Create a magical dragon from one paper plate. Inspired by the brand new series, Dragons: Race to the Edge, by the creators of "How to Train Your Dragon," due to be released on Netflix soon, the kids and I created our very own dragon puppets! Using a single paper plate as the base, decorate your dragon with paper collage, paint, fabric scraps or whatever takes your fancy. Materials for basic dragon: Paper plate Scissors Pen Stapler/tape Materials for decorating (optional): Paint Fabric/paper scraps Googly-eyes Craft stick (for a puppet handle) Step 1: Cut your paper plate as shown above. First cut it in half. Cut one half in half again (to make 2 quarters) and then cut one of the quarters in half again (to make 2 eighths). Step 2: Cut the rim of the plate off the quarter plate piece. Step 3: Cut little triangles off the plate rim piece to make the tail and draw a dragon head on the remaining piece. Step 4: Cut out your dragon head and give some shape to the two other small plate pieces (the eighths) for the wings. Your dragon is now ready to decorate and ensemble. Step 5: (optional) Decorate! We decorated our dragons with my favourite fluro tempera paint disks and some metallic easy wash paint. Step 6: When dry and ready, staple (or stick) the pieces of your dragon together. For finishing touches you can go over the dragon's face with a black marker and add googly-eyes. (Everything is adorable with googly-eyes). We also added craft sticks to the bottom to turn ours into puppets. Now you're ready to play! Crafts can be a great extension of an activity to encourage interest and understanding in a topic whilst allowing for creativity and other practical motor skills. We use things like puppets for role-play and find they are wonderful for working on language and other speech skills. When finished watching a film in class it can be helpful for the class to spend a little more time thinking about the film in a historical context and how it relates to what is already being learned within the classroom. I have the following 5 worksheet options. 1. Film Review 2. Historical Inaccuracies: (Identify three historical inaccuracies from the film and make corrections. Explain why you think the inaccuracy was in the film) 3. Hard Decisions: (Identify two problems from the film, and provide two possible solutions for each problem. Explain the pros and cons of the possible solutions) 4. Change the Movie Ending: (Create a new movie ending) 5. Interview a Character: (Select a character from the film and create 5 questions with 5 possible answers) Select the worksheet you think would be best for your students based on the film, or allow students to select one of the worksheets to complete at the end of the film.

Encanto is such an amazing film with so many underlying themes that can be tied to so many curriculum links! From family roles, responsibilities and expectations, to Social Emotional Learning and of course, the beautiful music found in this film makes it perfect for an in-depth and educational exploration! This is a fun and engaging work packet that ties to multiple curriculum links in the Ontario Curriculum. You can choose to either watch the movie in its entirety with your class or you can choose to watch the film in small chunks or clips. I have included a guide with which worksheet to use that corresponds to a time stamp in the film. I personally recommend watching the movie in its entirety to allow students to really absorb the emotions, familial and cultural ties that this movie has and then going through individual scenes as you complete this work packet, to refresh their memory and dive deep into discussion. It is great to go through this film and activity packet in the course of a few weeks. If you cannot spend an entire afternoon on the film, cut it up into 20 or 30 minute chunks and then revisit scenes as needed! Curriculum Links This work packet includes multiple curriculum ties to the Ontario Curriculum. Although these are taken from specific grades, they can be applied to various grades as well as various provinces! Music: (Grade 3) C2.1 express personal responses to musical performances in a variety of ways C2.2 describe ways in which the elements of music are used in the music they listen to. Social Studies: (Grade 1) A1.describe some of the ways in which people’s roles, relationships, and responsibilities relate to who they are and what their situation is, and how and why changes in circumstances might affect people’s roles, relationships, and responsibilities as well as their sense of self A2. use the social studies inquiry process to investigate some aspects of the interrelationship between their identity/sense of self, their different roles, relationships, and responsibilities, and various situations in their daily lives A3. demonstrate an understanding that they and other people have different roles, relationships, and responsibilities, and that all people should be treated with respect, regardless of their roles, relationships, and responsibilities Social Emotional Literacy (Grade 1) A1.1 apply skills that help them identify and manage emotions as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to improve their ability to express their own feelings and understand and respond to the feelings of others A1.2 apply skills that help them to recognize sources of stress and to cope with challenges, including help-seeking behaviours, as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to support the development of personal resilience A1.3 apply skills that help them develop habits of mind that support positive motivation and perseverance as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to promote a sense of optimism and hope My students LOVED doing these activities over the course of a few weeks!
