Liberty style hat and scarf for 30 cm Corolle style doll Scarf with a hole for easy donning for little hands
On one of my shopping adventures last summer I was hit by a stroke of creativity...I came across a couple of Groovy Girl dolls and realized that this might be my solution to Sophia's constant wardrobe changes. I thought if she could change a doll's clothing she might stay in the same outfit for an entire day! Wishful thinking perhaps, but when I looked at the clothes that come with the dolls I realized the potential for me to make her an entire wardrobe for her doll. Time sometimes gets the best of me and I didn't end up making clothes for Sophia's doll for her birthday, however last week was my niece's birthday and Sophia's doll clothes fit her doll perfectly so a birthday gift idea was created. I spent a while searching through my fabric for the perfect doll clothes fabric and I am so thrilled by the outcome. 3 dresses, 3 skirts, 2 shirts, a purse and a boa (every doll needs to accessorize). As you can see I bought a couple of dolls to give Sophia enough clothes for her doll, but that same clothing gave me the pattern pieces to create the outfits that they are wearing in this picture. A great looking bunch of girls if you ask me. The Groovy Girl clothes are very basic in terms of sewing technique, since the clothes do not have to go in the washing machine a simple overcast seam around the pattern piece is all that is required to prevent fraying, I simply folded up this overcast stitching and did my seam for the outfit. Ribbon and velcro are necessities for these clothes, and I could see sewing on some buttons or other notions to really individualize each piece. Perhaps even a little embroidery would be needed on special pieces. If anyone needs a new "little" outfit I would be happy to duplicate these Groovy Girl clothes patterns, these outfits were a lot of fun to create. Wow, I can't believe the response to this posting. I guess I am not the only one that wanted to make clothes for groovy girls. I have created a couple of patterns and posted them below (the patterns did not scan perfectly but you can still see the outline) so people can download them, instead of me keeping up with emails For each design there is a solid line, finished size and a 1/4" dotted line around, for cutting. You will need basic sewing knowledge to make these and you might have to play around with piecing pieces together, to ensure perfect fit. However, none of them are that difficult and with enough different pieces of scrap fabric your groovy girl could have completely different looks using only one pattern. Play around with embellishments as well, nothing adds to an outfit like some sparkle or ribbon. (The following patterns need to be printed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper.) Page 1 - Skirt and Top Page 2 & 3 - One Strap Dress and Scarf This pattern requires you to cut out three pieces for the top, sew together as I indicated on the pattern and then attach to the skirt (shown on the second page). I also placed a pattern for a scarf on the page with the skirt. To make it I stated you should cut out 2 pieces of fabric, sew together with right sides together,on the long sides and one short end, turn right side out and stich the last end closed. If you are not using two different fabrics for the top and bottom of the scarf, just double the width of the scarf, fold it in half and you only have 3 sides to sew together. Page 4 - Long Dress and Purse I have placed a simple square shape on this pattern to use for a purse. I tend to make things more difficut than they need to be so I always line the little purses I make. If you want your groovy girl to have a matching purse with all her outfits just simply cut two squares out, sew right sides together and hand stitch a ribbon at the sides for a strap. I think once you make one you will see how easy they are to make and you can play with different shapes or have two straps instead of one. As I said, these patterns are just my own creations for home use. You may have to slightly adjust them to work. Please print them all on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. I hope you enjoy making these as much as I did, and your little girls love dressing up their dolls. Happy sewing!

Remember the Merchant and Mills mantra? 'Sew cloth together patiently and with care for your industry will be rewarded beyond all measure.' Well, it's true. My recent forays into sewing with wool and silk have convinced me of that. And yet... sometimes the exceptions prove the rule, and here's another exception: dolls' clothes. There are moments when dolls need new outfits in a hurry... and this babygro can be made from an old T-shirt during a toddler naptime. There are lots of very lovely, and more sophisticated doll clothes patterns out there, but not many for teeny-tiny dolls like this one, so I've included a template which will fit a 12" doll. I've made it using various knits, mostly harvested from the children's old clothes, and it seems quite forgiving in most fabrics. Here's what to do... Cut one babygro front (on the fold) and two babygro backs using this template. The back pieces have sticking-out-bits at the centre where they will overlap, and which I will call 'placket extensions' until I can come up with a more elegant or accurate description. Stitch together the two back pieces - with right sides together and 1/4 inch seam allowances - starting the the base of the placket extensions, and pivoting to stitch down the centre back. Press the seam to one side. This will naturally lead to the placket extension on one side folding back on itself, and the other side extending over it - perhaps the picture below will help to explain this a bit better. It might be worth pinning them together at this stage to keep it all lying nicely. Place the front and back pieces with right sides together, and mark the centre of the top (the blue pin in the photo below). Mark one inch either side (the two red pins). Stitch front and back together along the top seams, with 1/4" seam allowances, leaving an opening for the neck between your markers. Press the seam open, then fold and stitch a narrow hem at the ends of each sleeve (it's easier to do this before the next step, which will be stitching the side seams). Now match front to back, right sides together, and stitch the side seams and inner leg seams, with the same 1/4" seam allowances as before. Add a press-on snap at the back of the neck. The snap will catch the folded upper edge and folded-over placket, and hold them in place. You could even add another snap or two. Or buttons. (This is a felted wool version with more carefully finished edges.) And it's done. Here it is in real life, as it were... Happy sewing!

Here is a page of pattern pieces to make a dress in long or short length for an 18 inch fabric or vinyl doll, such as Gotz, or American Girl, or Corolle. Be sure to measure your doll's waist and chest to make sure the pattern will fit with enough extra for movement. For the skirt cut a piece of fabric 30 inches (75cm) wide by 10 inches (25cm) long. You may use the pattern for personal use but not commercially. If you need help with sewing techniques for dolls and costumes I recommend consulting my book. Article and Pattern © Susan Kramer The grid on the pattern is 1 square equals 1 inch (2.5cm). The pattern pieces include one quarter inch seam allowance.

I wanted to share this great simple pattern. I recreated this, in doll size, from a woman's blouse pattern. What I love about it most is that it is SIMPLE! This is the first version that I made, This is lined which (to me) makes the neckline easier to manage. This is the second version, also lined. This is the latest version I made for our newest doll, Naija. I made the neckline a little higher and am happy with the results. Here is the same top on a 13" Corolle doll. On this slightly smaller doll this top makes a cute mini dress. This is the same pattern made from an up-cycled tee. This is not lined since turning the tee fabric is a little easier. Be sure to print this actual size on 8.5" x 11". For all you AG fans I am working on an 18" version. I ALMOST FORGOT! In all my doll clothes I use a presser foot seam. Which is simply I use the edge of the presser foot for my seam line. NOTE: This pattern is free for personal use. If you share it online please keep the link to this blog attached. Thanks.
