I don't like to use up much time in class explaining things. I just don't. I would rather a mad frenzy than a bunch of yawns. I find it tricky to gets kids warmed up to the art classroom at the beginning of the year. At the grand opening of the Painting Center this year, we began work on a 100 Color Challenge. My hope is that by working with a partner in this color exploration my students will discover new ways to create colors and use these in their paintings throughout the year. So far they are having a blast!
This month's painting, The Autumn by Alphonse Mucha, is a perfect palette as we slide out of summer and right into fall. Don't you think? Unlike past challenge palettes, which usually featured a bunch of different colors, this month's challenge painting has colors in a fairly narrow range, focusing mostly on shades of orange and yellow. The browns and tans you see all come from those two colors, so these would be a great base for your own color schemes. Stay on the medium to light side for these to better match the source painting. To keep things interesting, there are touches of red and green in The Autumn, too. Out of all the swatches I pulled, the red is the darkest shade, so use that as a guide for your own work and go with darker reds. If you're following the distribution of color in the painting, use that darker red only sparingly. As for the greens, there are a few different shades - the two I picked were my favorites. Behind the oranges and yellows, green would be used the third-most, and range from very light sage greens to a darker forest green. But like red, there are touches of green everywhere, but they are just touches, so use them purposefully. I hope this helps you create your challenge pieces this month!
This month's challenge piece comes from Edward Julius Detmold, and I love the reminder that spring is right around the corner, don't you? This month, you want to focus most of your attention on shades of cream and coral, as those are the most prominent colors in the painting. And there are a lot of shades of coral to work with, too, from pale and toned down, to bolder and more saturated. The creamy parchment background has a little variation, but not too much, and tends to take a more muted, grayish cast than pure, bright cream. If you're not familiar, coral comes from a mixture of red and orange. In this case, it's definitely more red than orange, and again, the saturation varies depending on the shade. This is good news for you, since you may or may not like coral (until a few years ago, I didn't), so there are some options here to play with if it's not a color you feel totally comfortable using. Beyond that, we also have shades of green, from olive to sage, and touches of a reddish purple. That red-orange/green/red-purple combination is called a split complementary relationship in color theory, so it's naturally appealing to our eyes. This combination works because it's balanced. Overall, I'm really drawn in by this month's color palette because we have a variation of values here, from pale to slightly dark. Which means you've got a lot of range to play with. Tell me, how do you feel about it?
