make a Friendy! Friendy Melanie with Graceful Kitty is the eighth doll from the “AradiyaToys Friendies” collection. … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … . I'm getting ready for winter and Halloween by making my son some hats of his favorite characters. I started with Winnie the Pooh. :D I usually don't work with bulky yarns but I found the perfect color for Winnie the Pooh in that weight. It's Loops & Threads Charisma in Yellow. Not too light or too orangey! I made this hat to fit my almost 2 year old and he has a head circumference of 19". There's more information on sizing and gauge below. I also added a little guide at the end of the pattern so you can make it in a different size. Note I've only made this pattern once and it hasn't been tested. This pattern isn't as detailed or photo heavy as my other ones. But if I keep writing up patterns this way, I think I'd be able to offer more free patterns. :) Materials & Tools: Loops & Threads Charisma in Yellow Loops & Threads Charisma in True Red I/5.5mm hook Loops & Threads Impeccable in Chocolate Brown for the nose & eyebrows E/3.5mm hook Pair of black 18mm domed sew on eyes or buttons Polyfil Yarn needle Abbreviations & Stitches: ch - chain dc - double crochet sc - single crochet sc2tog - single crochet 2 stitches together sl st - slip stitch sk - skip st(s) - stitch(es) R# - Round/Row Measurements & Sizing: Head circumference: 19" Finished size: 17" Height: 7" It fits my 2 year old. Ears (Make 2): With yellow yarn and I/5.5mm hook, R1: 7 dc into magic ring. (7 sts) R2: 2 dc around. (14 sts) R3: Sc around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the hat. Weave in the ends. Snout: With yellow yarn and I/5.5mm hook, R1: 7 dc into magic ring. (7 sts) R2: 2 dc around. (14 sts) R3: *2 dc, dc* to end. (21 sts) R4: *2 dc, dc 2* to end. (28 sts) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff with polyfil. Sew onto the hat centered just above the red edging. Nose: With brown yarn and E/3.5mm hook, R1: Ch 13, sk ch, sc 12 sts. (12 sts) R2: Sc to end. R3: Sc2tog at the beginning and end of the row. (10 sts) R4: Sc2tog at the beginning and end of the row. (8 sts) R5: Sc2tog at the beginning and end of the row. (6 sts) R6: Sc2tog at the beginning and end of the row. (4 sts) R7: Sc2tog at the beginning and end of the row. (2 sts) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew on the top of the snout. Eyes: Sew on the eyes about 2-3 stitches away from the snout. Eyebrows: With brown yarn and yarn needle, stitch on the eyebrows a couple rounds above the eyes. Sizing Guide: If you'd like to make this in a different size, here is a mini guide. If you don't have measurements, you can use ones from these sizing charts: Woolly Wormhead's Sizing Information Bevs Country Cottage's Size Chart Tot Toppers' Head Sizing Chart 1. Take the head measurement and minus 1 or 2 inches for negative ease. Example: 19" - 2" = 17" 2. Start working the pattern and after a few rounds, measure the stitches per inch and multiple it by the finished measurement. Example: 2.5 stitches per inch x 17" = 42.5 3. Figure out how many increase rounds you need to reach that number. Depending on the number, you can round the number up or down. Example: 10 (starting number) x 4 increase rounds = 40 Since my number is already two inches negative ease, I decided to add another increase round to add 2 more stitches to get to 42. 4. Now work even in double crochet until you reach just about the height you want and leave some space to do the red single crochet edging after. Example: I did 5 rounds to get to 6 3/4 inches. 5. Next the earflaps! This isn't exact-- it's just some guesswork here. Decide on how many stitches you need for each earflap and the spacing between them. They're positioned to be closer to the back of the hat with more stitches in the front than the back. 6. Now you can add the edging and other details. You may need to size up or down the eyes, ears, snout, and nose. If you make this hat, I'd love to see it! Please add it on Ravelry or post photos in the comments. Made in 9/14/14. © Adorably Kawaii. Grapes Decor Stamp While similar in function to stamps you used as a child - IOD stamps are magical (no kidding!). They have the power to transform a piece of junk found on the side of the road to a show-stopping piece of home decor that you’ll have to convince your husband you didn’t spend your entire monthly budget on. For reals, they are that good. And DIY home decor is just the tip of the creative iceberg. IOD stamps can be used in food art and DIY lifestyle projects, like taking a boring pair of jeans and stamping a beautiful bohemian design down the pant leg. For more information on how to use the stamps - visit here Product Information: HOW TO PREP IOD STAMPS Did you just get your very first set of IOD stamps - beyond exciting, right?!? But before you can get your hands dirty, you need to condition your stamps. You only need to do this once and then your stamps will be set for life. Start by removing the acrylic sheet attached to the stamping side of the design, while leaving the stamps attached to their backing sheet. Using a fine grit sand block scuff or rough up the stamping surface. Lightly sand in one direction and then rotate the craft stamp 90 degrees and sand lightly in a different direction. This helps the mediums stay put, and not bead (which some types, like ceramics glazes, tend to do). It also will give a cleaner impression.
I had some left over scrap yarn and wanted to knit up something quick for a 1 year old birthday party I was invited to at the last minute. This is what I came up with. Update on different sizes: I was asked if I had any larger sizes made for this pattern and I did quickly make up a size adjustment. To see how the actual shrug turns out, check out nainis’s project page for these two adorable shrugs: Shrugs & Kisses for Olive Lazy~daisy, hearts & kisses Little Girl’s Shrug Using the same gauge Modifications for 3 year old size: Cast on 81 stitches and work in rib (1x1) for 3 rows just like the pattern. Row 4 (Set-up on WS): Slip 1, K2, P11, place marker, P12, place marker, P29, place marker, P12, place marker, P11, K3. Continue Rows 5 & 6 just like in the pattern, and knit for at least 12-15 more times. Hopefully, by this point you’ll have enough raglan increases to measure around 5-6 inches (from the collar to the armpit area). Knit the next 3 rows in 1x1 Rib for the sleeve portion only just like the pattern. Knit the rest of the shrug just like the pattern. I would knit more rows to give more length once you get past the sleeves. Probably 7-10 more rows instead of the 4-5 than what the pattern says. Note: I’m not sure how many stitches you’ll have once you get to the bottom, but make sure you have an ODD number or your 1x1 Rib won’t match up. If you’re off, just either add a stitch or do a k2tog. I would do this right after the sleeves, so count your stitches then and add or k2tog under one of the sleeves so that it’s hidden.

The Friendies then leave their box on tiptoe and put the toys scattered around the room back to their usual places. Hard as it is to believe, Friendy Emily’s hair was once white. One fine day she flew by a rainbow and decided to sit on it to rest a little bit. As soon as she touched the rainbow, her hair took on bright colors. Emily loved her new colorful hair so much that now, she never misses the opportunity to sit on a rainbow and watch it color her hair in new shades. Don’t forget to look at the sky after the rain, there is a chance that the rainbow has not disappeared yet and that you will see a little girl with bright colorful hair sitting on it! These little cuties are great helpers and will be very happy to settle in every children’s room. Your kids are gonna love them! Make a Friendy!
