porcelain and sterling silver round dangle earrings / minimalist / simple / contemporary / modern / handmade These dangle earrings are handmade by me from porcelain clay and sterling silver. I’ve applied a green celadon translucent porcelain glaze to the front of the earrings and left the backs unglazed. Porcelain is such a special material: strong, yet delicate, and—if prepared thinly enough—even translucent. Compared to other types of clay, porcelain clay is much more expensive and difficult to work with, but it can be oh so beautiful! It stands alone unglazed—pure and minimalistic—but is, as well, the perfect canvas for the translucent porcelain glazes which I use on the glazed pieces I create. Because porcelain is such a special material, I use only 925 sterling silver for all of the metal components (ear wires, posts, jump rings, crimp beads, and clasps) of my jewelry. Size: The diameter of the porcelain “discs” is approximately 3 centimeters. The total earring height, including the earwire, is approximately 7.5 centimeters. Packaging, shipping, and gift wrapping: I ship all jewelry in small paper gift boxes. If your purchase is a gift, please let me know and I will be happy to gift wrap it and include a special note. Working with porcelain: I began working with porcelain clay about four years ago on the potter’s wheel, making bowls and other objects; more recently, I’ve begun hand building jewelry out of porcelain clay. The process of creating a piece is long, including at least two kiln firings. During the first firing (to 900C/1650F), called the “bisque firing”, the porcelain clay vitrifies to the point at which it can be optimally glazed. During the second and (in some cases) third firings (to 1220C/2230F), the clay becomes fully vitrified. I fire to 900°C/1650°F for the first firing and to 1220°C/2230°F for subsequent firings. Lots can go wrong at various points in the process of creating porcelain pieces. It is super delicate before it has been kiln fired, but even after that things often do go wrong, such as pieces cracking during the firings and glaze fusing to the kiln floor. While frustrating, that makes it even more satisfying when a piece turns out as one had hoped! And once a piece has been fired, it is extremely hard and dense. That is not to say that it is unbreakable. When dropped on a tile floor, for example, the floor may be the victor. :-) A brief history of porcelain: Porcelain has a long and fascinating history. It was developed, first, in ancient China and brought to Europe by Marco Polo in the 14th Century. Referred to then as “white gold”, it was extremely expensive and a symbol of wealth and power for the European, Asian, and African monarch collectors of porcelain objects. Many of these objects came from Jingdezhen, China, which is located near kaolin clay deposits on Gaolin mountain. Porcelain from Jingdezhen was transported all over the world via the Great Silk Road and the Ceramic Sea routes. In addition to being an important trade commodity, it was an object of cultural exchange. Many museums have excellent examples of centuries-old porcelain objects. " Today's post is inspired by nature, and organic texture. I am focussing on texture this month; my friend Cooky Schock and I are doing a collaborative year long exchange on our shared blog at Coast 2 Coast Creative. And natural textures are my absolute favorite. Mother Nature was truly an inspired artist when she created marvels like sea urchins, tree bark, and seed pods! Oh seed pods... Eucalyptus pods from San Diego. I use these frequently, one of my fav motifs. And such different designs, such diversity! They remind me of Medieval quatrefoils. Ocean and sea themed found objects in my studio. Plant and pod pieces gathered in my studio. SO for this Freeform Friday I decided to make some molds. Positive and negative; and share some of my organic inspirations. These type of elements have been used to make impressions since early man was texturing clay pots. (Makes the pots less slippery when wet...) No one can fuss about copying, since we are all inspired by similar items. You can't copyright a peach pit! The trick is using them in your own creative way... Polymer texture plates pulled from the original objects. When cured these can be texture press plates as is - a "negative" of the original. I will use them in both earthenware clay and polymer. L to R: peach pit, acorn cap, star anise, magnolia pod, poppy pod. Ocean pieces and their "negative" polymer pieces. The sea urchin had to be taped back together for the picture... When I make molds of my hand carved ceramic pieces, I cast them in plaster. That process ruins the original, as it is forcibly taken from the mold when set. For more fragile objects I have started using various brands of RTV. This "room temperature vulcanizing" mold material is so fabulous! ( I have used Micro Mark's and Alley Goop) Simply mix equal parts, press, set aside. Fifteen minutes or so - there you are! I cast my cured polymer pieces to have a flexible version of my new texture vocabulary. With the brain coral and seed pod shown above - I used the RTV on the polymer "negative" - resulting in a RTV "positive" that replicated the item's direct texture. Pressed in design? Raised up design? I can do either... And for one more positive image... I used black polymer to make positive stamps from these three RTV molds. The ideas I am having of that star anise pod! ( far right) pressed into clay, glaze pooling in the design... yummy. And poppy pod earrings? Sweet! Many of my fellow artists at AJE are also inspired by organic textures.
