About a year ago John and I spent the better part of a week working on another of my crazy craft ideas... which we never quite got to work. (This happens pretty often, which is why I don't like posting works-in-progress!) I really loved the project, though, so I kept our failed prototypes and vowed to SOMEDAY find a solution. Silly as this may sound, one of our main hangups was finding or making the perfect faux candy sprinkles. The few options I found online were either too labor-intensive, imperfect, or both. Real sprinkles can bleed their colors when wet, and are brittle and prone to crumbling. Not to mention the sugar content, which could attract critters if left unsealed. Fake sprinkles, however, can be used in all kinds of fun endeavors, from jewelry to faux cupcake ornaments to be-sprinkling your cellphone case. They're flexible but still hard, so they won't crumble, and you can make them any size you like (for larger props) and any color you want. So last night, John and I made these: It turns out that making fake sprinkles is dead simple, but I had to learn a few tricks the hard way. So get ready to learn from my mistakes! You Will Need: - Sculpey or Fimo clay (we used some of both to get the colors we wanted) - A clay or fondant extruder, like this: - With an inset disc with lots of tiny holes, like this: (If you want larger sprinkles, go with larger holes.) There are cheaper versions, too; just check the cake decorating section for something like this: In fact, this one with all the tips is only $10 over at Amazon. And that's got at least 3 different sprinkle sizes, right there! - A razor blade, preferably in a holder (you can find razor blade scrapers in any hardware store) - A cookie sheet & parchment paper **** Ok, like I said, dead simple: first, squeeze your clay out in a long rope from the extruder: We found Sculpey was easier to squeeze out than Fimo, but both still work fine. Work in small batches, so your clay strands aren't any longer than your baking sheet. Arrange the individual strands on parchment paper on the baking sheet: Try not to have any touching, since they'll stick together. Bake at 270 for approximately 8 to 9 minutes. (Too much longer, and you risk burning the clay.) The clay will still be a bit floppy when it comes out, but it will harden more as it cools. It will never get rock-hard, though, so don't worry if it's still flexible. Gather your strands into bunches of 10 or so, and chop 'em up with a razor blade: You may choose to sing "Choppin' Broccoli" at this point. That's up to you. Note: If your clay is crumbly when you go to cut it, that means you either haven't baked it long enough or hot enough. (I accidentally set the oven at the wrong temp one time. Ooops.) Now, you may be wondering: why chop with a razor, not scissors or a knife? Here's why: Not the best pics, but see how the pink strands on the left have bright white tips on the cut ends? Both scissors *and* sharp knives left that white discoloration, and trust me when I say it looks terrible on the finished sprinkles. A razor blade, however, cuts cleanly with no white edges, as you can see on the red strands on the right. Make sure you chop your sprinkles in a variety of sizes, and include lots of tiny pieces. Anything too perfect and uniform will scream "fake!" I decided to keep my colors separate, so I can mix the sprinkles in small batches as needed. I'm storing them in this nifty $4 container John found at JoAnn's: Now, a word about colors: Most of the clays - both Sculpey & Fimo - baked up a little darker, so you might want to err just slightly on the lighter side. The Sculpey blue, however, threw us for a loop: Believe it or not, the container on the far right is what you get from that blue clay after baking. SO DARK. We had to mix in some white to get the other two, lighter shades. We also had to add white to the purple, pink, and yellow, all of which were much too dark for bright happy sprinkles. The green, red, and orange are straight out of the pack, though. (Green & orange are Sculpey, red is Fimo.) You'll have to do some experimenting with your colors, since not only do they look different after baking, they can also look very different after chopping them into sprinkles! I highly recommend googling "rainbow sprinkles" for a good color reference. I printed out my favorite, and then we did our best to color match it. In fact, here's the image I used, so you can see how well we did: Our yellow is more pale, and our pink isn't quite as fluorescent, but otherwise I think we did ok! I hope this sparks some crafty ideas out there! And cross your fingers for me as I keep trying on the Failed Project; now that I have the sprinkles, I'm that much closer to success! Just have to experiment with some more different clear coats, and then maaaaybe I'll have something sweet to show you guys. And now one for you pinners: Btw, thanks for pinning my stuff, guys. My Grade 7-9 elective class recently finished these incredible faux food sculptures- made only out of toilet paper and water! I first saw this project posted on a Facebook art teachers group I belong to. I found a video tutorial (whom I think is the originator of the project?) HERE. She has an incredible Youtube channel. It's posted by the incredible art teacher Bethany Thiele. Her website is HERE. I have done fake food projects before- specifically Gyodan: Japanese Fake Food using polymer clay that was painted with acrylics. You can see that post HERE. So I bought two packs (24 rolls each I think) of toilet paper- whatever brand was on sale. I have about 55 students (not in one class, lol, in three classes) It was just enough. I gave each student a styrofoam plate to work on and store their food on. They wrote their name and class on the bottom of the plate. I showed them the video tutorial and let them get to work. They had to search up a photo of their chosen food and work from that reference photo. They figured out the technique needed for their food fast. I see each class once a week for a double period, so they sculpted one week, they dried for a week and then most needed to add more layers and sculpt more for another double period. After two weeks they were ready to paint. Watercolors produce the most realistic looking food. Again, I reminded them to use their reference photo because we wanted these to look REAL! They can only paint up to a certain point as the sculptures really suck up all the paint and can get soggy. So students needed to paint in careful layers. Here's my gyro wrap I had for lunch one day- which is real and which is fake?? 😂 These all came out incredibly well- I displayed them in our Senior cafe so the elementary classes and staff could come through and have a look at them. I love how many of them chose food from their own culture, or meals that their parents make at home. Baklava Turkish meatballs (vegan) Opa wrap eggs & sausage slightly overbakes croissant souvlaki & pita assortment of Chinese food beets sashimi & sushi waffles gnocci strawberry cake pretzel with chocolate drizzle sausage & eggs S'mores! I don't have a kiln and to be honest, I'm not sure if it's ever in the future for me, sadly. However, this year I was able to purchase some Crayola Air Dry Clay, and the reason I like this so much is because you can use marker, watercolors, or tempera to color them. It's easy! Its mess-free! It's what we got, so we make it work. We talked about different types of food, and the students only got a small little piece of clay. If they wanted something big, it had to be hallowed out and stuffed with a paper towel. It worked. They look great. They had to name their food as if it were on a menu and we'll display them with little cards saying that. Here is a quick shot of them :) OH! And, And, AND!! I got a new Canon Rebel this weekend, so soon, my pictures will be much better.

Hey there! I hope y'all are doing well. I once read that broken cookies have no calories. Well, I have an absolute calories free cookie for you today! As the autumn breeze starts to whisper through the air (remember, just not in Texas right now), the season of pumpkins and cozy gatherings is just around the corner. If you're looking to add a touch of seasonal charm to your decor, why not try your hand at crafting faux pumpkin cookies out of polymer clay? This delightful DIY project allows you to create everlasting pumpkin-themed goodies that can be cherished year after year. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the step-by-step process of making these adorable and lifelike faux pumpkin cookies using polymer clay. If you're not crafty and want to purchase these cookies, check out my Etsy Shop! Materials You'll Need Polymer clay, I used air dry but will be trying the baked version soon. Rolling Pin Waxed or Parchment Paper Knife or clay cutting tools Craft Paints Paint brushes Antique Glaze Toothpick Cookie Cutters - I have this one and the larger one is vintage and no longer available. Baking sheet and oven (for the clay that needs to be baked). Gloss glaze (optional, for a shiny finish). FUN FACT: I used to collect cookie cutters when my boys were small, so I dug into my stash and found the cutter on the right hand side. It's marked .69 cents. You can not find them that cheap any longer, unless you thrift one. Actually, they are no longer available in stores. Shape the Pumpkin Body: Condition the clay by kneading it until it's soft and pliable. I just stored mine in the garage where it stays warm constantly, day and night. Roll it into a ball and then flatten it slightly to form the base of your pumpkin cookie. You can use your fingers or a rolling pin roller for this step. I placed my clay between two pieces of parchment paper and rolled it out with a rolling pin. Create the Pumpkin Cookie: After you roll out your clay to about a 1/4" thick, cut out your cookie shapes. I used my large cutter to cut out the pumpkin shape and then the smaller cutter with the plunger to make the face and other lines. Add Textures: For a realistic touch, I used this cutter from Michaels, it was a perfect face and details. Of course, you can also use a knife and cut out your own face and create your own lines, which is what I did on my trial run before the fancy cutters. Form the Layers: You will need one layer with a face (top) and one layer plain (bottom). In essence you need two cut outs for each cookie. Create the Face: Take a knife and carefully cut out the eyes, nose and mouth. Smooth rough edges with your fingertips. Add Layers Together: For a realistic looking cookie, you want it to be thick, so adding the cutout layer to the plain layer will create the illusion of a real cookie. Use your fingertips to smooth out the seams. Form the Details: After you have the seams smoothed out and looking the way you want it, you can use a toothpick or needle tool to make the small lines around the edges, this also helps to seal the two layers and adds to the realism. Bake or Air Dry the Clay: Air Dry for 2-3 days. If you use the baking clay, preheat your oven according to the instructions on your polymer clay package. Place your pumpkin cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them according to the recommended temperature and time. Be cautious not to overbake, as it may cause the clay to darken. NOTE: My air dry cookies take 3 days inside the air conditioning to dry, I'm currently trying a batch in the hot garage to see how long that takes them out there. Choose Your Paints: These are the paints I chose to create my baked cookie look. I used Orange for the eyes, nose and mouth. I mixed the Lite Mocha and Golden Sunset to achieve the cookie color and then finished everything up with the Waverly Wax in Antique to arrive at the baked look. Painting the Cookies: You will need to experiment and practice to arrive at the finished look. It's a process. Mix your paints until you like the look, but remember the antique wax will darken the end results. Adding the Wax: For a realistic look, I added the wax in small amounts around the edges making sure to get it down in the crevasses. Using a flat paint brush, gently press the wax into the all the fine lines around the pumpkins. The edges will be darker than the center. Finishing Touches: Using a damp cloth, buff out the remaining wax to achieve the just right baked look you want. I felt like the eyes, nose and mouth were a bit too bright, so I toned them down with a dry brush method using the antique wax. Perfection! Crafting faux pumpkin cookies out of polymer clay is a wonderful way to embrace the beauty of autumn and infuse a touch of creativity into your decor or accessories. With just a few simple materials and a little patience, you can create lifelike pumpkin cookies that will last for years to come. Whether you're an experienced clay artist or a beginner looking for a fun project, this DIY endeavor is sure to bring joy and a sense of accomplishment.
