Have you ever heard of a three marker challenge? I'm not sure where the concept originated, but my daughter is ALL about the three marker color challenges lately. Master color harmony with color theory, simplified for you to easily understand and apply in your artwork.
These projects began as a balanced, asymmetrical design using nonrepresentational geometric and organic shapes. Once the students from Port Huron Northern High School created their original design, they transferred it to a larger piece of paper four times to create a symmetrical design. From there the students painted each square using complementary, split complementary, analagous, and monochromatic color schemes. This project allowed the students to see how colors react with each other and made it easier for them to make educated color choices in the compositions that came later in the semester.

Color Wheel Project! an acrylic painting project. This project revolves around the element of art, COLOR. Discussing color theory and previous acrylic painting experience is suggested. In the ZIP: -PowerPoint & PDF or entire presentation describing the project, step-by-steps and break-downs -PNG of blank color wheel I use to have the students practice their designs on -examples of the project with different ideas Materials needed: -acrylic paint -brushes -circular tool -ruler -painters tape Notes for teachers: When drawing the color wheel make sure you use a large circular tool on a large sheet of watercolor paper or painting surface. we used a piece of 12x12" watercolor paper and the outside of a circular tool. when drawing the lines we made a mark every 4" on each side of the paper and connected the marks across the paper. you should be left with 12 slices. Make sure the students label the colors around the color wheel because they will go out of order. when we start painting we start with the primary colors and tape off the slice with painters tape. often the tape will rip the paper so we dab the tape on our pants to make it less sticky before we put it on the paper. when painting we do the background first and work our way from dark to light values. I let the students clean up their painting with paint pens, gel pens, etc. this makes them feel better when making mistakes.

I am linking up with Fourth Grade Frolics for Monday Made It. This year I am going with a bird theme in my room. It just kind of happened. I already had a great picture I bought last year at my school's art auction. Then I happened upon these, and that's all she wrote! I have a small space above some of my cabinets in my room. Over the years I have tried to put decorative items on the soffit, but to no avail. It was just too small of a distance from cabinet to ceiling and nothing looked right, until now. Yay! I found these at Kirklands and they were the perfect size. I then saw these bird houses at Hobby Lobby. Again, just the right size. Now I was happy. :) I bought the houses and some paint and this is what happened: I am going to snip the string off the small houses, but they came in handy as I was painting them. I am heading up to my room to add them to my decor. Once my room is put together I will snap some photos and post them. Of course I am thinking of bird things to do with my little sweeties once school starts. I saw this on Pinterest and immediately knew I would be doing something like this. I then found some free bird clipart on TpT and made this. It is part of my upcoming bird pack I am working on. If you would like a copy click HERE. I also made a PowerPoint presentation for one of my classes last week. It goes with the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. I plan on using it on my interactive whiteboard to check comprehension after I read the story to my little learners. They will be able to choose an answer, touch it, and the correct answer will stay on the screen. I would love any feedback if you choose to view it and/or use it with your class. The Day the Crayons Quit - Revised from lolaragan Thanks for reading! Have a great day. :)

This is a project I love to do with the 3rd graders. Their drawing all turn out so unique and fun. First, we talk about what rhythm in art is. Rhythm is like a visual beat in a picture, created by lines, colors, shapes and space. Rhythm can be made by repeating certain elements of art. Here is a good handout about rhythm. Here is another handout about rhythmic line designs. The students each drew their own line drawing showing … Read more... →
