La escultura bizantina no tuvo el mismo desarrollo que otras artes como la pintura y el mosaico. La importancia de la escultura bizantina radica en la iconografía y su influencia occidental. Antes de la lucha iconoclasta hubo escultura de bulto redondo en el imperio, y de gran belleza, pero después de esta cruenta guerra sólo podemos hablar de escultura de relieve realizada en marfil, que si bien al principio tuvieron un fin cívico-político, posteriormente fue religioso. I EDAD DE ORO Relieves en sarcófagos, siguiendo modelos paleocristianos de la escuela de Rávena. Se realizan en marfil. Ya vimos en el Arte Paleocristiano el ejemplo del "Sarcófago de Isacio", en el que aparecen representados las imagenes de los Reyes Magos en una iconografía que veremos repetida en los mosaicos de San Vital y en San Apollinaire el Nuevo. Otros relieves decoran muebles como “La Cátedra del Obispo Maximiano” (marfil, 545-553) Museo Arzobispal de Rávena. Representa imagenes de la vida de José y sus hermanos, que se pone en paralelo a la historia de Jesús. Por la técnica empleada se atribuye su realización a artesanos orientales. Originalmente constaba de 39 paneles, pero se han perdido algunos. Se cree que fue un regalo de Justiniano al obispo de Rávena. En el panel frontal, bajo el monograma de Maximiano, aparece San Juan Bautista y a su lado los evangelistas. El Bautista sostiene un medallón con la talla del Cordero Místico y los evangelistas llevan sus libros. El panel delantero se decora con racimos de uvas que simbolizan el Árbol de la Vida, y pavos reales que simbolizan el cielo e imagenes de santos. Todo ello enmarca las escenas de la vida de Jesús, mientras que los paneles laterales desarrollan la historia de José. "Políptico Barberini" (Marfil, s. VI, Constantinopla), Museo de Louvre. Mide 34,2 x 26,8 x 2,8 cm. Representa el triunfo de Zenón, Anastasio o Justiniano. En el centro, el emperador domina un brioso corcel como signo de fuerza y buen gobierno. Clava la lanza en el suelo celebrando una victoria, mientras un extranjero (caracterizado con el gorro frigio) toca con una mano el arma como signo de acatamiento y con la otra aclama al emperador. Una niké corona al basileus, mientras la Abundancia le toca el pie. Desde la izquierda un soldado trae otra niké (trae la victoria) al monarca, imagen que se repetiría especularmente en el panel derecho, hoy perdido. En el panel inferior, más extranjeros de todo el orbe traen todo tipo de productos como regalo o tributo. En el panel superior, una imagen en un clípeo de Cristo sostenida por ángeles: el Mesías, representado a la manera alejandrina (joven y apolíneo), bendice al emperador y su imperio con el gesto bizantino, mientras sostiene un bastón que termina en una cruz potenzada (signo de Cristo y la difusión de su fe por las cuatro direcciones del mundo). A los lados de Cristo, dentro del clípeo, se representa el sol y la luna: toda la escena es eterna, atemporal, ocurre "por los siglos de los siglos". "Busto de la Emperatriz Teodora", s. VI, Milán. Muestra herencia de la escultura romana, aunque mucho más austera en su realización. No se sabe con seguridad que se trate de la emperatriz esposa de Justiniano, aunque la mayoría de los especialistas así lo consideran. ÉPOCA ICONOCLASTA En las zonas donde no llega la iconoclastia se hacen escenas de corte “Cristo coronando a Romano III y Eudoxia” (s. XI) II EDAD DE ORO La escultura no alcanzará nunca la grandeza que había tenido en Roma y ni siquiera recurre al bulto redondo. Probablemente la iconoclastia influyo en ello, lo cierto es que suelen refugiarse en relieves de pequeño tamaño con organizaciones parecidas a las de la cultura pagana. Se hacen sobre todo Vírgenes, la Teotokos (sentada o de pie con el niño en brazos), Orante, Deesis (con San Juan Bautista),... “Déesis” o "Tríptico Harbaville", (marfil, s. X) Museo de Louvre. Representa a Cristo en majestad flanqueado por la Virgen María y por San Juan Bautista, se consideraba entonces la "oración perfecta", ya que el único intercesor ante Dios: Cristo, recibía a su vez la plegaria de su Madre y de su primo Juan, ambos considerados seres humanos intachables. hoja central, panel inferior: Apóstoles Santiago, Juan, Pedro, Pablo y Andrés. Hoja izquierda, panel superior: San Teodoro el recluta, San Teodoro el Comandante Hoja izquierda, panel inferior: San Eustratio y San Aretas. En los tondos, San Mercurio y Santo Tomas Apóstol. Hoja media, panel superior: Cristo, su madre y San Juan Bautista Hoja central, panel inferior: Apóstoles Santiago, Juan, Pedro, Pablo y Andrés. Hoja derecha, panel superior: San Jorge y San Eustaquio Hoja derecha, panel inferior: San Demetrio y San Procopio. En los tondos, San Felipe Apóstol y San Pantaleón. El tríptico, que era una forma común de representar en la pintura sobre madera bizantina, se generaliza en la época medieval en occidente siendo la base de desarrollo de los retablos de altar, donde adquirirán enormes dimensiones. Son tres hojas unidas que cierran las dos del extremo sobre la tabla central que es de mayor tamaño, en forma de libro. Lo estudiaremos más profundamente en el Románico. Las representaciones de la Virgen María adquieren gran importancia, encontramos diferentes maneras de representarla y cada una recibe un nombre particular: Estas representaciones de la virgen, las encontramos tanto en muros y techos, como en objetos de devoción particular o Iconos: VIRGEN BLOCHERNITISSA: Manto sobre la cabeza y los brazos extendidos hacia arriba, indicando su misión de intercesora y suplicante. VIRGEN TEOTOKOS: Representada junto con Jesús niño el cual tiene en sus manos el rollo de la ley. VIRGEN HODIGITRIA: Sola y de pié, como conductora de almas. Tiene uno de los pies adelantado en actitud de empezar a caminar. VIRGEN KIRIOTISSA: La virgen representada como un trono de sabiduría y Jesús niño sentado en sus piernas. La virgen lo señala como camino de salvación. VIRGEN GLICOFILUSA: Virgen acariciando a Jesús niño o dándole un regalo. VIRGEN GALACTOTROFUSA: La virgen amamantando a Jesús niño. "Virgen Teotokos" Las artes figurativas bizantinas abandonan el concepto realista-naturalista del arte romano para preocuparse mas de lo simbolico y expresivo, en este sentido no tiene importancia ni la correccion del dibujo ni la proporcion adecuada, que varia,para ganar en fuerza comunicativa como en esta Virgen con el Niño,en la que es impresionante la Majestad que trasciende.
