Los continentes se separan unos de otros a través de fronteras geográficas, que pueden ser mares, montes, océanos, estrechos o líneas imaginarias. Estas delimitaciones son una creación humana que a lo largo de los siglos han ido modificándose.

Añadir leyenda En 1915 el alemán Alfred Wegener publicó el libro "El origen de los continentes y océanos" en el que desarrollo la teoría conocida como "deriva continental" que ya había adelantado tres años antes. Según esta teoría, los continentes estuvieron unidos en algún momento (hace unos 300 millones de años) formando un único continente: Pangea. Más tarde, hace unos 200 millones de años, la placa que sustentaba este único continente se partió en dos durante la Era Primaria: Laurasia y Gondwana. Millones de años más tarde, estas dos grandes placas se partieron en otras formando las placas que observamos en la actualidad. Estas placas han estado y están en movimiento, alejándose, acercándose hasta llegar a chocar. Wegener basó su teoría en la observación de la forma de los continente (como pueden encajar unos en otros, por ejemplo América del Sur y África), la existencia de formas geológicas iguales en continentes diferentes, la existencia de fósiles vegetales idénticos en diversos continentes, el magnetismo de las rocas.
