I have a confession: It may be summer but I’m not the best at switching off and relaxing. In my defense, I know I’m not the only one. I firmly believe it’s the way we teachers are wired. We’re passionate about our jobs. We care about our students. Sometimes to our own detriment… That’s why, when I ended up in hospital with a giant kidney stone just one week before final exams and report deadlines, I knew I needed to approach this summer vacation differently. Hospitals aren’t exactly the cheeriest of places but I lucked out; I had the presidential suite of hospital rooms. As I stared out at the cotton candy sunset sprinkling rose gold favors over the city skyline, I experienced a sense of clarity and wonder that until then I’d been too busy to even realize I was missing. (I’m almost certain it had nothing to do with the morphine.) Now that I’m home, instead of rushing straight into lesson planning for September, I’m planning to spend my days refreshing my mind and recharging my soul. Or at least refreshing my G&T and recharging my kindle. Vacation vs Vocation (see what I did there?) You shouldn’t be thinking about marking or report writing or lesson plans… but I have a sneaking suspicion, if you are anything like me, you will anyway. So how about you give your practical brain a holiday and let your creative brain run wild instead? (To reaffirm, I teach English. Not Science. I may not know how brains actually work.) We humans learn best when we engage all our senses. That’s why I always put so much thought into my classroom environment. And because I’ve already spent so much time on this topic, you don’t have to! So, here are my FIVE free tips for easily generating a creative and engaging classroom environment... 1. Turn your classroom into a gallery Make a feature of your students’ own work. This tip is a triple whammy. You don’t have to dredge up any of your own creativity. You already possess everything you need. Best of all, your kids will feel a sense of pride at having their efforts displayed. 2. Press play to set the right tone The way you set the scene for learning in your classroom might be overt, it might be covert. A sneaky tool to counteract any less-than-positive mindsets your students bring into the classroom is music. You can theme your soundtrack to your lesson or simply to the mood you choose to create. 3. Get the conversation started There’s nothing worse than a closemouthed classroom. Coaxing responses from quiet or disinterested kids can sometime feel like pulling teeth. Bypass the awkward silence every day by writing a new question or quote at the top of your board. The more provocative or challenging it is, the more debate and discussion it’s bound to prompt. 4. Build a ‘Wonder-Wall’ If thinking of a new question every day feels a bit daunting, turn the tables and get your kids to do it instead! Get them involved; give them a space on your bulletin board to pin their own thoughts. It can be questions about the content you’re studying, or just general teenage musings on life… 5. Bring your classroom to life OK, so filling your classroom with plants isn’t technically ‘free’ but the emotional, spiritual, and intellectual benefits are invaluable. And it really doesn’t have to cost the Earth — you can even grow your own from cuttings. Simply having plants in our workspace improves our concentration, memory, mood, and creativity. What better way to bring life to your classes?! Ladies and Gentleman... we officially have the first week down in the books!! And what an AMAZING week it was!! #BestFirstWeekEver!! My kiddos are just awesome. We learned a lot and laughed a lot! My own children also had a great week (aside from a quick bout of a stomach bug that kept one home for a day!). My oldest, Drew, started 1st grade. My middle, Quinn, started Kindergarten. And my toddler twins, Addy and Chase, began two-mornings-a-week preschool. Additionally, Mr. Musings from the Middle School (my husband Dennis), started a new school year, too! Phew!! My head is spinning! Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend and recovering from this busy time of year. This post is mainly a pictorial of some of the goings on in my classroom this week. As we settle into our routine, I'll be back with more "meaty" posts (and hopefully some new videos, too!). One of my favorite activities from the week was this Growth Mindset lesson that I adapted from here. Basically, the kids had to create the image on top using just a piece of paper and scissors. It was NOT easy... but that's exactly the point! As the kids worked, I wrote down some of the comments I heard. Things like, "this is impossible," and "I give up!" After I let them struggle for a while, I brought them back together and discussed the activity with them. It was eye-opening to see their words. They all agreed that their attitude was too negative so of course they would never have been successful. Then we read the Growth Mindset posters hanging in our room and discussed what each one meant. I closed with this video from Khan Academy. It was a fun and powerful lesson. One of the BEST purchases I made from TpT for this school year is the Icebreakers that Rock bundle from Cult of Pedagogy. This product contains three PowerPoint activities that allow students to talk to each other in an easy, comfortable way. What is great about these is that you can use them as one, big activity, or you can break them up, showing just a few slides here and there, as "brain breaks" through out the day. That is how I used them. So, on the first day, I did a big "Find Someone Who" activity with them. This allowed all the kids to learn each other's names. Next, I assigned them all their lockers and we practiced opening the combination locks (super-stressful for these first time locker users)! After that, we did a few slides from Icebreakers that Rock. Then, we went over the syllabus. Next, a few more Icebreakers that Rock slides. After that, I handed out and went over all the paperwork that had to go home and be signed (oh, the paperwork!!!). Then, a few more slides right before lunch. And then a few more right after lunch. Next up, a tour of the building. Then a few more slides before trying our lockers again. Finally, another slide right before dismissal. It was the perfect break/filler/attention-getter/distraction to use throughout the day... actually, I used the slides throughout the whole week! Run to TpT and pick this product up today! Totally worth every penny. (Some of the slides can be done silently. I LOVED these slides!!) Of course, we had to number our notebooks to get ready for ELA next week. I always tell kids that this is the easiest, most difficult task that we do all year :) I really the love smell of a Mr. Sketch anchor poster in the morning! This year, I'm starting with Reading Nonfiction: Notice and Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies. My thinking is that it will really help with getting started with Article of the Week. Here is one of several of the posters I'll be using to teach these strategies. I'm jumping on the #ObserveMe bandwagon! Read more about it here. For the most part in my class we use community supplies. Of course I get those sad faces and every once in a while an upset parent but once I explain my reasoning everything is usually all good! Why is the basket empty on the first day? The basket is empty because how the concept is taught the first few days of school can determine successful utilization of classroom supplies. Some say community supplies does not teach students to take care of their own things, but I disagree. My students are responsible for keeping their group supplies organized, in good shape, and well kept. I teach my students WITH A LOT OF DETAIL about how to take care of and use each supply. I teach each supply one at a time! I created the posters below and keep them up in the classroom. My students chant these little rhymes all year long! I use the following rhymes: Tip Up Before You Cup! Let the Ink Sink! Hear the Click Before You Stick! A Big Space is a Waste! Scissors Down Safe and Sound! When You’re Through Close the Glue! A Dot Does A Lot! A Line is Fine! Put On the Top When You Stop! Here is what my supply baskets look like. Each item has a particle place and the students work hard to keep them clean.
