We drove down to Bisbee on Veterans Day. Got there kind of late and poked around for a bit. Then had lunch at the Bisbee Grill and poked around a little more before driving back. Bisbee was founded in the 1880's as a mining town, and has suffered all the viscissitudes (and booms) that entails. In 1917 over 1,100 IWW members (or anyone suspected to be) were run out of town in the infamous Bisbee Deportation. In 1975 Phelps Dodge bailed out of mining in Bisbee and the local economy essentially imploded. It was a disaster for most residents, but the crash in real estate prices made it arractive to artists and anyone else with a lot of imagination and little cash. Modern Bisbee is, well, quirky. The best t-shirt I saw while we were there was "Keep Bisbee Weird." Amen. Adjusted as needed with Picasa. (_B113117.ORF)

Old Cochise County Courthouse in Tombstone, Arizona. Photo by Russell Lee, 1940. Though Tombstone's most famous lawman, Virgil Earp, was long gone before the courthouse was built, it was called "home” to other interesting police officers, including Sheriff John Slaughter, who is credited with clearing Cochise county of outlaws, and the controversial Deputy Sheriff Burt Alford, who rode both sides of the fence of the law. Like other popular mining settlements, when Tombstone's mining operations began to shut down, its population headed elsewhere. By 1929, Cochise County held a vote to move the county seat to Bisbee. Tombstone lost and in no time, plans were made to shut down the building. By 1931, the last door in the building closed and the courthouse was abandoned. All useable objects were removed to the new county courthouse or sold at public auction. Empty and neglected, the once proud courthouse languished under the desert sun until the 1940’s when investors decided it would make a fine hotel. Though initial preparations and dismantling were made, the venture fell through, and once again the old courthouse was silent. Vintage photo restored by Kathy Weiser-Alexander.

Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County - Late afternoon, a view from a subdivision at the south end of Sierra Vista looking towards the Huachuca Mountains. Later I drove on to Miller Canyon but made it only half way up the primitive road till I had to turn back. Three days of monsoon rains off and on can really be quite a Jekyll and Hyde impression of the southern parts of Arizona. More on this area: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huachuca_Mountains

Bisbee Arizona offers a great place to spend the day on a walking tour. The art community dearly love their little town and enjoy sharing it with tourists. Visit the Queen Mine and take the tour, sample some chocolate made directly from the cacao bean, climb the many sets of stairs or wind your way through the narrow passage ways. We enjoyed our whole food meal at the High Desert Market (twice) and after a full day said to ourselves "we could so easily live here!"
I had wanted to visit Bisbee, AZ for years. So, my husband and I decided to take a road trip to Bisbee for our 28th wedding anniversary.
