Horror films, true crime documentaries, and a towering, freshly grilled burger are all “beautiful” in their own way, but perhaps not universally appealing. So it’s not surprising that some artists would choose to create works that stimulate us precisely by avoiding conventions.
The surface is burnished and glazed, with silver leaf added. The wonderful coloring you see is from the natural properties of the clay, fire and smoke. The gemmy Dioptase specimen hangs from a wood disc on braided leather that is accented with aquamarine and an old stock sliced agate with a quartz point in silver. This one-of-a-kind beautiful vessel is hand built with local wild clay dug and processed by me and fired with a traditional pit firing method that I learned from @Kayenta_Fire and @Process.ceramics in Austin, Texas. The clay that makes up the main body of the vessel is mixed with water, strained multiple times and set out to dry over a period of about a week. It is then hand-crushed in a mortar and pestle. The resulting fine powder is then mixed with different grogs in various ratios and then hand-built into unique forms. This laborious process is worth-while as it produces unique surfaces that are full of variation and depth. Indoor use only.
