"All American Diner" ©2011 St.Hilaire Nelson My hubcap project is finally complete! In addition to the old hubcap that Ken from Landfill Art sent me, I also purchased vintage silverware on eBay to further the diner feel. I also repurposed some old Scrabble tiles and much of the papers used in the collage are found papers. The gingham blue and white background was inspired by the uniforms of the actresses in the film "The Waitress" which is one of my all time favorites and was behind much of the inspiration on the project. I sent Ken from Landfill Art a photo of my piece this week and told him it was on the way and his response was "Elizabeth, your art project is just super!" That made me feel great, since he's already got an amazing gallery of hubcaps on his website. My husband had to come to the rescue when it came to drilling holes in both the hubcap and the silverware. My skills with power tools are lacking, I made it through three spoons, but then the drill bit started jumping around and I could not get any more to work. Doug broke several bits drilling through the knife blades, he informed me that they are stainless steel and quite resilient! You can see the whole gallery of in-progress images on my Facebook Fan Page photo album. Doug is also the photographer of all my artwork, 2-D and 3-D, I'd never have such a nice presentation without his help. He shot this photo on a nice black background so as to highlight the shiny silver. My mother was in town while I worked on this, she was the one who suggested I polish the silver so that it would look better!

Sarah Bridgland received a BFA from University of Brighton in 2004 and an MFA from Royal College of Art in 2006. Her diminutive paper creations inhabit the territory between sculpture and collage. Delicately fashioned out of second-hand ephemera and fragments of her own printed media, her work creates spaces where the real and the imagined co-exist, where fact and fiction collide. Each piece is a myriad of textures, shapes and lettering, reflecting her interest in the formal concerns of the Russian avant-garde and Constructivism. Bridgland is fascinated by the marriage of forms and her work celebrates this. Playful in approach, it explores the endless permutations of the cut out as a miniature type of reality. Recalling the mobile paper engineering of children’s pop-up books and toy theatres it exploits the cut-out’s potential to create a narrative, make-believe world, where Bridgland employs each piece as if it were an actor or a prop in a play. Adopting a formal language, she organizes space by balancing the effects of different typefaces and graphics, textures and colours, to create a kind of three-dimensional drawing in which snippets of imagery and information invite the viewer to make their own associations, imaginary conversations between the juxtaposed forms. Her work has been collected internationally and exhibited in New York and Miami as well as in London.

Second graders just finished a self-portrait collage lesson where we discovered the artist Giuseppi Arcimboldo. Arcimboldo was known for his painted portraits of people made up of objects such as books, flowers, vegetables, and other plants. We began our exploration of the artist through playing a game with the Smart board where the students could practice the concept of collaging a human portrait using various vegetables. Then, the students were on their way cutting images from family and garden magazines to use in their portrait collage. They turned out to be so unique! It was a funny lesson that had us all giggling all throughout art class! Here is a look of some that are on display in the main hallway! They sure are getting a lot of attention from the teachers here at BES.... everyone thinks they are so creative!
This is one of those keeper projects! The students always ask about it and seem to really enjoy it. I found this project a few years back and not sure what site it was even on. I've seen other blogs show it too. I do it with 4th grade and we focus on shapes, line and texture. I tell the kids that we want people to get hungry looking at these! Pop art of course- a little Clas Oldenberg:http://unamericanaincucina.com/wordpress2/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/dualburger.jpg always does the trick. Then we view several picture of burgers from all the fast food places and some homemade looking ones too! Students can hardly wait to get going and I love this one too!

Miss Oetken's blueberry pie, cheeseburger with the works and a club sandwich with olive (modeled the sandwich after Claes Oldenburg soft sculpture of a sandwich very much like this) 2nd grade reviewed the large scale food sculptures of Claes Oldenburg. We compared and discussed which ones were soft sculptures and which ones were hard sculptures of the different food sculptures. We also reviewed that all were very large scale sculptures. Then we brainstormed what kinds of food we could make. We went through clay techniques and procedure. Next time after they're fired, we're going to paint them and then glue them to a small white paper plate to display our yummy foods! Here are a few examples from last year! cheeseburger sausage and pepperoni pizza slice cupcake with sprinkles bowl of cherries, bananas and ice cream, fruit bowl:grapesw, strawberries and a banana Eggs, bacon and sausage ice cream cone Here's a hotdog with ketchup and mustard birthday cake with cherry taco with all kinds of fixins
