1970 fiber art "Rainforest" large framed mixed media Larou Morris lichen moss crochet knit abstract forest olive green mustard brown white Signed art dated 1970 titled "Rainforest" by Larou Morris, embodies Northwest forests, mossy branches, earthy, woody shades. A perfect example of late 60's and early 70's fiber arts. This piece is very large and heavy. The frame has been chipped a bit, but it's solid. Otherwise in very good condition, colors of wool are rich. The colors look like natural dye hues, I have experience with this, and it seems very possible. Measurements coming today. Best wishes!

These colorful lichens are Red Fruited Pixie Cups (Cladonia pleurota), found at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, NC. Based on online herbaria records, this species is rare in the Piedmont with most NC records being from higher elevations in the mountains. Piedmont records include collections from unusual habitats such as granitic flatrocks and from a rare Piedmont bog community. These were growing on a cooler north-facing slope under Mountain Laurel. Although the red of the apothecia may appear to be oversaturated, they really are very intensely scarlet. DOF was achieved by focus stacking 8-9 images. Since this may be a vulnerable disjunct population, I've only marked a generic location for the Natural Area on the map.

Lichens are found in all continents and climates with the most diverse colours and shapes. They are composite organisms formed by a fungus and one or several photosynthetic partners that can be unicellular green algae or cyanobacteria. Although unoticed to most people, lichens have often been used as sources of natural dyes, in traditional medicine and occasionally as food.
Tree Lichen This lichen has attached itself to a tree, in front of my house. As I was driving home, after an afternoon thunderstorm, I looked at the trees and they were all bright colors of green and seafoam green. They stood out as if showing the world their colors. This art takes the green colors, which represents life, and captures it for others to enjoy. The textures of the lichen against the grains of the tree allow this abstract art to be a focal point of interest. Shot in Arkansas the striking details captured here, with shades ranging from browns, to greens, to seafoam green to purple, bring interest to what might appear to be a boring old tree. Yet, it's quite the opposite - it's very interesting! The statement piece, titled Tree Lichen, can be grouped with other pieces of art, or it can stand on it's own offering intrigue as you stare at the details of the growing lichen. The decor draws you into nature and it’s unique pattern.

Seen on Mt Rainier's Green Lake Trail. I think it is liverwort, but I will never learn my moss, lichen, and liverwort botany. I suspect the red spots are the spore capsules. But I could be wrong, who knows. [later note: I was wrong! It's not liverwort, but lungwort lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria, I think]
