Description In selecting both pioneering and contemporary pieces, Atkinson also explores the underlying current of craft as a balancing, humanistic force in the face of an ever-more efficiency-driven, virtual world. The installation highlights the evolution of the craft field as it transitions into a new phase at the hands of contemporary artists, showcasing the activist values, optimism, and uninhibited approach of today’s young artists, which in some way echoes the communal spirit and ideology of the pioneers of the American Studio Craft Movement in their heyday. The artworks range from the 1930s through today and span numerous media. New acquisitions such as Mary Jackson’s Vase with Handle, Josh Simpson’s Megaplanet, and Akio Takamori’s Green Mountain and Ochre Landscape make their debut in the gallery while seminal works including Wendell Castle’s Ghost Clock, Karen LaMonte’s Reclining Dress Impression with Drapery, Albert Paley’s Portal Gates, and Kim Schmahmann’s Bureau of Bureaucracy return to view. Bedlah, Baubles and Beads by Dawn Devine ~ Davina "Bedlah, Baubles, and Beads" is a book about designing and crafting the elaborate bra and belt sets worn by contemporary belly dancers. Also known as "dance oriental" and "raks sharki," belly dancing has numerous sub-styles that are defined not only by their movement vocabulary, but also by their distinctive costuming. The first part of the book provides a conceptual framework by starting with a history of this costuming style and its origins here in the United States. From there, it concentrates on introducing the reader to design principles, methods, and techniques for developing figure-flattering styles. The second part presents the materials, tools, and processes for putting together an elaborately decorated bra and belt set. Step-by-step illustrations for applying beads, a fabric shopping guide, and directions for constructing the bra and belt bases are all illustrated with descriptive diagrams to aid the reader. Finally, the book finishes with a portfolio of styles and ideas for expanding the performance wardrobe. From skirts to accessories, these chapters introduce the essential garments that transform the bra and belt into a complete costume. Detailed topics include: • Step-by-step illustrations of beading techniques, including back stitch, couching, tambour beading, scatter beading, and more. • Directions for making high-quality bedlah, from concept to finished costume. • Techniques for developing beading patterns using clip art sources and transforming images into dynamic designs. • Fitting and covering bras and belts. An extensive bibliography is included.

Ian Edwards - The Calling - Original Signed Bronze Sculpure Dimensions: 120 x 55 x 55 cm Edition of 12 Edwards’ practice expresses the power and determination of human endeavour. He draws inspiration from natural forces, with his powerful masculine figures often bearing the surface texture of time enduring landscapes. Edwards uses this external inspiration to explore very internal themes of fortitude and self-discovery. Edwards’ sensitive hand as a sculptor incorporates classical ideas about the sculpting process. In both Self Made Man and Creation of Self, a figure carves himself out of a mass of rock, reminiscent of Michelangelo's idea of seeing a form within a piece of marble and ’setting him free'. This is deeply metaphorical, reflecting timeless themes of purity, effort and self-belief. Poetic concepts such as these run throughout Edwards’ practice, with each piece subtly informed through mythological storytelling, creation beliefs and philosophical thinking. Edwards served a five-year apprenticeship at the world renowned G&H Studios where he learned his craft from the ground up, fine-tuning his ability to portray form and movement. He has publically sited commissions and has become popular with private collectors throughout Europe, America and Asia.
Elizabeth Metcalfe considers how a movement that began in the late nineteenth century is still relevant today and highlights how its distinctive designs for fabrics, wallpapers and furniture continue to inspire interiors.
Despite being a craft dating back over 30,000 years, fiber work only started to get sculpturally experimental in a serious way in the 1960s and 70s.
Born in Lima, Peru in 1980, Ana Teresa Barboza lives and works in her native city. She studied painting in the Faculty of Art at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PCUP). Using embroidery, yarn, and wool, she creates landscapes and other imagery that exists in the space between tapestry and sculpture. Emulating the flow of waves or grass, each piece breaks out of its embroidery hoop and tumbles down the wall upon which it is being displayed.

Canadian artist Mathieu Laca crafts oil paintings that use texture and abstractions that toy with the conventions of portraiture. Whether it’s famous subjects or the vague everyman or everywoman, the artist packs both meticulous, odd flair and personality into each of the paintings. He's given this treatment to anyone from Henry David Thoreau and Albert Einstein to historical arts figures like Vincent Van Gogh.
It seemed befitting that an educational center for traditional arts and crafts be situated next to Seolleung, a king's tomb. The tomb houses the remains of the Joseon Kingdom's 9th ruler, King Seongjong, and his second wife Jeonghyeonwanghu. Han Sang-soo, traditional Korean embroiderer was there Tuesday as a teacher overseeing students enrolled in an eight-week program. But Han, 81, is the country’s Important Intangible Cultural Property in Korean embroidery, known for her singular match of colors and almost modern sewing that makes her work seem alive. "That's because we use a lot of inner stitching to portray the highs and lows," she explained in an interview at the center in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul. Han said she wants to keep the interview short as she wants to concentrate on her future plans. But once she starts talking, her passion and energy were evident; even as she sped through her 60 plus years as an embroiderer, the interview lasted for nearly two hours. What caught the eyes as she spoke were her pretty and long-nailed fingers, and her hands that were surprisingly soft. "Needlework doesn't ruin your hands," said Han. "These nails are to help me arrange a line or a fold when I sew," said Han.

From her studio in Canberra, Australian artist Sally Blake (previously) twists and plaits copper wire into baskets and sculptures evocative of the organic matter ubiquitous around the planet. Seed pods, sprawling networks of bulbous pockets and thin, sinuous veins, and mammalian bronchial systems emerge from the malleable material, and through intricately woven motifs, Blake accentuates the tension between delicacy and resilience inherent to natural life. “Visualisation of the natural laws and patterning that hold people in relationship with Earth, as well as the consequences of these unravelling, is my focus,” she tells Colossal. Salvaged Book Abstract Wall Sculpture, Contemporary Installation Made to Order MADE TO ORDER Turnaround Time is typically 4-6 weeks depending on the waitlist. This sculpture was made from reclaimed books that would have otherwise been thrown away. But look! They can have a second life as something utterly captivating. What could be better than having your favorite stories immortalized forever and hanging on your wall? What if the words that helped define and shape your life could be forever felt with their essence locked into a sculpture? When you install this artwork in your home people will gravitate towards it. They'll want to touch it, to make sure it is real. No one has ever seen anything like it. A beautiful, custom wooden crate is crafted around the sculpture and it is suspended within for safe travel to your desired destination. The entire shipment will have a scheduled delivery and it weighs 150-250 pounds, depending on size (the sculpture alone will weigh 100-150 pounds). These are both massively heavy and delicate. Never was there such a fun paradox! Unboxing and hanging suggestions will be sent after purchase and most customers hang themselves with 2-3 friends to assist with a simple drill and screws.
