He looked at me puzzled and said, "no es a eagle!" I chuckled and said, it looks like an eagle (with its opened wings) but it's a bat." He looked at me and said, "ok mommy." Then walked over to the baseball and swung the black bat at it!! I laughed and laughed and said, "it's not a baseball bat it's an animal bat." I was not quite sure how to explain that one! Makes sense, since the only "bat" he knew was a baseball bat!} :) Once we talked about all the Bb items we made a Bb craft. I drew a big B on a piece of card stock and had E glue buttons on the B. The next day we reviewed Bb and went out and blew bubbles. E loves bubbles! Theme: This week we talked about all the different types of homes. Homes for animals and for people. We made the Shape House. This is a fun activity to review colors and shapes! We read these books: Who Lives Here is about animal homes. My House/Mi Casa discusses all the rooms and parts of a home, as well as, the different types of homes people live in. Bible: Memory Verse of the Month: "in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth." Genesis 1:1 Memory Verse Song: "God is Creator" by Seeds Family Worship We are continuing to talk about that God is Creator. This week we focused on the first day of creation. On day one of creation God said, "Let there be light,"and there was light. We listened to the memory verse song as E placed the white tissue squares on the black card stock paper. {In advanced I precut the tissue paper squares and used a utility (Exacto) knife to cute squares on the black card stock paper.} once all the tissue squares were on the paper we shined the flash light through the holes. You can also hold the card stock paper up to a light or window. Gross Motor: I bought a roll of bubble wrap at the dollar store, brought it home and rolled it out on the living room floor. E loved this activity! He bounced, ran up and down, rolled around on it and tried to pop the bubbles. I found "The Bounce Song", by Kids Tv 123 on UTube. We played the song over and over as he bounced and bopped! He seriously played with it all week long! I eventually tapped it down with masking tape so it wouldn't bunch up. This was a perfect letter Bb activity. Sensory: We ended the week making a batch of finger paint. This recipe was VERY easy and QUICK! I found this recipe on Pinterest by Easie Peasie: 3 tbs sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup corn starch 2 cups water Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until mixture thickens. This week for Family Home Evening I turned to "The Friend" for inspiration. The message from the First Presidency was by President Monson. (You can find it here) I read some of the message and we discussed what it means to let your light shine. We decided it means to be a good example and follow Jesus's example. For the activity part I created this little worksheet that I could easily print for each of my kids. Its based off the page that goes right along with this message. In the large center star they can draw or write how they can be a good example, help others, or any way they can let their light shine. The little stars around have scriptures about Jesus Christ's example. As they read them they can color the star. We each picked a star and looked up the verses and shared it with each other. If you have older kids it would be fun to do a scripture chase and see who can find it first. You can download a copy of this worksheet for your own FHE here. Here is a quick and easy Family Home Evening lesson you can whip up in a snap. We live far away from Grandparents so we going to try to facetime them once a month and have an FHE together. We did this one last week and it was a success! (This would also be a fun and easy Primary or Nursery lesson.) Supplies: 1-2 pieces of yellow construction paper 1 piece of orange construction paper scissors marker tape Prep Work: Cut strips out of the yellow paper. Cut a big circle out of the orange paper. 3. On the orange circle, write these words from the scripture Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine!" Lesson Time! With your family, read Matthew 5:16 (You can even work on memorizing it if you want!) Tape up the orange circle on the wall. Hand each person 1 or 2 yellow paper strips and have them each think of ways they can let their light shine, and be a good example of Christ to others. Then one by one, tape the yellow strips on the wall all around the orange circle: 5. Ask your children what they see now. Answer: The SUN! Talk about how when we do good things and try to be a good example, it shines like the sun. Other people will notice it and will be blessed as we live as our Heavenly Father and Savior want us to. Hunky Dory is a two-colour brioche knit with a very sloppy fit and fabulous voluminous sleeves. It’s knitted from the top down in the round and comes in sizes S through to XXL. It’s knitted on 12mm needles so although it sounds as though it could be a heavy knit it’s actually incredibly light and squishy. The pattern includes videos on how to set up the brioche, the brioche increases and decreases (at the cuff). If you’ve never done two colour brioche before, it really isn’t difficult and you can certainly give it a first go with this jumper but it’s probably not for a total beginner! The jumper is a very loose fit. We’d really recommend checking out the different size measurements if you want a closer fitting garment or are considering sizing up. It takes time (and practice!) to develop such fine motor mastery. The creators of Kids Learning Station provide an excellent series of scissor skill worksheets where your preschoolers can practice cutting everything from straight and curved lines to more challenging operations like zig zags and waves. Not only are these practice sheets great for repetition, you can also increase their difficulty level by printing them on paper of different weights (e.g. regular printer paper, 60 lb. cardstock, 100 lb. cardstock, etc.). Be sure to check out Kids Learning Station and their sister site, All Kids Network, for these and other wonderful learning aids! If your students are new to the art of cutting, these worksheets may seem a bit advanced. Here are a few tips for helping your students work their way up! Proper Grip. Begin by demonstrating how to properly grip the scissors. Invite your students to place their thumb in the upper hole, their middle and ring fingers in the lower hole, and let their index finger rest lightly on the outside of the handle to act as a stabilizer. Scissors should be held in the student’s dominant hand. Snipping. Have your students start small. Provide them with 1? strips of paper and invite them to practice snipping through the paper in just one cut. This will help them learn the motion needed for extended cutting exercises. Fringing. Fringing is another great way to help students learn the quick open-close motion required to cut. Don’t have them worry about uniformity, just the movement. Line & Shape Cutting. After they’ve mastered snipping and fringing, graduate your students to cutting worksheets like those found at Kid Learning Station. Begin with straight and slightly curved lines, then move to zig zag and wavy lines, and finally, have your students begin cutting shapes. Developing the dexterity, coordination, and control needed to perform challenging cutting tasks takes time and patience, but is such a benefit to your preschoolers. Happy cutting! P.S.
