Students work in partners to combine like terms in this collaborative "Around the Clock" activity. *Students are not required to know integers to complete this activity. All simplified expressions have positive values only. (*For a version for integers: Combining Like Terms Partner Scavenger Hunt.) The activity is self-checking, providing students with instant feedback. It includes a printable version, a drag-and-drop digital version in GOOGLE Slides, student answer sheets and an answer key. How the activity works: Each partner gets a clock with 12 unique expressions. Each partner's clock problems are different but the answers are the same, encouraging collaboration and teamwork. If one student gets stuck, the other can help. If student answers differ, they work together to figure out the correct answer before moving on to the next problem. Students paste their START slip at 12 o'clock, simplify its expression and find the answer on the top of another slip. They then paste this next slip at 1 o'clock and combine like terms to simplify this problem. Each answer students find will lead to the next problem to simplify. Students complete all 12 problems until they get back to 12 o'clock. If all problems have been simplified correctly, the answer from the problem at 11 o'clock will be at the top of their START slip. *This activity can also be given to individual students to complete. To use it this way, give each student one of the clocks. The activity is still self-checking. For the GOOGLE Slides version, make a copy of the activity and delete the second clock before sending to students. See more Partner Scavenger Hunts here. A few weeks ago, I shared a free template I created for using 2 Truths and a Lie in class. Specifically, I shared examples of using the practice structure
Hello all! I feel like it has been forever since I blogged, but I do have a plan this year to blog AT LEAST three times a week. I made a promise to myself at the beginning of the summer that I will finish up my Masters and take a two month break from doing anything work related. It was soooo nice but now I am feeling the stress of coming back to work. Last school year, I was the Algebra 1 Math Interventionist and this year, they are changing my title to "Math Instructional Coach." I am very excited about this new journey and I am really looking forward to it! We had GREAT success on our Algebra 1 STAAR scores last year and we saw an increase in our scores from 72% to 87%. The past school year was the first school year that the Algebra team used interactive notebooks and we are all in agreement to use them again this year due to our huge success! There have been some changes in our scope and sequence from our district curriculum coordinator. For example, the team decided to teach solving equations and solving inequalities together. I am still planning to use the following Simplifying Expressions foldable and activity that I blogged about here. We are "chunking" this foldable since it lands on a pep rally day and we will complete a matching activity just over combining like terms. The following pages will be new this year to adjust to teaching equations and inequalities together. I absolutely LOVE the following pages over solving multi-step equations. A co-worker of mine has used the following acronym for over 3 years now in her classroom and she feels that this is the only thing that has really stuck with her students. After the multi-step equations foldable, we will complete a "truth or lie" activity on Google Slides. As a team, we are trying to incorporate more writing into our Algebra 1 classes. Students will find the cards that are "lies" and give an explanation. I have blogged about error analysis activities before (Click Here) and I absolutely love the results that I receive back from students. Our district uses Schoology and you are able to easily input the Google Slides link into Schoology for students to submit their work. After reviewing solving multi-step equations, we are planning to go over solving equations and inequalities with variables on both sides. Currently, I am planning to use an activity that I did last year where students solved 12 problems that had answers as either 0, 1, All Real Numbers, or No Solution. I found this activity to be extremely helpful in clearing up any student misunderstandings. Has anyone else taught equations and inequalities together? This will be brand new to the Algebra 1 team this year and I am curious as to any pros or cons. I am also wearing this shirt any time we review solving equations... From my experience, students are visual learners and they remember any of my shirts! lol Click here if you want one too! You can find several other blog posts over solving equations that I previously wrote about here: Previous Post #1 Previous Post #2 Previous Post #3 Here are some of the files that I wrote about in this post. Help your students do "S'more" practice with combining like terms with this interactive activity. Students find and sort two graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallow to combine variables and then constants like terms. Students begin with a single graham cracker. They combine like variables, and look for the chocolate bar that matches. Students then combine constants and look for a matching marshmallow. A value is given for the variable, so students will also practice solving an expression. This final answer will match a second graham cracker for a completed s'more. This activity can be used in small groups and a student activity sheet is provided for accountabiltiy and formative assessment. Print multiple to a page to save printer ink and paper. Three in a Row and Tic-Tac-Toe Combining Like Terms with the Distributive Property Electronic Game In this self checking combining like terms and distributive property resource, students practice using the distributive property and like terms to simplify algebraic expressions in one of two familiar games. This game is great for independent practice and this activity is also great for stations. Students can choose to take turns attempting to connect three in the "Connect Four" inspired game, or ge t three in a row on the tic-tac-toe board. In both games, students set up the board, solve the problems on the student work space provided or a whiteboard and turn the chip over to reveal the correct answer. WATCH THE VIDEO PREVIEW TO SEE HOW THIS RESOURCE WORKS! How to play: 1. First, after the game has been shared with students, the first player chooses which question he/she will answer. The player solves on a white-board or on scratch paper. (Both students should solve for additional practice.) 2. Next, the student checks the answer by turning deleting the question. If his answer is correct, the question chip is replaced with his player chip. If incorrect, the question chip remains on the board by clicking the "undo" button. 3. Following his turn, the other student takes his turn. Game-play continues until one of the players obtains three in a row or until the board is full. 4. Finally, to replay, go to the next board to play a new game. *Challenge possibility: After playing through the game, have the students delete the question cards and attempt to create a problem that results in the given answer. Combining Like Terms: 2-page "doodle notes" - When students color or doodle in math class, it activates both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. There are proven benefits of this cross-lateral brain activity: - new learning - relaxation (less math anxiety) - visual connections - better memory & retention of the content! **This resource is also available in a DISCOUNTED bundle: Expressions & Equations Bundle Students fill in the sheets, answer the questions, and color, doodle or embellish. Then, they can use it as a study guide later on. Content includes: - Vocabulary (term, coefficient, variable, constant) - How to identify like terms - Combining like terms - Writing in standard form - Simplifying with multiple steps (and distributing first) Check out the preview for more detail about this item and the research behind it. Visual note taking strategies like sketch notes or doodle notes are based on dual coding theory. When we can blend the text input with graphic/visual input, the student brain processes the information differently and can more easily convert the new learning into long-term memory. This strategy also integrates the left and right hemispheres of the brain to increase focus, learning, and retention!
