Taken in 1944 by a German photographer billeted to Auschwitz-Birkenau in southern occupied Poland, these images are the only known record of scores of Jewish families.
The striking images include a mechanic loading of a 500-pound bomb on an American aircraft and a wounded US gunner being hauled from an aircraft after suffering serious mid-flight injuries.
