This "Matisse Cutouts Collage" is a fun and easy activity to do with someone who has Alzheimer's!
Our theme this week was "Our Five Senses" and we focused on the letter B and the shape circle. We read this week: Ferdinand by Munro Leaf Paddington by Mark Brown Paddington and the Busy Bee Carnival by Mark Brown The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Stellaluna by Janelle Cannon Our question of the week was "What is something that you are really good at?" For our theme of the week, we talked a lot about our senses, what they help us do and why we need them. We made texture collages: This week is full of some of my favorite activities from the year, these texture collages being one of them. I love how each one is different, and the kids are so proud of the texture choices that they make. AND they look amazing on the wall. We tasted sweet, salty and sour things, and the kids had to vote on their favorite taste. (They think it's awesome when they get to eat things as part of a project.) We tested their sense of smells with this project where I asked them to describe the things that they were smelling. I used perfume, shampoo, chocolate syrup, pickle juice, toothpaste and (the most tricky) water. Out on our schools nature trail we talked about the different sounds that we could hear. We did this at various points of our walk, close to the school, by the parking lot and deeper in the woods. Lastly we did another activity with the sense of touch. I set up my table with different texture objects. I used flour, rice, oatmeal, sand and a scrubbing sponge. As the students felt each thing, I asked them to describe what they were feeling. It was hard to get them away from just telling them what the items were and to use describing words, but we got there in the end. For our shape of the week, the kids practiced drawing circles with this cool worksheet of circles and another with squares and circles. We also worked on recognizing circles out of other shapes. We talked a lot about things that are circles. We sang the song "This is a circle, this is a circle. How can you tell? How can you tell? It goes round and round, No end can be found, It's a circle, it's a circle." -Found Here For our letter activities, we used our handwriting sheet for the letter B, the sheet that helps work on letter recognition, both were mentioned in the "All About Me" post. The students also wrote in their journals for the letter B. We turned B's into Bees! After we read Ferdinand we all made our own bees. This was a great way for the kids to practice their cutting skills. I love how each child's bee is different. Another project that we did (another one of my favorites all year) is the Boat Builder activity. I love it because I give the students the materials and the end result is something completely their own. Each child got a piece of white paper, a square of brown paper, a skinny black rectangle, scissors, a glue stick and crayons with the instruction of make me a boat however you want to. (They love when I say that). If I get "I don't know how..." or " I can't do it.." We go back a few steps and talk about boats.. what do they look like, where do we find them, what do they do, and then the creative juices start flowing. Here's the end results! Love it! For our Alphabet wall we made butterflies with coffee filters and water color paint. After the children painted their coffee filters and they dried I used small pipe cleaners to turn them into butterflies! And with the B addition, our wall now looks like... Our list for words beginning with B's was very impressive. Here it is! As a side note, teachers always need to be flexible, and as such, it was in the best interest of the flow of the classroom to switch two centers, the library and dramatic play center. And I'm always telling the kids to make sure that they turn off the water faucet after getting a drink or washing their hands. I tell them to "Save the water for the fishes, so I painted a mural for above the sink to remind them. Up next week: The letter C, Triangles and "Our Feelings".

Earlier last week, fellow Rockin' Arts Mom Kristen from Art History Mom shared a really neat way to introduce young children to the artwork of Henri Matisse. I was so intrigued by her post that I did a shortened version of her lesson with my 2 1/2 year old son. Wow. I was so pleasantly surprised at how Chuck responded. He loved looking at the artwork, counting the figures, and finding different colors and shapes. Since Matisse's collages are so colorful and graphic looking, we then tried making our own Matisse inspired artwork at home. Kids Make Matisse Inspired Collages (This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support.) Aren't they beautiful? Now little did I know, Kristen (from Art History Mom) also had a similar idea in mind. She ended up making these lovely Playdough and Construction Paper Collages with her son. I think that using play dough to make collages is such a cool idea, so definitely check out her activity too! Materials Needed to Make Matisse Inspired Collages Construction Paper Scissors (Adult and Kid-friendly scissors) Glue (Glue Sticks and Elmer's Glue) Let's Make Matisse Inspired Collages! 1. I first did Art History Mom's Henri Matisse Lesson with Chuck. Then, we looked at some of Matisse's other collages online. (Note: If you're a book lover, you could also read one of these Matisse books for Kids.) 2. Then, I explained that we were going to make our own collages just like Matisse. So, we pulled out some construction paper and cut out shapes. I cut out the more complicated ones to resemble some of the shapes found in Matisse's artwork. 3. Then we glued our shapes on. (Chuck said this collage was supposed to be a bumble bee. Can you see the resemblance?) Once our artwork dried, we had some lovely Matisse-inspired artwork of our own. I enjoyed this activity because we got to talk about art, math (counting, shapes, and spatial relations), and colors. Chuck seemed to enjoy the activity because he got to use scissors (which always ups the coolness factor of any project) and glue (which he enjoyed wiping everywhere.) Let me know if you try this activity out with your kids! I think they'll have fun (and learn some things too.) (Side note: I learned about Matisse's personal history too... it was super inspiring.) Sarah Bridgland received a BFA from University of Brighton in 2004 and an MFA from Royal College of Art in 2006. Her diminutive paper creations inhabit the territory between sculpture and collage. Delicately fashioned out of second-hand ephemera and fragments of her own printed media, her work creates spaces where the real and the imagined co-exist, where fact and fiction collide. Each piece is a myriad of textures, shapes and lettering, reflecting her interest in the formal concerns of the Russian avant-garde and Constructivism. Bridgland is fascinated by the marriage of forms and her work celebrates this. Playful in approach, it explores the endless permutations of the cut out as a miniature type of reality. Recalling the mobile paper engineering of children’s pop-up books and toy theatres it exploits the cut-out’s potential to create a narrative, make-believe world, where Bridgland employs each piece as if it were an actor or a prop in a play. Adopting a formal language, she organizes space by balancing the effects of different typefaces and graphics, textures and colours, to create a kind of three-dimensional drawing in which snippets of imagery and information invite the viewer to make their own associations, imaginary conversations between the juxtaposed forms. Her work has been collected internationally and exhibited in New York and Miami as well as in London.

My students were invited to create a large piece of art for the front window of our local art store called The Artery. The Mona Lisa seemed appropriate, so we made her using the following steps. 1. I divided a 8x10" drawing of Mona Lisa into 24 rectangles and gave each student one of the small rectangles. 2. The students drew a 4x4 grid onto their small rectangle piece of the Mona Lisa drawing, and a 4x4 grid onto their white 9x12" construction paper. 3. By using the grid method, the students drew their piece of the Mona Lisa onto their 9x12" paper, then traced drawing with black marker, erased grid lines, and colored shaped with colored pencils. 4. For interest, students were told to make their drawings "mostly" warm or cool colors. Each student was given a small rectangle piece after the drawing below was cut into 24 rectangles. Then the student drew a small 4x4 grid on his/her piece. Then drew a 4x4 grid on 9x12" paper. Then enlarged their original piece by drawing on the grid. And colored. She looked like this before pieces were mounted on black background and hung in the window. Soon..........I'll go stand out in the rain and get a picture of the final installation, hopefully. (No idea why I didn't take a pic of it after we hung it up in the window?)
